liquor in thailand

Hey all. In addition to in bars, where can you get alcohol in LOS. Are there liquor stores that are 24 hours or anything? Is it really expensive to buy non-domestic liquor, like scotch?

In Canada we can only buy alcohol from the LCBO liquor store, the Beer Store, or the Wine Rack.

I'm curious because I'm the type who likes to have a more than a few at the bar, but still leave well before I'm senseless--this is especially true in 'rough' parts of town, not so much on my home turf--but I always like to "finish the job" with a bottle back home.

So, how hard is it to get a bottle? That may sound like a silly question, sorry.

thanks,
me

All over los you will find the 'Seven eleven' stores, like a mini mart.

Open 24 hours a day despite the store name, you can get whisky in there for a fair price but they don't have quite the same range as a thai liquor store/tobacco shop.

I usually pop by one of those (proper liquor places) in the daytime to pick up my fave..a bottle of jack daniels, large bottle of coke and if my mini bar has a freezer compartment...a bag of ready made ice cubes from the liquor store too.

http://www.7eleven.co.th/main.html

From memory I think
100 pipers scotch whisky will cost around 300 baht
Jack Daniels around 900 - 1000 baht
Jonny Walker Black/Red label 900-1000 baht
Thai whiskies - cheaper still than pipers

There are plenty of places to buy a bottle for the hotel room.

Your hotel room will most likely have a mini bar also and there are usually Half bottles of Scotch Vodka etc in that, which are a bit more expensive than the shops but still quite cheap.

Yes thats one thing that realy amazed me first time i was down. The roomservice and minibar prices are not as madly overpriced as they are everywhere else in the world.

Legally alcohol sales are not permitted 24 hours per day. There is a ban from 14:00 to 17:00 daily, and also even 7/11's cant sell after a certain time, I think is something like midnight or 01:00. Having said that, TIT

Why can't they sell between 14:00 to 17:00 daily, they have siesta or something? Do you mean 2.00 to 5.00?

They can sell from 11.00 til 14.00 then 17.00 til 23.00.It's supposed to help the Thai's cut down on their drinking???It's a bummer when you are stood waiting in the check out queue at Tesco with your booze and you get to the till at 14.03.They just point to the clock and put your booze back.

I have been to the Big C on Second road in Pattaya and they had a sign that said that you could not buy any wine unless it was over 10 liters total between 2:00 and 5:00 PM.

I simply went to a small shop and had no problems buying anything I wanted.

NO its as I stated, 14:00 to 17:00, why, who knows. I havent come across anyone that can explain why. I suggest some moron in Bangkok had a brain fart, and thought what a wonderful idea, another way to screw things up.

It is meant to be countrywide and everywhere, but as I said TIT.

During these hours you can purchase so long as you buy 10 litres or more.

Its only a recent law.. Small shops ignore it but I think 7/11 adheres now..

I had a feeling there was restrictions when I was posting before but wasn't sure what time.

I'm almost positive I have bought whisky after midnight though, as you say.. TIT
