I think that is only partly correct. As far as I have seen it accepts both "languages" on par.
I tried entering:
color colour favor favour
All four words were spelled correctly (as per Google).
When I spell check:
colur favur
The suggestions are given both in English and American.
There may be other variations that may prove me wrong, but obviously living in the US I could not be bothered to test.
