Hi my name is eric. I am from British Columbia and am planning a trip to thailand in my summer, the rainy season. I'm not letting the weather get in the way though! Kind of looking forward to lower prices, at least at hotels. I was wondering about the enforcement of checking tourists for ID when entering hotels, beer bars, a gogos and massage...regarding the recent raise to twenty years old for some aspects of nightlife and drinking. Any information would greatly help me to plan my trip further. Thanks

How old are you?? That will help a great deal in an accurate answer.

Tip: always carry ID when operating a motorbike. Driver's license instead of passport should do.

Thanks for your interest.. IJ I have spent so many hours searching this forum, google, and all other sorts of websites...any time the word age is mentioned it is regarding the age of bg's etc...By the way I am 18...look 18...hope that will help (locations would be Pattaya and Bangkok)

Drinking age is 20.. Most bars and gogo will let you in but your the one who can go to ail should there be a bust..

I think most clubs you will get in but may be refused at Bed / Q bar / etc.. Unsure ??

Patts probably ok everywhere..

Go to Jail if there is a bust? Would money resolve that issue...Is age such an issue that my luck may be better in Cambodia? I am very intrigued by the Soapy Massage... Would taking advantage of that experience involve age?

Thats drinking laws.. Laughably prostitution is illegal so no one can have a soapy massage (so my missus keeps reminding me)..

Its not a big deal.. But there is a small but real risk..

Hotels, no problem
beer bars, hit or miss but your chances are good
gg's, hit or miss but your chances are good
massage soapies serve alcohol (or at least the two I have been to), again hit or miss but I would guess your chances are good.

Dress smart. And if you wear a cap, make sure the bill is pointing forward rather than backward or to the side.

It is possible to get caught in the police net on a raid that is intended to catch the girls using drugs. You might be able to buy your way out, but TIT.

If you are going to the gogo's in BKK, try the third floor of the Nana Plaza as they are usually tipped off as soon as the police enter the plaza. Stay off the first floor in other words.

You will not get into the high end clubs/disco's in BKK for sure. They do card.

This is all very helpful, I figure I should be waiting another year to go. But this is the best time to get time off college and work. Would a fake ID (Driver's Liscence be useful) or hopeless. And any idea if these restrictions are present in Cambodia? Because That is another destination on the trip.

Thailand is more organized (expecially Pattaya) for your entertainment needs than just about anyplace else there is. Just read the "newbies area" and look at the postings about the night life scene etc and you will find most everything you will need to know.
At your age realize that you will be noticed constantly by all the ladies, young and old. 5555

being noticed by everyone eh, that sounds like a great thing...or will it become a problem?
My basic question is how strict are ID cheques for farangs who dont look too young but look the age range of 17-21 depending on whose viewpoint
The other things like scuba diving, and sightseeing will take up the brunt of the trip but enjoying the nightlife will definately be the ideal way to cap off the trip so just wondering if we will have access to it all!

You say you are 18 but possibly look younger , so if the police were checking you may "stand out". You then show a fake I.D , which may cause suspicion . Officially , they can ask to see your passport.

Chances are you could have a great holiday and never get asked for I.D , depends on where you go , beer bars etc should be no problem but Go-Go's or Clubs may be more strict on age.

Do you have problems in BC when out drinking , are you routinely asked to prove your age.

If he's out drinking in BC at 18 he is breaking the law anyway the age is 19 there i believe.

I were there last month and I'm 18 too. I were never asked for ID anywhere and I visited clubs, beer bars and Go-Go's. People say that i look older than 18 though... The beer bars don't care, that's for sure. If they asked for my age I said 18 and they didn't mind.
