nightclub and social wear
hey all,
Well I head to Thailand tomorrow afternoon
So just packing and had a few questions. Just wondering what the normal clothing style is for clubing and eating out over there?
I just got back from Bali from 6 weeks relaxing and all youo take there is thongs, shorts, t-shirts. Everyone in the clubs and places to eat wear that style cloths so it is very relaxed.
So Just wondering if I need similar in Thai or do more people wear jeans and such? Never been to Thai so not sure and I would guess it would be to hot for jeans.
Just do not want to drag cloths or shoes and stuff over there that I will not wear so I have more room in my bag to bring more stuff home when returning
Also on a similar point, on my trips to Bali all I take is 2 shirts and 2 shorts and basics like brush etc'. When I get there you can buy illegal coppied billabong and quicksilver shorts and shirts for $3.00 each so I just buy all my cloths there as I need them. So does Patong have similar stuff like coppied surf wear cheap that I can also buy there save taking a lot my own cloths over?
I know this is the night life sectionn but it started off on a night life topic
What are the main things that Thai' sell cheap ? Bali is all things hand made like wood carvings and cloths and such.
Thanks

You wont be bared from entry anywhere in shorts and thongs (its what I wear 9 times from 10) but most guys do tend to mix in light jeans and shirts for evenings in the bars..
Thailand has cheap copies but not as good quality as Bali.. Bali has a better surf climate and a bit more 'style' in the surf scene clothes.. Cheap surf print shirts range from 80 - 100 to 150 baht per shirt.. If your large buying clothes (especially shoes) can be a bit harder.. If your not big (jeans to 34 inch waist common enough) then light jeans and items you might want are also cheap..
What do Thais sell cheap (except for pussy) ?? Same tourist tat as Bali.. Fancy a woven hammock.. Maybe a wooden Harley.. Copy handbags.. Pirate DVDs.. Etc etc

When you say "Thailand", do you mean only Phuket? Or will you also spend time in Bangkok?

I always wear casual in Phuket.
T-shirt/Singlet and shorts and sandals. I notice most men like to go topless when it's really hot, but i think a singlet would be more appropriate.
Unless you go to restaurants or some bars that require smart casual wear.
You can buy clothes at Patong, no worries, just got to bargain. You can find most surf brands there.

Ahhh think I will leave the union jack thong at home 55555
I think most my 4 weeks will all be at Phuket/patong but I have thought of heading to Bangkok to have a look maybe.
Thanks livinLos, for that info. I might go with bringing my own cloths and some jeans then as well and they might be handy if I head to Bangkok.
Well only 1 sleep till I make my way there
Any last minute things I might need that are hard to find there since I will be there a month? I bring my own rubbers 5555
One more question what are things like video cammeras like in prices over there and are they ok as in I leave thailand and they break?
Thanks

Thanks Nautilus, U posted as I did
Well looks like a little bit casual and a little dressy for nights.
One more question save starting a new thread in another section but what does a scooter rent for a day if I hire one for 30 days?
I had one all the time in Bali and they were only $3 Au over there.
Thanks

Electronics like camcorders are pretty much the same price, if not a bit dearer (than England anyway)
Scooter should be about 250baht a day, maybe cheaper if you ask up front for a month

Last few trips i've worn jeans on the flight to and from Thailand, but the rest of the time i've just worn shorts. All the places I go to in Patong & Pattaya don't require anything more, and wearing jeans is just too uncomfortable. However if the occasion warrants it - i.e. your taking a special girl out to dinner, or going to an upmarket bar or nightclub, then you should dress for it. But if your just in Patong to drink and sleaze, then i wouldn't bother. In your brand name surfie clothes you can't go wrong, and you'll look heaps better than some of the shocking fashion statements i've seen around Bangla come nightfall.

3 exceptions to this I'm aware of ...
#1 Temples and high religious/Royal sites - the highly revered temples such as Wat Pra Keow and Wat Pho as well as the Royal Palace will not allow entry by guys in shorts or shirtless.
#2 Government offices - best put a bit of effort in when dealing with officials - immegration, police, ampur etc.
#3 Home Bar - they are the only bar I know and have seen people denied entry based on dress ... not sure how high end resturants like Joe's Place, Silk (urtherman can comment on these) would react, but I've never seen anyone refused entry.
Thai's especially away from the bar/entertainment industry are very image concious and will judge you according to the way you dress.

Well we will have to agree to dissagree..
I still have and wear gear I bought on Bali a decade ago.. Gear thats been in regular wash rotation for 10 years !!! Thai stuff rarely lasts more than a few months..
Also on Bali the quality of the surf brands is just way higher than the basic prints here.. Stussy, quicksilver, rusty, lost, rush, etc.. Here its just silk screened prints there you get dress shirts, embroidered, etc etc etc.. They seem to have the boutique surf fashion thing totally absent from this market.
Go look in the clubs around Seminyak.. Ku De Ta.. Just around the hotspots.. Much better dressed than most Patong customers IMO.. Even the indo lads dress better, baggy shorts and skate fashion style..

I did mean nightspots in Patong.. In BKK dress is definately something you want to consider if going clubbing..
Home bar doesnt seem to impose a dress policy any more.. Gov offices I still wear shorts tho I am know that its not advisable..
I actually dont own a pair of trousers any more !!!

If you want to pull tat dress like a t.at, Thais are impressed by clothing far more than farangs, you will not fail to pull dressed in a turban and high heels but if you really wants someone a little better dress to impress.
Heh shoot me down short and singlet wearers, before you do tell me if you have dressed up a little to see the difference.

Dodger's right on. In SE Asia at least, if you dress a little above the norm it pays off in spades.

I wore nice khaki shorts and a nice polo shirt most every night in Phuket. Had no problems meeting ladies. Never wore a T shirt at night except during the wettest day of Songkran.
But then I have so much brown hair on my legs that maybe the ladies thought I was wearing khaki pants.55555555

Girls like nice clothes.......
Wear what you feel comfortable with and for me that excludes jeans as its way too hot for them.
Found that during the Kings 60 year celebration a bold yellow t-shirt even a frang one was always commented on. I suppose its about face to many girls if the guy makes an effort it may give a better (maybe false) impession of "face" to her mates..

Maybe you look better accessorizing with a green bottle!
and of course Heinekin is more expensive so make you look like big spender, more face for her.
