A Night In Patpong

Hi guy's as promised I will tell you about a night I had in Patpong with my wife. We were sitting in numerous GoGo bars over the night drinking Mekong whiskey when my wife decided to go visit the next level of bar (ping pong ball show)as she said when in Rome do what the Romans do. We had been accosted many times just walking down the night market with business cards. You know what I mean. Anyway we walked up to a hawker of the establishment and was told it was 20baht for the show. This was okay as in 89 it was quite cheap. We where ushered to a table where we sat down to order a drink. My wife ordered 7up and I ordered Kloster Beer both 20baht each. next thing we know two girls jump of the stage and sit on opposite sides of us. One had no knickers and sat beside my wife, the other had no bra and sat beside me. Another girl came over and had what seemed to be plastic bags with something white in them which turned out to be lanolin cloths for cleaning your hands. After both of them wiped our hands with these cloths it was evident that they thought we were interesed in more. They were asking for smokes and drinks and when I said no not Knowing the custom of course I was a cheap Charlie. As we were not interested in picking up I probably offened them by saying no. They were not convinced. They simutaneously grabbed our hands and stuck them downstairs. Both my wife and I took our hands away straight away not knowing what to think. (Total Shock!). Both of us decided this was not for us as pu--y smoking cigarettes and ping balls can be a bit monotonous so I said to my wife I think enough is enough lets finish our drink and go back to the GoGo Bars. I also felt fairly uncomfortable with situation. We finished our drinks and went to the bar to pay the bill. The barman was filling his face eating a chicken leg. On paying the 60 baht bill the door was opened for us to leave only to find the Mammasan screaming from the back of the establishment. As I looked around at the noise I realised she was screaming at us and looked toward the barman who seemed to speak good english for him to gesture me back inside. Unfortunately for us at the time my wife had already left the building and I was about to follow when my wife followed me back in realising I was about to try and find out what the commotion was about. As we both went back in they locked the door which was a dungeon door with brass padlock and was not going to be opened by me or anyone else without a key. She was screaming incessantly demanding US $200. By this time I am starting to panick as we are locked in behind a very heavy door and padlock. Itried to talk to the barman who spoke english but he kept eating his chicken leg and just shrugged his shoulders. It left me no alternative to get my wife and I out of there. I grabbed the ***** by the throat and squeezed as hard as I could calling her for everything. Next thing the door opened and we were let out paying what we had already paid. Next time I will take the advice from Qantas as as you land in Don Muang in those days they toldyou to stay away from these bars. More of the trip to follow.

1989? Cheap? pre-1997, that's US$8.00 for a 7-up.

Baht was pegged at 25 baht/US$1 pre-1997. You posted you paid 200 baht for a 7-up, that's US$8.00 in 1989 prices. Probably the equivalent of $US16.00 today. Something's not right here....

no sorry it I was exhuberant on the price it was 20 baht. I hit the 0 key once to often. About the price of a Tuk Tuk in those days from the hotel out the front of patpong 1 & 2 that I was staying opposite 7 eleven. Very expensive with single beds. Can't remember the name but they were not that friendly as I had come from Indonesia (bali & Jakarta) I had no Thai Baht to give a tip at the time. Bell Porter Laughed at me every night.

1997 average was ~ 0.73 to USD - so at 25 USD/THB would have been 18 Baht = 1 AUD ... so thats a A$ 11 7-Up !!

OK, and the rest of your story is exactly why you stay out of the upstairs bars in Patpong. Too much risk in that... and a very common occurence. It's hit or miss up there.

Oh, and not trying to pick your story apart here again, but Kloster in 1989 too? You shua abow dat?

And its amazing you could grab the mamasan and get away with it.. Usually they have a hired gorilla for the extort phase of the transaction..

A rip off bar without muscle seems to be lacking a certain essential ingredient..

absolutely Tan Man Kloster and Singha were the beers. I hate Singha. It was the only beer in the fridge on the first night and I hated it. Kloster was my favourite. I am a Vb drinker in Victoria and this wasn't too bad. I also drink Bintang in Indoneisa and Tiger beer in Singapore and Malaysia. The rest is crap

Livinlos we are talking about 1989. There was no heavy's except the guy eating chicken behind the bar. He kept shrugging his shoulders pretending that he did not speak english at the time even though we new he did. Previous to that we did not have a problem. It was only after the Mammasan created a problem it became an issue. in those days I dont think I ever had any heavy's in any bar I visited> It was a one off occasion

Don't know 89 but in 91 they certainly had Klosters. Next to Singha another beer available in the early 90's was Thai Amarit. Amarit went bancrupt and San Mig light is brewed in that brewery now.

Hi Captain
don't know if I remmber thai amirit beer but may have tried it in thows days but I don't thinks so. I liked Kloster because it was the closest I could find to the beer you get in Australia. Mostly warm or sweaty however due to humidity

I have had a similar experience in Patpong, I didn't listen to the warnings about going to the upstairs bars in Patpong, I went there with my crew on a ferry flight from NZ to Muscat in Oman.
We got in and had a beer each, there was the ususal show on, when we wanted to leave we were presented with a bill of 4000 bath for 4 Kloster,
Since I was the Captain I took charge, and refused to pay that much.
The door got locked and a number of evil looking little Thai guys came out the the dark corners, we ended up paying the bill, and never again will I visit an upstairs bar in Patpong.

THE only upstairs bars in patpong i would venture into are the ones owned by king group queens castle 2/kings castle / pussy galore i hav never been ripped off in these bars but if you find yourself in a situation where you have been overcharged simply without fuss take the bill pay it and leave then take the bill to the tourist police desk at the suriwongse road end of patpong 1 and they will go with you and get your money back . I DID this with two aussie birds in 2003 no problems !

stick to the downstairs bars safari/kings corner/queens castle

Thanks to this forum I never went to any of the upstairs joints in Patpong during my trips, a fact confirmed by my TGF who showed me around the street level ones without any problems, but then she did do the talking which helps.

I was in BKK with my tg in November and she wanted to have a look at an upstairs joint in Patpong. After the Pinpong show finished we decided to leave and were presented with a bill for 1000 baht, refused to pay it and left paying only for the 2 x drinks we consumed, it think they were 200 baht. Very dodgy places indeed.

Good advice

I echo Neon's comments. After reading this forum I too took heed of the advice and stayed out of the upstairs bars when in Patpong. Even some of the lower level were ones were fairly full on in their approach for drinks, ST etc. That was enough for me.

I've been stitched up in other parts of the world so I research things more thoroughly these days.

This was a downstairs bar and I don't remember the name. however we had just left a Go Go bar which I bought a t'shirt from that I think was called Pussy a Go Go. I think it had sylvester the cat and Tweety Bird from the cartoon on front. Not sure as my wife has thrown it out. Then we decided to check out the pong pong show. What a mistake!. Anyway you learn and we frequented the restaurants and Go Go Bars after that in Bankok but we where only there for 3 days before we went to pattaya. Now this was an experience.
