To be honest I dont drink much so if I buy half a dozen or so lady drinks I still end up only spending 1000/1500baht....and lets be honest - that isnt a great deal of money to most of us, and after all its the girls 'job' we're talking about.

Very well put les1999. I have a bar and go and drink with some of my friends that own bars in the same soi or in other soi's. I know quite a lot of the girls as friends and every time I go in to my friends bars I ALWAYS buy lady drinks. Just like you les, I at times only have a few drinks but spend big on lady drinks because it helps my friends bar, helps the lady and also helps them send some money back to their family.... and that's me earning Thai Baht and not Euro, Dollar, Sterling etc.
It's not much to us but it's a hell of a lot to them... Just think of buying a 150 baht drink here in Thailand or a $12.00 cocktail back home somewhere....

The reality is that an average BG makes as much, if not more than a typical Thai mid-level corporate executive.
The TanMan[/quote]
What does a Thai mid-level exec make???
What % of BGs. do you think make this sort of money?
I reckon that as many as 90% would be just scraping through in the low season and even in the high season there would still be a high percentage who rely almost entirely on L/Drinks.

Your friend, ( who speaks Thai ) so i assume he has made a few visits, brags he only pays 60 bht for l/drinks. this dosn't leave much of a cut for the lady, if indeed any cut at all.
You state you will only buy "real drinks" I can only assume you'r terrified the lady may earn a little commission.
I stand by my earlier statement. TIGHT ARSSESS. who have no consideration for these ladies.

I won't answer that question but i will say that when i'm in Los, I don't expect the ladies to work for nothing. I wouldn't ,so why should they.

If a BG sits chatting or playing "bar games" , if one of the bar staff is polite and looks after me or if the cashier ( Rung from MTB) treats me as a friend and always smiles when I go to the bar , then I will gladly buy them a drink.
They all make my holiday enjoyable and for the sake of 100/150 Baht which is nothing to me but the commission can help them , then I see no problem.
I guess those who object to buying Lady Drinks also do not tip staff in their home countries, that is Up 2 U , but I'm sure you'd soon post if BG's don't talk to you or bar staff ignore you. Remember ,even in LOS , good service and happy staff are a two way thing , treat them well and they will reciprocate.

I don't know why anyone would want any of the local girls in los to think that you are a tight cnut for the sake of a few bahts for a drink. I sure that a cheap charlie rep would be easy to spread around all the bars in an area. So why be soo tight over a few fcuking bahts!
Like Faulty, I don't mind buying anyone a drink, be it another BM, a BG, a cashier or a passing buffalo. As long as there nice/smile happy etc. Hopefully there are a few bgs at MTB who could back this up. But I wont go into a bar as a newbie and just buy drinks when asked or expected.
If there is one thing i hate more than cheap charlies its anyone who takes my money/drinks for granted/expected.
Well thats my 3 paragraphs worth!

Yeah from what I hear, there are alot of sick buffalo's around Thailand. I think its because of all the drink i keep buying them! Generally costs about 50 000bahts to cure a hangover i gather!

Most of us I think are really nice, generous guys, most of you have said, heck its only a few bahts. The bit I do dislike though is the bars that trade off that generous attitude for their own benfit. Yes of course the bg gets her cut but its the bars that insist on all their girls constantly asking all the customers for a drink. The second or third bar on the left as you go up Soi Eric to me is the worse example of this, I always have a chat and a laugh with the two girls whose job it is to get you into the bar but once in a girl will sit opposite you and the first thing she will ask is 'you buy me drink?' what ever happened to 'hansum man were you from?', once she has her drink another will plonk one of the games in front of you and you know within 2 minutes she will also want a drink, the owner women will then come over introduce herslf and immediately ask for a drink, this will just go on for as long as you sit there.
Definately a bar to avoid, especially for the newbie. As for ladydrinks of course you buy the girl you are chatting to a drink especially if you are considering barfining her, crikey how much have you spent on drinks for girls in your home country and then not gone home with them? and usually they are fecking hard work to talk to most of the time as well.

I think you mean the Black Rose, Dodger. Used to go there a lot, but to many asking for drinks (including the owner woman and her cousin trying to get you into the bar), and the price for a lady drink was not what you would call "honest".

I agree with what your saying.
Theres a big difference between buying drinks for the lady that's keeping you company and buying them for all and sundry just because they ask you.
I for one am not afraid to refuse to buy drinks if i don't want to and if i'm hassled too much i'll show my displeasure, drink up and leave. I've even been known to tell them to fcuk off and stop hassling me.
Having said that, if i'm happy with a ladies company, i'll buy her drinks.
Also, when i leave, if the staff deserve it i'll always leave a tip for the bar.
If i sit down in a bar for a drink am served without a smile and am left on my
own with no one giving me any attention. Which sometimes happens, usually early in the evening, I definitely won't leave a tip.

Every evening I visited MTB last trip, I got the girls a lady drink each. They always look after me and my family when I'm there,so its the least I can do.
When it gets busy,I never have a problem with Noy or one of the other girls serving me quickly either. But the girls there are not known to me to hassle customers for a LD, though Noy sometimes asks when she is a little mao

My friend who speaks Thai claims he only ever pays 60 baht per lady drink AND when i was there i usually refused to buy a lady drink every hour instead id order 2 real drinks and give the girl one
...and your friend is a liar and is claiming that just to look good in your eyes. No bar would let you pay 60baht for a ladydrink. I don't know of any beer bar round Patong that has LD for less than 120 baht these days and there are 1 or 2 rogue bars charging 200.
The cheapest LDs I know of are 90baht in some of the Pool bars.

Yes !
I to hate this thing happens allmost every night. Sometimes they just leave the "drink" standing on the table and not drink it.
I´m not Cheap Charlie, but I hate ladies I give a drink, just for leave it and go chat with her friends. So from now I only give drinks for ladies that I like and maybee go with for the night. And if she is "right" I love to buy her even ten drinks

Thats exactly how I work it aswell, I dont mind buying drinks for the girls, But I take exception to girls asking every 5mins trying to push them onto to you without so much as a conversation... I just tell them "No" straight out if I am feeling in a good humour, And like you if not, I have also been known to just tell them to piss off hassling me
It also does not give a good impression of the bar when the girls do this, Total opposite and they will probably lose a lot more in the longrun, Especially with the loss of your repeat custom, But then again this is Thailand and they dont think about the future!!
