Phuket to host new international style of rugby tournament

<p> Phuket and Thailand is getting a world first in testing out a new international competition in rugby. Called 80-80 rugby or welterweight rugby, it is full 15 a side contact rugby played under the existing International Rugby Board Laws of the Game. The only difference is that it is weight graded and all players cannot weigh more than 85 kg.
Patrick Cotter of Phuket Vagabonds Club told Andaman News that Phuket will host the world's first international tournament in the week of 6 - 14 August. Auckland Rugby Union, New South Wales Union and Japan Rugby Football Union will compete with Thailand. These Unions represent the “powerhouses” of Southern hemisphere rugby and Japan is the leading rugby nation in Asia, being the only one to have made a World Cup. It should prove to be one of the most competitive and closely fought rugby competitions between Asian Unions and Southern hemisphere unions ever. Filming of the event will be seen world wide on the IRB\'s weekly “Total Rugby” TV program.

(PS Andaman News is NOT on air on Thursday 21 July)

Bad news about Pele but good news for boxing fans

from http://www.thaisnews.com/news_detail.php?newsid=137509 &
Andaman News TV11 & FM90.5 Phuket 8.30am Thursday 28 July 2005

A team of World Cup all-stars led by Pele has indefinitely postponed their tsunami charity tour this week to Thailand, including Phuket, as the Brazilian football legend has to tend to family matters. Several ex football stars like France’s Eric Cantona, Argentina’s Claudio Caniggia and Germany’s Rudi Voller of Germany had been due in Bangkok and Phuket to help raise money for tsunami victims and promote the country’s tourism industry. The teams were due to tour tsunami disaster zones along the Andaman coast and possibly play beach football here. The match and tour have been indefinitely postponed but will be rescheduled when Pele is available.

Meanwhile, a big boxing match for a WBO world bantamweight title defence, by Ratanachai Sor Vorapin of Thailand against challenger Mauricio Martinez of Panama, will go ahead in Patong near or on the football ground, on Friday August the 5th, probably late afternoon or evening. There will be 2 other junior boxing matches as well at the same event.
