There is no legal age minimum for the consumption of alcohol. You must be at least 18 to buy alcohol. You must be at least 18 to work in a bar. You must be at least 20 to enter a bar (unless you work there).
Farangs who look even close to 18 are rarely challenged to produce proof of age.
Sex/age issues are covered here

You're wrong there: Persons over 100 years of age may enter a bar provided they are accompanied by both parents....

Although with the current trends of police raiding clubs and checking passports in tourist spots, it may be more trouble than it's worth for the lad.

Really? Myself and another from our group will both be at least a few months under 20 when we go. Neither of us look that young though. Think we need to be careful what places we go to?
Also, any idea of what the punishment would be? A simple fine or something more serious?

Singapore girl got arresting in BKK for being 19 in a bar.. Thrown in jail and was hard to reach her parents (also holidaying in BKK) who then came to bail her out.. If she hadnt had anyone to help it would have been a drama.. She was bailed and fined in the AM.. Without someone to bail her she might have been in the system a few days sorting a lawyer and things from the inside without support can be impossible.
Very unusual and very rare but did happen and it was all posted on ThaiVisa..

I always say you wouldnt abuse the law back home by ignoring legal drinking age, so why do it on holidays. You should respect the law of land that you are visiting.
Having said that, I suggest that you stick to the smaller bar beers and give the larger gogo's and discoes a miss.

Confused

I'm a little bit confused & somewhat put off a little, after reading a recent thread where a BM said he had taken his children to the MTB whilst on hols. It was also said by Nicke that children were welcome at his bar.
(I posted my query here, rather than hijack the BM's thread, which is about his hols.)
After reading the above quote from Tyfon & after reading what the BM & Nicke said, can anyone see why I'm confused??

Unless you look very young i seriously doubt that anyone will ask you for ID when buying a drink.

The thing is open air beer bars are open to the street.. so the distinction between being in a public place and being in the bar is very grey area..

a lot of places tend to look at the baht in your pocket rather than how much of a babyface you got. you'll be fine.

Whilst I have your attention, could you answer another query please?
Is it a regular nightly occurance, to have kids in open air beer bars?

No not realy. And what Nicke meant was not that kids was welcome in his bar to drink, but to hang out with their parents.

Hi easyrider
Sure, kids are welcome in the bars, but that doen't mean they can buy booze.
As long as they are behaving,a couple of drinks whilst they are on holiday with you isn't a problem. Also, don't expect to see kids running riot around the bars whilst their parents get blotto,it just doesn't happen.
BTW,How is the leg now,got rid of the limp now I hope. Make sure to introduce yourself to Nicke in MTB,and he will point out the BMs to you.

You mean that Mrs. Dawsey stays sober whilst you ..........
Final countdown Rodge? Have a nice time and I'll try and spy you on the webcam.
My ontopic comment:
I did not see any under 18s in soi Eric, but one night in Love bar 2 swedish lads turned up. One was smoking a ciggie trying to look older than his delicate years of about 14, the other looked 16. They were soon shooed away by one of Geir's ladyboys.

underage in bars
I would not think that the open beer bars will not allow tourists to drink their even if they are under 18 or 20 (at least not much).
hat I have seen many times is parents (fathers) bringing their sons with them into the bar and I find this just a little bit off-putting; maybe it is a misjudged try to teach their sons a few steps, but still...
Even more off-putting are parents bringing real young kids into the bars (I even have seen parents with their babies in a trolley). Please, if you had the mind to put children into this world, now it is time to face the music and stay with them back at your hotel and play on the beach.
At least in my opinion, a bar is definitely not a place ever to be seen by a kid (and it is no difference if it is 4 or 14), even in the most harmless manner. And obviously, what one could and will see in the bars in Phuket is definitely not harmless.
My 2 cents.
