A strange looking fish surprised local villagers in Phuket.

This peculiar looking fish - a mix between a fresh water cat fish and an alligator or crocodile – was caught by a Nareuphol Sa-Nguannam in the Chalong area. The fish is one metre long and weighs around 20 kilograms. Nareuphol caught the fish while fishing in a local pond with his fishing rod. He said he was surprised to see that the fish looks like cat fish and alligator and notified the fisheries office to pick it up as he is concerned about the fish’s safety if it stays in the pond.

You can go to Underwater World in Siam, in Bangkok, or to the Aquarium in Pattaya, and see these.
    They have some there.
    Some big specimens too!

Looks like they are catching the dink gar in Thailand. Texas has some good size gar..

In Fisherman had caught some huge gar also, but I can't find the link now. Def hundreds of pounds in weight though.

    Everything is big in Texas!?
They can keep them there, I do not want to swim amongst fish like that!
They caught a pike some years ago, just over the border in Sweden, it was 46 some kilos, over 60 cm's around the waist!
Same , same, keep them away from my favorite swimming places!

Not sure if this is the one you meant, but it's certainly impressive.

BTW does anyone else think that alligator fish looks a little small for 20 kg/44 pounds?

The "Alligator Gar" is not a native of Thailand, but comes from Southern USA.
It's pretty common in the aquarium trade though, but as it soon outgrows most home aquariums people release them into their local ponds!
If they can find a mate and spawn, they can run havoc on local fish species, and make them endangered or in the extreme even extinct!
There are cases opposite to this one where South-East Asian "Snake-Heads", has been released in southern US waters and multiplied, creating lot a of problems for fish and people!

    We still in Thailand here?

The one they caught here is probably a pair of shoes and a couple of handbags in the shop at the back of Jungceylon by now.
