Moulin Rouge Bar - Sea Dragon
I do not drink, never have, and I dont think I ever will, but thats not the point.
I just started going to this bar becaus ethe women, are very nice and I am friendly with a couple of them. Yesterday I was sitting there and since it was election no one could drink. So suited me fine, sat down ordered a bottle of soda, played some games had some fun.
Today the mamasan and boss were there. I sit down, start chatting to the girl I have known a few days, and start playing games as per usual. Ordered a soda which was 40 baht. Not a problem, but I notice they only gave me a glass this time. So i finish up drinking the glass, and I ask for the rest of the bottle. To which they say - oh no you pay per glass.... and i was like what? I pay 40 baht for a bottle of soda, not a small glass filled with ice. Well without getting too angry, I just pay the 40baht and leave.
But this is the very first time in 10 months of living here, I have been charged for a GLASS of soda and not a bottle.
So if the boss reads this good, if not oh well, but what a complete tit he is, and next time i see him, i think i will tell him it. Ok so he wont care that he loses my business. Well me anyway. I should have just left 20baht and walked away. Oh well.....

i think his point is marc--he went to the bar the first time and bought a BOTTLE of soda for 40 bht --the second night he bought a BOTTLE of soda--they poured some into a small glass and kept the rest but charged him 40bht for a GLASSfull
they moved the goal posts so to speak

well you have the capital outlay of the glass, then the overheads of washing, drying, storage and the ice!

Dont ring the bell you might have to pay for soda for everyone present...
just joking am agree they should sell by the bottle and a prize with reasonable profit say 50 baht.....suggest you put this bar on your black - list.
Years ago used to drink whisky\soda....now am in trouble did i pay for the
whole bottle or ..................

Loads do..
I sometimes drink minouw and soda if I am not drinking. .Sometimes you get glass and bottle sometimes just glass.. I would say 50/50..
And if the first glass is >50% of the bottle then your worried about <20 bahts worth of soda.. Time to get a grip.. I catch myself getting all bothered when charged 40 baht farang price for something cooked instead of 30 - 35 baht.. Then I realize what I am worrying about..

I guess the vast majority of us can afford the 40 baht charge so I don't think it's about the price in itself.... perhaps Electro looks at it as a matter of principle (and - as matters of principle go - I find it hard to disagree with him, whether it's 40 or 4,000 baht).

I re-read Electro's post and apperently the one and only problem was he ordered a bottle of water but got a glass of water instead and to the price of a bottle... He even pointed out that paying 40 Baht for a bottle was Ok and well I don't concider my self cheap but 40 baht for a glass of water? For most of us that go to LOS a few times a year and are used to farang prices of course it's nothing but for someone that lives there and maybe is on a budget it's understandable I think

they are looking at you being in their venue during a peak hour. so they charge extra, that same bottle of water would be 5usd in the states!

Well this is it, thanks for some of you who see my point. Cheap Charlie or not, isn't the bar owner being tight fisted more than me? I will pay upto 60baht for soda wateralbeit the 330ml or the 500ml bottle. But i dont expect a 200ml glass full of ice and a thimble full of soda water in it.
It is the principal of the thing as well as the - rip off the farang.
Believe me I am on a budget, people think I am crazy living on 12k a month - 4k rent, 1k electric, 1k telephone/adsl, 6k to live off is little. So you see I try and be careful..After a short trip to Udon Thani last month, I really loved it there and was a change for the better. Soda 20baht.... bottle of beer from 40baht...i think heineken was 60 a bottle.

I am suprise that such a small silly thing is mention 40baht for a bottle or a glass of soda and ml are measured, I know the owner, but not well, I will print this and give it to him as he doesn't read this site as a fovour to you but....personally I laught at you for being so silly and petty over this matter.
Its not the bar ripping you off or you to cheap but your budget is just to low. (for farang leaving in patong)
I believe you need new work if you live on 12 thousand a month....
better start a new tread asking "looking for job at least over 20 k a month".

living tight on 12,000 a month, but in the udon seems many can live on that sort of income.
the boys there complain about 45 - 50 baht for a beer in the farang bars.
cobra gold coming soon so business picks up for the farang businesses, pattaya based BGs return home for holiday and good money. some real high earners returned home last time, better money available there than in pattaya, newbies abound.

Aye, same in the UK. Really annoys me if I am spending lots on booze already (and believe me I do). Don't mind paying 40 - 50 Baht but 100 just annoys me, especially since most bars in Patong don't charge that much. Then again I am fool enough to pay 250 Baht for a pint of Guinness.....

Raw I think you fail to see the point of this. It has nothing to do with how much I earn, how much farangs earn, but how you get ripped off, just because you are a farang. Like I said, lived here for 10 months, and never once been in a bar that has charged me for a glass of soda. Soda costs what... 4baht? 6 baht in tescos, 8 baht in 7/11 10baht in a family run corner shop. I dont care if the bottle was 60 baht or not, the point being, is that no where I have been has ever charged for a glass. When you ask for a beer, its not poured into a glass, and then half of it is left under the counter is it? No you get the bottle.
But like I said, I think you have missed the point of the thread. As for printing it out, as a favour for me, thats upto you. I don't see it as a favour, but maybe next time I walk past his bar, I will tell him face to face, when hes not drunk of course. But then again, what bar owners in Thailand are ever sobre?

I tried to post this a day or so ago but my net has been down..
You do realize that many of the larger bars (scruffys etc perhaps the MR ??) have a soda machine.. The machine spits out soda water / sprite / cokes etc for mixers..
If a place has a machine how are they supposed to keep you happy ?? Perhaps the bottle system was not in place or they had no bottles or they were not refrigerated or one of any things. .
I fail to believe in the months you have been here this is the first time you have got a glass... I would think I get a glass a high % of the times I ask for a minouw and soda.. Also comparing it to a beer (which is drunk from the bottle) isnt the only comparison.. When you ask for an orange juice you get the bottle ?? Any fruit juice ?? No they put it into a glass..

I've started a few nights recently on soda/lime and I mostly get a bottle, but in a few places I've been given a glass - not sure I even batted an eyelid, certainly not when the bill came...
but maybe if I was living off 12k a month (no chance) I would be more fussy about getting an extra 30ml of soda.
Next time ask for a bottle of soda and see what happens
