An idea to get the tourists back to Phuket

"A topless pub in north Queensland has been given a $500,000 federal grant to help it attract tourists. Opposition regional development spokesman Kelvin Thomson said Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson approved the grant despite knowing that it breached program guidelines because the Atherton Hotel was in direct competition with a number of other hotels and clubs in the district. And Mr Thomson said the grant appeared to have been used to create space to open up a gaming venue with 21 poker machines. The pub, known locally as "The Stump", received the grant in November 2003 to help it build a conference centre. Within months, the hotel - famed for its topless barmaids and performances by the "Stump Bikini Babes" - had applied for 21 poker machine licences, to be housed in the old breakfast room and general meals room".

I agree, prices that generally rival pattaya and bangkok would have people turn up in their droves

How about a free BG with every room booked by a single male tourist.

Now that would be a great all-inclusive plan.

I am surprised that Thai Airways and some of the other airlines that go from the US to Bangkok and Phuket have not had any specials. A lot of national airlines are subsidised by their governments but maybe they just had too big a hit with the tsunami to be able to subsidise any flight costs to promote tourism.

Cathay Pacific is running a special for Manila but nothing for Thailand so far.

When Fiji had a coup a few years ago, Air Pacific was running a special $599 + Tax fare that was about to end. After the coup was over, they did not extend the fare and the next year when they needed to entice people to go there, they did not have a low fare sale and even raised their retail and wholesale prices for that year. Go figure.

Also, the fuel surcharges that the airlines are hitting consumers with are not helping. Continental added $50 to flights for Micronesia and Manila and all airlines to Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia have added at least $50 per person in taxes.

Cheaper prices

Normally, the laws of supply and demand will work wonders. Still, Phuket had thousands of tourists before the Tsunami and the high prices didn't stop them. I think they just need to get the message out that Phuket has recovered and that things are back to normal.

Tuk Tuk Grand Prix

We should organize a grand prix or crash car derby with Tuk Tuks. Souped up Tuks Tuks crashing into walls and each other would be great publicity and also make me feel better seeing them crash and race. Bars could put thier logo on a car and sponsor it.

Nicke had an idea for a BM card which I think because of a small diaster last boxing day hasnt yet got off the ground yet(sure it will in future).
I have found at MTB and LOVE BAR the owners often ring the bell which I suppose is like a discounted drink.
IMHO I dont think cheap drink prices will be the difference for me not or going to phuket,as for bar fine 200 baht is like 2 beers back home nothing !

200 Baht for one pint of semi reasonable beer here tonight - just wasted 1600 baht in a North Wales town. IN patong - 1600 baht = luxury for a few hours

The VIP cards will be implemented in the near future, on hold for various reasons including the one mentioned above.
