Patong is being evacuated at the moment, nothing was felt here. I'm not too worried about this one, theres no way you'll get out of Patong at the moment

Just taken the car to the in laws, they are all leaving as is a very high percentage of people, the police are actually controlling the evacuation quite effectivley.
Traffic is slow moving on the hill but for how long remains to be seen.
The eta of waves (if any ) is 1.30 am. (thai tv , translated by the wife )

This earthqauke was about 50x lighter than the one of 26th, and lighter then the riskvalue for tsunami. Thai's should be aware that being overcausious might hurt there position.
The largest aftershock off the dec 26th quake was 8.7 epicentred off the Sumatran island of Nias. An earthquake of magnitude 8.7 was reported shortly at 16:09:37 UTC (23:09:37 local time) on March 28, 2005 approximately at the same location (see 2005 Sumatran earthquake). It is likely a very large aftershock of the original earthquake. This earthquake had strong aftershocks of its own, including magnitude 6.0 and 6.1 quakes. At 8.7, it ranks as the 7th largest earthquake since 1900 and it still did not result in a Tsunami.
But they probably going to respond like this to every quake for a while

7.3 is very small compared to 26 Dec and I dont worry, but police ordered us to close and evacuate, so I stay home now.
They have to evacuate to be on the safe side, IF something was going to happen and better be safe than sorry, a lesson we learned on 26 Dec. We had hundreds of 6-7 on the richter scale since the last tsunami but this one is located more north than the previous ones, if I understood correctly.

We are on the 3rd floor of the bar with most of the staff. I would be more pissed off to be stuck half up the mountain.

Waveheight says nothing as tsunamiwaves are completely different from normal waves.
Let's hope the media keeps quiet about it or tourism gets another downer. Cautious ok, overcautious not

And could someone please explain why after all this time and 'warning systems' talk you still cant subscribe to an SMS alert on all of the major phone networks ???
So simple.. So effective...
As to the warnins its Bart Simpson paradox (damned if you do and damned if you dont).. Without a doubt this will have another effect on the starting to slightly recover local economy.. However of course warning must be made for such a close location and possibility..
A Tsunami can come not necessary due to the large strength of the quake but due to the movements of the sea floor.. It seems like we are now in a hot zone for siesmic activity.. Other countries live with this threat regularly.. Now we do..
Much more chance of getting hurt in the panic fleeing packed roads is my guess..

Magnitudes below 6.5
Earthquakes of this magnitude are very unlikely to trigger a tsunami.
Magnitudes between 6.5 and 7.5
Earthquakes of this size do not usually produce destructive tsunamis. However, small sea level changes may be observed in the vicinity of the epicenter. Tsunamis capable of producing damage or casualties are rare in this magnitude range but have occurred due to secondary effects such as landslides or submarine slumps.
Magnitudes between 7.6 and 7.8
Earthquakes of this size may produce destructive tsunamis especially near the epicenter; at greater distances small sea level changes may be observed. Tsunamis capable of producing damage at great distances are rare in the magnitude range.
Magnitude 7.9 and greater
Destructive local tsunamis are possible near the epicenter, and significant sea level changes and damage may occur in a broader region.
due to the distance and magnitude I would not worry to much. But CNN is out so bye bye tourists, bookings will go down again.

News Alerts on TV also works pretty well, the word spread fast all over patong, but ofcourse SMS alert to everyone in affected areas would be pretty effective and fast.
In Soi Eric, the girls left pretty fast while customers was calm and took it easy. When I drove back home it was no panic at all, and the traffic went on fine.

Well seems like no weave activity heading Nicobar way
Quote:
PORT BLAIR, India (Reuters) - India's Andaman and Nicobar islands are not in danger of a tsunami after an earthquake hit the area on Sunday, the island chain's top federal administrator said.
"We have got reports from all inhabited islands through the police and there has been no casualties or damage," federal top administrator Ram Kapse told Reuters. "There has been no tsunami alert."
The U.S. Geological Survey earlier said the quake measuring 7.0 struck at 1542 GMT. It said the danger of tsunamis had passed if no such waves had been observed near the epicentre within an hour. Kapse was talking over an hour after the quake.

This brings back memories of the days after the tsunami (about 29th) there was an aftershock mentioned and all bars closed, all girls packed their bags and the few customers still there were pissed that they didn't get the chance to finish their drinks
Damn I remember being pissed that night, believe it was the same night I got very very MAO on a bottle of Vodka that I had to drink pure with my new rusian friend. It was not my night

Thats what I was thinking, think if I was there and did intend to head out give the initial mob a good 15mins to peg it then move at a slower pace after them.

Cobbled together report on TV appears to have just called a rough 'all clear' with a warning to wait until 2 am to be safe...
I am off to bed..
