Upcomming Bar Closing Day(s)
Starting this thread so expat locals can inform/update info about upcomming bar closing days - please do not use this thread to moan about fact that these happen - its a fact of life here and just have to respect Thai laws.
Apart from the 11th July closure - there is a by-election now scheduled for 22nd July. [This will mean midnight closing on 21st and no alcohol sales before 10pm 22nd -- so the effective bar closing will be night of July 21st].
The by-election will be held on July 22 in the Kathu area in District 2. [which covers Patong]. The 17 polling stations will be open from 8 am to 3 pm. The member for this constituency, Boonma Eabsub, resigned on June 1.

Just to clarify! Is it all alcohol sales that are suspended on these days? i.e. Hotels, 7 elevens/off licences (or whatever they are called!)
If i'm in LOS on one of these days, will i have to stock up????

UPDATE 10th & 11th July (Buddhist Lent)
Understand that the following is happening in Patong now -
Sunday night - Bars allowed open until 6am
Monday night - Bangla Festival - BARS CLOSED (NO alcohol sales)
Tuesday night - Alcohol sales permitted AFTER midnight.
Pad Mc - Yes ALL acohol sales are banned during the periods stated. Resturants allowed to open but no alcohol.
Heard comment that discos may be allowed open on Monday but not bars - but I cant get confirmation on this. (My internet connection been down since luch time here).

Letter distributed by the police tonite stated 2 closing days, being Monday and Tueday. (BTW, distributed at most places around 10 PM the day before closing...)
Am not sure if that means that alcohol sales can resume midnight Tuesday. Will depend most likely on the mood and who is in charge..

HM Queen Birthday (Mothers Day)
COOPS et al - yes Aug 12th is Bar Closing Day - usual rules and this is a widely respected day which doubles as the nations Mothers Day.
Note that 14th Aug is Bank Holiday (not bar closing day) in leiu of the Sat holiday - so Gov offices and banks will be closed this day.

Queens Birthday is a closing day every year, so dont expect any bars to be open that time.

No girls??
Hi Big man you should have stayed in Patong there were alot of FLs around Bangla on the Monday night. Tuesday by midnight it was also very busy.
I enjoyed the closure on Monday as Patong had a very different subduded atmosphere and me and my little friend had a great relaxing walk along the beach road in a very chilled out atmosphere.

HM King endorses 15th Oct General Election
HM King has endorsed the 15th Oct as General Election - meaning night of 14th ALL alcohol sales will be banned nationwide. Bar may be allowed to open from midnight on the 15th Oct - more nearer the time. This ends the uncertainty (hence SET rally) - details here:
http://www.bangkokpost.com/breaking_....php?id=110505
PS _ Tonight is bar closing night in Patong - if your thirsty - Kamala and Karon as well as Phuket City unaffected.
PPS - Stevem - add to your list (Gen Election in Sticky).

A bit off-topic, but hmmm maybe I'll give Kata / Karon a try tonight. It is afterall Friday (not that THAT is of much importance anyway).
I actually spent most of my vacations (and nights) in Kata before I moved here. But I haven't been doing a night out in Kata in years. I suspect it's gone downhill from what it used to be 5 years ago though, and it being the low season and all. But hey, it beats UBC.

You are concerned about your liver, and then you ask about the nightlife?!!!
Just kidding. I know what you mean. I can go out here for a beers, but when I venture down to Patong, it’s always, well… a lot more.
Anyway, the nightlife here is actually not that bad IMO. We have about 10+ bars on the main road, and they are fairly busy. The quality of the girls are perhaps so-so, but some are worth a visit (like the Beer Garden). On the beach road, the activity picks up considerably about mid-November.
Just a side-note: I have always found Kamala to be a great place to live. However, as of late, I have had some bad driving experiences, and would like to try cut down the hours on my bike to a minimum. For this --- and a couple of other reasons --- I am seriously considering moving back to Patong (Nanai).

Went to Kata / Karon on the bar-closing day, and must say the nightlife was pretty dismal. Used to go there a few years ago, and even in the low-season it was magnitudes better than now.
I know the area is becoming more and more a family destination, but didn’t realize it was THAT bad. Also, some girls told be it was more busy than usual due to the bars in Patong being closed.
Anyway, just my experience.

What was the July 11th closure for?
I remember having a txt message from a girl in Bkk a couple of weeks ago about the start of Buddist lent and she was going to a temple, was this the day?
The reason is I am planning a trip at the start of October and she says she is going home for the end of Buddist lent on October 8th, would this also be a bar closing day?
Edit
Ok lads just looked at the sticky, Closed Oct 7th pavarna day Could be something to do with lent maybe
