Full Moon Party to be axed?
Tourism business operators and residents on Surat Thani's Koh Phangan are opposing Interior Minister ACM Kongsak Wantana's plan to ban the island's infamous full moon party.
They are demanding a public hearing if the minister is determined to push ahead with the ban.
Koh Phangan Tourism Promotion Association chairman Chanchote Piriyasathit said the minister's idea to promote eco-tourism on Koh Phangan and discontinue the full moon party was ill-advised. Business operators and residents have hosted the party for more than 20 years and it has become known worldwide, he said, adding a ban would negatively affect tourism.
I can assure them that it would affect tourism, but is anybody listening? One am closing negatively affects tourism but those up there do not want to hear that, let alone believe it.

it brings way too many tourists. i think ultimately, they will cave in and keep it. i just dont understans thailand sometimes, (who does?) they bend over for those corrupt limo drivers at the airport, and tuk-tuk, but when it comes to the tourists best interest's, they could care less, which amazes me

The current regime in Bangkok doesnt give 2 hoots what people think or want. If they want something closed or stopped then thats what will happen. All that they accomplish is to push these types of events underground, which just make it more dangerous for those that partake.
When I told my wife about this, her response well, cannot be put onto a public forum.

Why do we have to wait for a full moon to have a party?

Plus the current regime does not get voters in Southern Thailand, so why should they care? On the contrary.

it's not about shagging BG'S at all if you wanna sit at at bars and take BG'S then it's not for you, (not that i'm saying i don't enjoy doing that, cus i do) it's totaly wild and you can't really explain it if you wanna know what a good party is then go. and yes there are 1000's of girls there Falang and Thai so you can still chat till the sun comes up.

It's very true that you can't really understand how big a party this is unless you've actually been.
Try to imagine 8-10 thousand people partying on 1 beach.
And on that 1 beach there are about 15 bars with stages set-up and each bar has their own dj playing different tunes. WILD!!!
It is definately something you can't get in Patong and is not something you want to get in Patong. The beaches are left a disaster and the party goes for about 4-5 days. It's nice to just get in & get out.
Here's a pic from when I was there that was taken early the following morning. The amount of people still going is amazing.
(I'm going to have to figure out how to re-size the pic...)

Its bullshit that backpackers don't shower. Why are there so many people talking down on backpackers. 80 % of them are exactly the same people as you and me. They just come to thailand with a backpack and not a suitcase and they hang around more in Khao san road then Sukhumvit for example. And they are more likely to travel around Thailand more instead of staying most of the time at the same place. Other then that i see no difference.
