British Girl Murdered in Phuket

British woman murdered, boyfriend sought

Paul Talbot and Debra O'Hanlon in a photograph found at the murder scene and believed to have been taken about a month ago.

PATONG: A 31-year old British woman, Debra O’Hanlon, was found dead in the Eric Guesthouse on Nanai Rd around 2 pm yesterday.

Police say they are searching for a boyfriend, Briton Paul Chetwynd-Talbot, also 31 and also British, in connection with the Ms O’Hanlon’s death.

The two were apparently staying in the same room in the guesthouse and police told the Gazette that Talbot has not been seen since before Ms O’Hanlon’s body was found.

One witness claimed to have seen the couple entering their room late on Sunday night and Talbot leaving alone some time later.

Talbot and Ms O’Hanlon had owned the Red Or Dead bar in Patong, but are believed to have sold it after the December 26, 2004, tsunami wiped out the business financially.

Pol Lt Padungpong Duksukaew, Duty Officer of Kathu Police Station, told the Gazette that Ms O’Hanlon and Talbot flew back to England after the bar was sold. Talbot is thought to have returned to Phuket in May.

Lt Padungpong said that Ms O’Hanlon came to Thailand in the past few days to try to persuade Talbot to return to England.

Pol Col Teeraphol Thipjaroen, Superintendent of Kathu Police Station told the Gazette that an initial examination of the body suggested that Ms O’Hanlon had been struck hard in the face with a blunt object and that her neck was broken.

He also said that whoever caused her death may be injured; Blood was found at the scene, yet there were no cuts or lacerations on the victim’s body. Samples of blood collected from the apartment have been sent for analysis, he said.

Lt Padungpong said that friends and staff at the guesthouse became concerned about the couple because they had not turned up to farewell parties as expected on Sunday and Monday night.

Col Teeraphol and Lt Padungpong agreed that Talbot was suspected of killing Ms O’Hanlon because, they said, it was reported that the couple had been heard arguing loudly in the days before her death and because Talbot has not been seen since the body was discovered.

Col Teeraphol said that he was sure that Talbot was still in Thailand. “We have checked all the airlines and alerted the Immigration Department, but there is no record of him having left the country,” he explained.

Ms O’Hanlon’s body has been taken to Wachira Phuket Hospital for autopsy.

Drew- Where was the Red or Dead Bar- I seem to recall it was on Bangla next to Sruffy Murphy's?

The bar was in soi easy the 4th one down on the left side as you go in, they walked away from the bar and left it in the hands of the cashier who later closed it presumably when the rent was due.

They caught him last night..

Well 'caught' would be how the Thai police will say it.. He was found outside the Police station locally after having cut his wrists..

The blood at the scene is his.. They had him in Wachira Hospital overnight but are moving him to cells already.. Not much sympathy or recovery time.. Looks like a VERY bad situation for him..

Yeah, at elast this was a domestic incident. I think if it was a thai person who killed a british girl, there would be a lot more uproar from the press, and damage phukets reputation.

I read that she was hit in the face with a blunt object and broke her neck because if it..... must have been 1 hell of a hit!!

I reckon it was a basic punch.. Unlucky for all concerned..

Also your if it was a Thai depends entirely on 'which' Thai.. Justice for Alexandria last month being a prime example.. Kanchanaburi guy another..

O’Hanlon murder suspect surrenders

PATONG: Paul Chetwynd-Talbot, sought for the murder of his girlfriend, Debra O’Hanlon, who was found dead on Tuesday afternoon (see story here), turned himself in to the police last night.

Pol Col Teeraphol Tipjaroen, Superintendent of Kathu Police Station, told the Gazette that Talbot had come to the front of the police station at about 8pm last night and had sat there doing nothing until a police officer asked him if he needed something.

“The officer walked up to him and asked whether he wanted to report something to the police and he said, yes, he was the one who had killed Debra,” Col Teeraphol said.

“He said that he had tried to commit suicide by cutting his wrists after he killed Debra in the room [the couple were sharing in Nanai Rd].

“This explains why we found so much blo od at the scene of the murder. There were deep wounds in his wrists, the tendons were slashed and he had lost a lot of blood. He looked a wreck; no one could recognize him,” Col Teeraphol added.

Col Teeraphol said that Chetwynd-Talbot, when asked where he had been since the murder, told police that he had been sitting on the beach or walking aimlessly along the sand.

He was charged with murder and taken for treatment at Wachira Phuket Hospital. This morning he was transferred to Kathu Police Station.

The Times newspaper in Britain has reported that the accused man is a member of the family of the Earl of Shrewsbury, Charles Henry John Benedict Crofton Chetwynd Chetwynd-Talbot, and described him as the “black sheep of the family”.

Chetwynd-Talbot is, according to The Times report, not a blood relative of the Earl, but received the family name “through a female member o f the clan”.

His namesake, Paul Alexander Anthony Bueno Chetwynd-Talbot, told the newspaper, “He has been the bane of my life for years. Every time he runs up a debt, people come on to me about it.

“He is a thoroughly bad lot who has gone round causing a lot of trouble. I have never met this character,” he continued.

“I have had telephone calls from people on whom he has bounced checks, which is always extremely annoying.”

Friends of the couple, speaking to the Gazette yesterday before he surrendered, said that they believed Chetwynd-Talbot had debts in Phuket of around 100,000 baht.

Pol Maj Gen Suwit Othong, Phuket Provincial Police Commander, was quoted in The Times as saying that investigators believe that Chetwynd-Talbot had tried to cheat Ms O’Hanlon out of money.

However, a friend of the couple, speaking to the Gazette before the arrest said, “The idea that [the murder] was in any way for financial gain i s just out of the question.

“They would have shared whatever they had. Whatever she had, he could – in a pinch – have persuaded her to share with him, and vice versa.”
