Singha beer now only 5%!!

Singha beer used to be 6% alcohol and has quietly reduced it to 5%. I read that it had something to do with alcohol taxes (I don't know if that is the reason), but I have to say that it just doesn't taste as good anymore. Used to have a heavy-ish malty or barley taste but now it is thin and watery, not at all the same in my opinion. I didn't think 1% would make such a difference!!

I also wonder how it will affect domestic sales, I know most Thais drink Leo or Chang but surely reducing the alcohol level doesn't seem like a brilliant strategy.

Anyone else notice the change in taste or is it just me??

Cheers, Robaht

Even more reason not to drink it

Thats a invariable nasty hangover after a heavy session on it ... lots of better beers for my taste.

I know Singha had 5% in their export version of the beer for a long time, maybe they decided it for domestic market aswell to simplyfy production?

I dont drink Singha much so I cant comment on the taste.

Seems Singa gets pretty poor reviews from most people.. An ice cold one goes down fine to me.. Not my favourite beer int he world.. And for some reason I can seem to stomach drinking enough beer to get drunk any more, but icy cold it paletable enough for me.

I hadnt noticed any taste difference tho..

I was wondering why I wasn't as drunk as usual last trip! (Well apart from the night with the 12 long islands of course, before anyone who saw me says anything!)

I drink it, but then I drink any beer. Well apart from the massivly over priced Stella in los! I seemed to get most pissed on Asahi (or however you spell it!) in Cambodia. Maybe because it was very very cheap! Or the fact i had bought a bottle of whisky to use as a chaser!

Poof!

Never be a real man with an attitude like that! Around my way we quickly move on from Mad Dog 20/20 to Tennents Super at about the age of 14. None of this poncy Alcho-pops that you were brought up on!

Started to find the singha had a metallic taste towards the end of the trip. Ended up drinking Tiger pretty much for the last week.

Cool Singha Lite redux

After November last year Singha withdrew their totally sh1t Lite beer.

They had off loaded dozens of truck loads of it to the Chiang Mai Inter Hash and it was so vile that most people went to supermarkets and bought their own supplies of something better.

Just think - take two Singha Lite and boil them down into the new Singha Sh1te.

Nothing goes to waste with Singha. They are probably re brewing the stuff they could not even sell to the Thais.

I never minded the Singha myself. I do like the Chang as well.
Over here in the states awhile ago the had Singha Gold. Then that got lost somewhere with the Singha light. Is that the same thing?

Never really cared for the light. If I was to drink a light beer iin LOS in was the Sam Miggy Light.

The first time I visited, I found myself crawling home on a regular basis after a night of Singha. Shitefaced! Strong beer. Is Budweiser even 4%? I love coming in from a day at the beach and slugging down a half a can of ice cold Singha first gulp.

Out at night I can't be hitting the head every 15 minutes and have switched my poison to SangSom and coke. Gotta stay native. Besides that 5 baht per trip adds up.

I'm a wineo (Pinot) at heart but never drink it in LOS. Poor selection. Too hot.

When I first met Nicke at the Mai Thai I said I'm Pinot. He said Pee Not. No I said Pinot (Pee No) like the wine Pinot Noir? He didn't know what I was talking about. In America, Pinot Noir is burgundy. To Americans burgundy is something bums drink, cheap shit.

Cheers.

Phuket has had some great memories for me and it has a wicked culture. However the Thai Government think Thailand has a monopoly on tourists who want girls and fun. They are wrong. This is not an advert to leave Pguket as it is a great place. However I live on the isla de margarita in the caribbean. 24 beers cost $4. A tank of fuel costs $1. They have had 4 miss worlds in the last 20 years. my penthouse costs me $25000. Yes Chavez is the leade. Long liuve communism. Get lost bar closures. Here bars shut at 4am. Charlie costs $2 a bag.

Let us know the next time you are over Pinot. We can introduce you to the Fine Wines of Thailand. We only really drink it when it's dark, so we think it could be red!

Singha lite is only 3.5% alcohol ... I've never tried it but that doesn't sound good....

Maybe Singha lite is off the market? I think it is interesting that the Boon Rawd brewery still lists it as one of their products, but it also says that Singha is still 6%... guess somebody forgot to update the web site.

Boon Rawd Brewery Company Limited

Has anyone ever tried Thai beer? (see the link) I must admit I've never looked for it (in the 7/11's) but don't recall seeing it.

Singha lite is still available, as I used to start on that before moving on to stronger stuff before the end of the night!

I know that alot of the bar owners perfer to drink light beers as 350 days a year on normal/strong beers must totally fcuk you up. So the light cuts the units consumed down.

No, never even seen Thai Beer. But have had Leo and the one at the bottom, but not in LOS.

I did a little google searching but still can't seem to find any hard news that Singha dropped to 5% -- I find it odd that it isn't mentioned somewhere. I saw an article about how Boon Rawd is charged more tax for Singha because it is a "premium brand" (at least they complain that Chang Beer pays less tax than they do), but no press releases. Well, none in English anyway. I also read something about how Singha is only a tourist beer and Boon Rawd is placing its bet on Leo since it has 25% of the domestic market.

Well, whether any of that is true, guess I'll switch over to Leo or Chang or beer Lao...

Now, do any bars in Patong serve Leo? I have never seen it in a "farang bar", but then, I've never tried to order it.
