Star Club is closed

The Star Club is closed and the neon signs are removed, just 2 months after they had grand opening for the new club with a new name.

The question is what is going to happen now?

Yes, if they had good business they wouldnt close down and remove the signs. I dont know what deal they had, but maybe they had just one year lease to try things out and in that case that year is gone now.

What I have heard from customers in the bar, Star Club didnt have so many people, Dragon is doing a lot better at the moment.

I thought that Tiger Disco and Star club, where owned by the same guy?
If It's right, I would never understood why he did shut down Tiger for a while, has Tiger been renovated before it re-opened.

My last visit to Patong was in May 2003 and then only Star Club was open.

If some of the above is totally wrong, do not blaim me.

Reason Star Club (ex Star World/Shark) closed is basic reason Patong cannot support more than 2 large night clubs - history has shown this, with Tin Mine (they remodelled this into the now defunct Beach Club) and Pasha (also closed).
Dragin club is small in comparison and as a new place is doing OK, but after the likely stricter enforcement of earlier closing (it now really gets going after the bars have shut and stay open pretty 'late') wonder weather it will survive.
Still further supporting argument that this is nothing to do with social order but rather a land grab, today's Nation.....

Property prices set to plunge

Published on Feb 25, 2004

Land owners on the periphery of Bangkok’s central business district (CBD) are set to feel the pinch from the capital’s new zoning laws, with property prices tipped to plunge between 14 and 27 per cent, a leading industry figure said yesterday.

Wasan Khongchantra, deputy managing director of the Agency for Real Estate Affairs, said areas most affected would be Pinklao and the Rama IIIRoad area, where property prices were expected to fall by more than 20 per cent.

He said other areas set to experience a severe property-price nosedive included Klong Toei, the Rama 9 Cable Bridge and Sukhumvit Road up to Soi 39.

The new laws, set to be implemented before July, also left little room for the development of high- and large-scale developments in Silom, Sathorn and Phaholyothin areas, he said.

Wasan said that under the new laws, Bangkok’s CBD and surrounding areas needed to be concerned about the floor-area ratio and open-space ratio, meaning property developers would construct smaller buildings but the size of land plots would remain the same.

Developers would also have to open more space than before.

He said that under the new laws an 18-story building on a 15-rai plot would have to have an open space of fiverai.

As a result, land prices for developing commercial buildings would likely decrease.

“The concept of the new Bangkok city-zoning law is good, but too late,” he said.

The Nation

OK it's about Bangkok, but if Soi Sea Pearl imminent demise and Star Club closure (I reckon Star Club will never reopen; probably will be bought by the massive new complex opposite as a car park or BigC/Lotus!) then the push to 'adjust' actual ownership of entertainment venues will press on.

Still Patong faces nothing like the uncertaties of Nana and Sukhumvit, and lets see what next week brings - lets hope things are not too severe, note TRT lost in Sonkla and Nation poll now has 96% opposed to the earlier closing rules. It's likely that our Thai brother's will end up being the ones who will bring about a more measured decision, but that's it from me on this issue.

Good luck and party while you can!
