2 is fine with me, I pick up my little lady the first evening I'm in Patong, and after that not much going to the bars.
She will stay with me in the hotel, spend time in the pool, and down to Chiang Rai seafood for dinner, and perhaps a few drinks, and then back to the hotel bar (Phuket Palace) for a drink and enjoy the music from the band.

Noticed many says just start earlier if they close at 2.
I really dont like this forced regulation.
Regulations is one of the reasons i left my old country. If i on occasion want to drink in a bar until very late thats an opportunity i appreciate to have.
And you have the caos that occurs when everything closes at the same time.
I tried to get hold of some food last night after closing. Soi sansabai was overpacked. Managed to track down some in Valhalla in the end.. Great food in there BTW.
Anyway, this will never last so no reason for panic.

Did the crowd move to safari after 2 am or was safari also closed that early?
Hell i still remember "falling" out of shark club in the morning just right to buy some food for the monks waiting there.

No. The buzz on the street (in Patong) was that Safari was also closed.
I drove up there just in case, but everything was closed.

Of course they bloody do!

If supporting the police in enforcing the law of the land is negative what is deemed to be a positive? At least I have the courtesy to PM other BMs if I have issue with them. Like you said a forum is a place to discuss topics and give opinions. Sounds like censorship to me- isn't that how Hitler started. I feel stigmatised and oppressed now. Get over here, see the real picture and then add comment. there's far too much b*tching on the forum at the moment.

Isn't there some big golf tournament going on in Phuket with all kinds of golf stars and foreign press....think that might have anything to do with the temporary closing times? I mean, assuming that it is temporary. Kind of Thai style isn't it?

Thats most likely the real cause for them to come here and do that, we discussed this last night in the bar.

Johnnie Walker Classic takes place at the beginning of this month Robaht, PM was down the other week with the Malaysian PM as well. That and the change over of the head of the police is part of the more high profile approach.
I hope this is seen as constructive comment by other BMs

Post is constructive , comments at the end just appear childish !!!!

Seems like fair comment to me- lets see!
Phuket Gazette Thursday, March 1, 2007
Gov gets tough on bars, violence and encroachment
PHUKET CITY: Phuket Governor Niran Kalayanamit has ordered police to continue their crackdown on bars in Patong opening after hours, saying that there were no exceptions in the law for “tourist provinces”.
At the Phuket Provincial Security Committee’s monthly meeting at the Thavorn Grand Plaza Hotel on Tuesday, Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Decha Budnampeth asked the Governor to clarify the province’s stance on the crackdown.
“I would like to know what provincial policy on the issue is because I’m sure that if we wanted to we could put a stop to all the entertainment venues that are breaking the law, but I’m worried that it could destroy the atmosphere in Patong.
“If I don’t take action, then police from Bangkok will come here and make arrests, and I will be the first one to be blamed,” Gen Decha said.
“Some entertainment venues don’t even have entertainment licenses, they have only licenses to sell alcohol off site. There are also venues that close at 1 am when the police are around then open again at 4 am or 5 am when police aren’t around. In fact we know who the owners of most of the places are but they continue to open illegally,” he added.
Gov Niran replied, “We have to enforce the law. If we do not we ourselves may get in trouble. There is no clause in the law saying that entertainment venues can open longer because we are a tourism province, so we have to follow the law as it is.
“If we have to arrest people, then we must arrest them. We should also introduce new measures to deal with repeat offenders such as permanently shutting bars that break the rules a certain number of times.”
The Governor also raised concern at the high level of violent crime on the island and urged police to bring perpetrators to justice.
Gen Decha told the Governor that he had recently gone to inspect developments by helicopter and had found many luxury properties, especially around Laem Son and Leam Sing, that have built steps down to the sea that are possibly illegal.
Gov Niran said that next time he would go up in the helicopter with him and if he found that any department or organization was not doing its job then action would be taken.

If thats whats happening then fine.. Level and fair.. Clear and transparent.
If its just pre negotiation on Tea money.. And allowing some to operate untouched but other not.. Then its all just bullshit and me first bribery..
I personally find 2 a little too early.. But thats my preference.. Not the end of the world.

Don't worry about negative comments - you're...
a). entitled to an opinion just as much as anyone else.
b). allowed to be different.
c). not in the building game, so don't get too "constructive" on us
Failing the above, sod what the fishwives think

I have no problem either way but would just like consistency so I can plan my evening, hate going out at 10 then finding the bars are being shut at 2am, before you say it, yes it is the rules but just wish they would be consistent in either ingnoring them or enforcing them

I would have to agree with Talbotman
Why on earth would you want to waste most of the daylight hours nursing a hangover on holiday
holidays are for a limited time only. If i was an expat living there then maybe I would have a gripe. but surely at 3am in the morning there couldn't be something else better to do ?
can't wait to see some of you guys for real at MTB or Hells Bells during Easter.
catch you later

The problem is I never have a hangover and the same things you like to do at 3am can also be done at 6am in my opinion

If you never have a hangover - Good for you!
but i suppose it would depend on what you are drinking. mine's a whiskey!
If you can do the samething at 6am then also good job.
I just like having more time for fun. but each to his or her own.
but generally to this post I would say we have to respect the law of the land. We also have to respect the country's culture, custom and religion. Unless of course you believe Patong was created only for you to drink and have fun with BGs (or whatever ) then complain till the cows come home. (actually I am not this serious guys, just some thoughts)
maybe they could extend the hours on Friday and Saturdays.
Also if the extra money spent by tourists in the wee hours finds its way back into the economy then it might be a good idea for special tourists area laws. but who ever said officials do the wise thing.
have fun my friends.
may the force be with you not against you!

Sound fair enough. They know they are between a rock and a hard place.
No chance of getting the laws updated while there isn't a proper fed gov.
I still think the bars and clubs were pushing it too far. Everyone seemed happy enough with closing around 3am.
