Anti-PAD group builds stage at Sanam Luang

(BangkokPost.com) – Anti-People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) set its main stage on Sanam Luang on Saturday as a venue to express their disagreement with the PAD.

About 200 members of Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD) wearing red shirts built the stage on the venue to prepare to show their opposition against the anti-government group.

Interested people walking pass by sign their names in support of the group

18.05 PAD in Phuket insists they would stop protests only if the Prime Minister resigns, while the Phuket International Airport is still closed with no clear re-opening time

A representative from the PAD Uthai Suksirisamphan insisted that if the Prime Minister, Samak Sundaravej, resigns after seeking an audience with HM the King this evening, they then would dissolve from the airport. This follows the meeting between Phuket Vice Governor Worapote Ratasrima, Provincial police, Mr. Uthai and representatives of 9 airlines this afternoon. The Phuket Vice Governor re-affirmed that the authority has no policy to deal violently with the protestors. Mr. Uthai said if the Prime Minister resigns the protestors will open their blockade of the airport and if the airport flights are still being blocked it would be not from their action.
The airline representatives requested that the airport only re-open when 100% safety is assured and that the airport should not announce developments every 6 hours as it would cause confusion to foreign airliners.
The airport re-opening is therefore not scheduled yet, despite the original plan of 6 pm today as protesters are still rallying in front of the airport. The number of protesters also increased in the late afternoon.
-------------

The Phuket Tourist Association and Thai Hotel Association Southern Chapter in Phuket have sent messages requesting their hotel members take care of out-going guests who got delayed by the protest, by giving special room rates with light meals. The PTA can be contacted at 076 – 222177. The Phuket Airport contact number for tourists is 076 351144

18.35 Tourism sector in Phuket plead for the PAD to allow flights to resume as the suspension has severely damaged tourism and economy

Phuket Tourist Association (PTA) and Thai Hotel Association (THA) Southern Chapter at 5pm this afternoon held a press conference pleading with the protestors to allow flights to resume at Phuket International Airport as the suspension has already severely damaged the tourism and economy. In the statement, Mr. Metee Tanmanatrakul, President of THA Southern Chapter, estimated the loss of around 250 million baht per day. He said Thai people as host country should allow foreign tourists to return home safety after visiting the Andaman region. He emphasized that the impact of the protest not only has immediate impacts, but will be felt in the next 4 – 5 years while tourism is the ‘big pot of rice’ for people in this region. The PTA and the THA Southern Chapter insist that they do not make any conclusion which side is right or wrong, but sees that foreign tourists should not be affected or responsible for the internal conflict.

18.50: PAD members still gather peacefully at Krabi International Airport
At 6 pm today the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) still make a peaceful rally in front of the terminal of Krabi International Airport while it is still closed for all flights with no time scheduled to re-open. No protesters are in the runway area as no flights are allowed in or out. Krabi Governor Siwa Sirisaowalak ordered police officers to station there, but with no confrontation or violence. If the rain does not come this evening, the numbers of protesters are expected to increase.

What i'd like to know is how the hell do they manage to build all these rally stages so quickly. I mean. it usually takes them a month to fix a hole in the street? Oh forget it, I forgot, public works is union 5555. No offense to anybody. I'm union too. I get paid by the hour.

"DAAD counter-rally sets up its own shop
By The Sunday Nation
Published on August 31, 2008

A pro-government rally was staged yesterday afternoon at Sanam Luang urging people to oppose the overthrow of the Samak Sundaravej government through "anarchist means" by the People's Alliance for Democracy.

The group's leaders vow to oppose any new administration installed by the PAD if the current administration is ousted by street rallies. The rally was attended by thousands wearing red, but the crowd grew by the evening.

Deputy government spokesman Nattawut Sai-gua said the group would hit a gong to call for a mass rally instead of blowing a whistle as the PAD did.

"The PAD shouldn't think that its whistles alone are capable of staging a mass rally. We will beat a gong to announce our democratic move. We won't hand over our country to the PAD. If the government falls due to anarchist activities by the PAD and is replaced by a new regime supported by the PAD, then we shall consider it a nominee of the PAD and will call for an even bigger protest to oppose it," he said.

Nattawut is a former leader of the pro-Thaksin, anti-coup Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD). He said DAAD had yet to discuss whether to fully revive the movement.

A group calling itself "Taxi for Democracy" set up a stage nearby to denounce PAD actions. The group is also gathering signatures in support of Samak and will have them handed to the embattled premier amid speculation over whether he will resign.

The group said it could not remain idle any longer when the PAD had done such damage to the country."

quote from Bloomberg is representative of PAD views:

"We want violence,'' said Pinyapat Jariyasettakarn, a 45- year-old teacher who has joined the protests all week. ``We are tired and we know violence will end things. Win or lose, it's OK; at least it will be over.''

Worst case doesnt bear thinking about..

1992 they shot 100's.. 70's they shot 100's a few times.. Martial law, class war, Burma type military government..

I wouldnt for a second think theres a high chance of these, but the reasons everyones so worried about bloodshed is the country really is divided, this HAS to end peacefully.

DAAD gathers in front of parliament

(BangkokPost.com) - Over a thousand supporters of the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD), a pro-government group, have blockaded U-thong Nai road to gather in front of the parliament building on Sunday morning.

Their aim of the demonstration is to voice their support to the People Power party-led coalition government and their opposition to the movements of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD).

Many hundreds of police officers have been dispatched to maintain order around the parliament building. People working at the parliament with clearance cards are allowed to enter and exit the building only.

In the meantime, more people are travelling to U-thong Nai road to join the rally staged by the DAAD. The gathering is expected to continue to Sunday evening.

16.50 Phuket International Airport’s flights finally restarted after it was shut down for 2 days due to PAD protests

The Thai Airways International Flight TG 213 touched down at Phuket International Airport at 15.47 today bringing relief for officials and local tourism sectors, but more importantly tourists & passengers who got delayed by the protest which started since Friday afternoon. It was approximately 47 hours before the flights were allowed to take off and land at the airport after the facility was forced to shut down since 16.45 on Friday August 29th August. The flight carried about 330 passengers, including Phuket Governor Niran Galanamitr.

17.01 The PAD has announced that they stopped their protest at Phuket airport at 3.30pm. After the statement they helped open the gate of the airport. The statement however insisted that their members would return if the government applied violence. The members will travel to Bangkok to support others in pressurizing the Prime Minister to resign.
A Phuket International Airport press release reported that since the closure of 29 August, until 11am today 31 August, a total of 181 flights from 11 airlines and about 30,000 passengers had been delayed. Among these, 13,000 were out-going, with 17,000 in-coming. Around 137 tonnes of cargo goods could not be transported. Thai Airways International was most affected as it had 21 flights per day. The Phuket Tourist Association president Somboon Chirayus estimated the damage caused approx. 250 million baht per day with ongoing effects, as safety is a sensitive issue for travelers.

Anyone else ever think it is odd that protesters seem to never have to go to work? Same same here in America where many of the protesters are "trust fund babies" or living off their parents money apparently.

On a less frivilous note it would appear through a variety of open sources that Samak may try and get the budget through next week and then call a snap election (so more bar closures). The problem is PAD have said they won't recognise the result if an election was held- an interesting statement if they won, which they won't. Just shows that they are a bunch of troublemakers who are not interested in the democratic process. It would be interesting to see how much the people who are occupying GH are being paid every day to stay there. B500 to sit on one's ****- I'd do it if I had a Work Permit!!

CNBC just had a Democrat party member on the show, his name just flashed up but I think it was Korn Chatkavanij.. He was intelligent, articulate, seemed to care passionately about the importance of a clean democratic process, had multiple suggestions for possible solutions, one involving Samak stepping out and another leading to a complete dissolution. Also, and this may sound strange, he had the look of intelligence and integrity. I am a believer you really can read and judge people on superficial perception and I only have to look at Samak to see a greedy, belligerent beady eyed untrustworthy person.

When you listen to or look at Abhisit, and the impression I just got from this Democrat guy.. I am baffled by how this party doesnt sweep to power given the other offerings ?? What have the democrats done so wrong ???

I am talking to the air here, but "democracy" only works WELL when the wealth distribution of the population at hand ensures that people will vote for the benefit of their country and not just themselves.... but not have their vote purchased...

Thailand does NOT have that situation, so "democracy" is a limited joke to me.... Democracy in Saudi ? Democracy in Iraq then...

It all just make me giggle...

Excellent post. This even happens in 1st world countries. On the east coast of Canada I've talked to people who voted for a certain party because they have promised to create jobs in an economically depressed area. It isn't limited to so called 3rd world countries.

Sorry but agreeing to stimulate the local economy, as part of a campaign platform, isnt quite the same as saying heres some money vote for me !!

I must disagree. If you are poor and need a job you will vote for someone who promises you a job. So you are not voting for the best party you are thinking of yourself. There's really no difference than taking cash for a vote.

The only difference between "pork barrel" politics and "payola" politics, is that in "payola" (Thai style), you get your money up front.
