Thumbs down Drinking Laws

Hi

Why is booze not being sold now between 2pm and 5pm, seems to be happening accros LOS.

Seven Eleven and Airports seem to have restricted their selling times.

Also dont know about Phuket but it seems that between 2am and 6am it is also getting harder to find a place that is open.

Regards

Drew

Absolutely daft!

Here in AC - Phils can drink 24 hours- no hastle, no fights, drunken bums on the street - everything is cool.

and CHEAPER!

San Mig Light - retail is 19 Peso or 14.6 Baht !!

Bottle of good quality copy vodka (Geir ; gin, rum is ~100 Peso or 80 Baht !!

Even in bars is still cheaper than LOS - so brewers in Thailand are making good killing somewhere.

Dont forget - we have a choice - loose respect and tolerance for your guest and they will go somewhere which will treat them better!!

The bars are still open en full of liquor every night.. You're right about the 7/11s though, but only those next to the highway.
Went to one last time when I drove to the airport from Patts. But it's still Thailand... wave a little extra cash and they'll keep an eye closed for you :p

It's true... Its only allowed to sell alcohol between 11 am and 2pm and then 5pm until 12 midnight. This is nuts imo. LOS is losing many of it charmes lately....

Are you talking shops here or licensed bars ??

Bars here can and do operate all day currently.. Daytime closing would not be popular with both bar owners or tourists,,

This law is not for bars but for retail only. You can even buy in retail outlets when the purchase exceeds 10 liters...

Uhuh.. read what he posted:

'Earlier tonight , pattaya police issued letters to all the bars telling them that they will now only be allowed to sell alcohol between 11 am and 2pm and then 5pm until 12 midnight.

this is the same as the law that prevents supermarkets and seven 11, s etc from selling alcohol at these times.

if this law is enforced there is not one single bar in pattaya who could survive .

this seems like a strange law as they have just recently announced that all bars can open until 2 am , but are now saying we cannot sell drink.

bye bye pattaya'

I read that and after that I give my opinion taking in consideration the content of the law. This law does not forbid bars to sell alcohol whatsoever.

Uuh.... this law regulates sales of alcohol in retail outlets only.

"Law" seems to be a malleable concept under the junta....they might just decide this law applies to bars.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if this crackdown wasn't just a temporary thing to control the upcoming Songkran insanity.

A ban on water would be more effective, rather than alcohol

It is a bit typical that those letters, stories, rumours etc are always originating from Pattaya. Most of the time they also tend to disappear quietly. My best guess is that it will happen again with this letter....
It is very apparent that in Thailand the police does not always know how to interpreted the laws, they might include more than should be in this example.

If this was a nationwide 'crackdown' we should have heard something here and for sure in Bangkok..... Strange we did not hear anything from Bangkok and Phuket yet... isn't it?

Why? I don't get it.

Normally you see country's adapt to make tourists feel more welcome i mean it is one of the biggest streams of income. The only thing i see Thailand adapting to is the western prices.

Is there any sane reason why there need to be a ban of alcohol during these times? Even though i dont think they will ever enforce these rules in Pattaya.

In Phuket it doesnt really matter since they close everything early anyways, which is bullshit too imo.

Phuket as a tourist area has later drinking places that any other resort. You can drink till daylight in some places.

The big problem with Thailands alcohol problems are that the authorities refuse to accept the fact that Thais do not drink in tourist areas at tourist prices. Most Thais will go to a bottle shop and but some cheap rotgut Lo Kow whiskey.

By the way when the 7/11s refuse to sell booze just walk along to the nearest Family Mart - they do sell it.

Yes and in general terms it closes earlier and has less obvious drinking dens.. Of course it has them, but in broad strokes Phuket is the most lax tourist zone I see..
