Australian dies in Thailand drinking binge
The bodies of an Australian man and his American friend were found slumped together on the floor of a guest house bar in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai on Monday, police said.
An initial investigation found Charles Clayton Burgess, 39, from Box Hill in NSW, and Scott Ray Sturgess, 42, from San Diego, California, may have died from heart failure after drinking too much, police Lieutenant Colonel Boonlert Jantanoodej said.
The Nation newspaper said Burgess was the owner of the bar-guest house and Sturgess was a friend who was in Thailand as a tourist.
The two men had been drinking with friends in the ground floor bar of the guest house from midday on Sunday, Boonlert said.
They were last seen still drinking and shooting pool early on Monday.
The two men were found slumped on the floor near the pool table later this morning, Boonlert said.
A post-mortem exam found traces of narcotics in their blood but there was no physical sign on their bodies that they had used drugs, he said.
AdvertisementPolice said the cocktail of drugs and alcohol could have contributed to their deaths.
Chiang Mai is close to the Golden Triangle, the drug-producing region where the borders of Burma, Laos and Thailand meet.

Yeah I would agree with that, really like the "black deaths" they are very nice to drink, but the fishermans friends are not nearly as tasty.

Update on Oz Yahoo
Traces of heroin found on dead Aussie
Traces of heroin were found in the body of an Australian man who collapsed and died after a long drinking session in a Thai guesthouse bar in the northern city of Chiang Mai, police say.
Charles Clayton Burgess, 39, of Box Hill in New South Wales, was found dead on Monday beside American tourist Scott Ray Sturgess, 42, of San Diego, California.
The pair had been drinking heavily and police initially thought the pair had died from alcoholic poisoning.
But a police surgeon reported that heroin had been found in the nostrils and nasal tracts of the dead men.
Traces of the drug were also found on paper lying near the bodies at the Poombim beer bar and guesthouse owned by Burgess.
Burgess had been working in Chiang Mai as a trader, marketing souvenirs with his Thai wife. They were married in Thailand about a year ago.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Boonlert Jantanoodej said the two men had taken part in "a heavy drinking session" with other foreigners in the ground floor bar.
They are reported to have started drinking at lunchtime on Sunday and were last seen still imbibing together twelve hours later.
Early Monday a maid at the guesthouse found the men's bodies lying on the floor.
Chiang Mai is close to the Golden Triangle, the drug-producing region where the borders of Burma, Laos and Thailand meet, and the source of most of the heroin trafficked between the region and the rest of the world.

Some years ago a friend of mine named Ace was having quite a drinking bout. Every time he was getting too drunk, he just took more cocaine, and then was alert and ready to drink more. He couldn't seem to stop the cycle of another drinks, another couple lines. Because of this he could not get to sleep. So after a day of this, not having the discipline to stop himself, and with unlimited amounts of cocaine and alcohol at his disposal, he took some valiums because he really wanted to sleep.
It worked. Ace fell asleep. But he never woke up again.
Mixing alcochol and drugs can be very dangerous!!

Cocaine was invented then a bloke could drink for as long as he wanted to, IMHO. Sounds like these two may have taken something else by mistake?
