Where to go in Phuket?

Greetings,

I am new to this forum, and before i ask my bunch of questions i want to introduce myself.
I am in my 30`s and from Germany; sure you will see that English is not one of my strong sides.

I was only twice in Thailand before and that was more the sort of a family travel trip. But now I am going from 18th December to 9th January with a friend to Phuket. We will stay in Horizon Karon Beach Resort & Spa. I hope it’s a good hotel to stay with.

My friend, late 20, is very shy and has till now no real experience with women. No, he is not gay. He was very fat more than a year ago but lost around 120 pounds. He is still not slim, but far from fat. I do not want for him in Phuket the “overkill”, but the best trip ever.

I know that I have to take care that he is not falling in “love”, but I would like him to lose his “shyness” (whatever the right word is). Back home he shall be more confident.

Now my questions:

What are interesting places in Phuket. Diving, Coocing (I hate it, he would like it) Discos, Beach, any cool things what we should try and see there.

For what shall I look?

What are the fair prices for entertainment?

Any ideas where to go at X-mass and new year?

I hope some of you can give me advice.

This is not a joke post.

Thank you,

Peter

Welcome to the board Peter. First and foremost all the questions you have asked you can find by reading through the board archives….yea it takes a little time, but it is well worth it. Now your “friend”…well if there is a cure for shyness then I’m sure he will be tickled pink by the attention he gets going out to the bars. There is a small bar area in Karon by the beach…. but you will want to venture to Patong a few times and let you hair down. Have a great trip.

welcome to the board. Don't worry about your friend as the girls won't allow him to be shy. Once in Phuket you will find people who will tell you of the good places to go.

Hi Peter1973,

even if my username should say, I'm not the expert for phuket or thailand at all. I've been in Thailand/phuket only two times. Each time only a few days. my last trip was end of November this year and but I'm still excited and still "have got the Blues", that I'm not there anymore.

When meeting the girls (and you MUST meet them, whatever your goal is on your trip), I would propose: Be relaxed, smile, make jokes, order ladies drinks to your favorites, be charming and you will have the greatest time in life. Treat them as ladies, not as *****s, they are just too wonderful!!!!!!!
Prices: Karon is cheaper then Patong. 300 Bath Bar Fine & 1000 Bath Long Time in Karon. But girls in Patong seems go be prettier. I've paid in Patong 500 Bar Fine and 1500 Long Time (some of you guys would say: too much at all and you are somehow right. But my selected girl was a kingdom worth I would give her all my money!!) (Price example "Rock Hard a gogo" a very good looking, busty girl wanted 600 Barfine, 2000 ST (later 1500) in a Hotel nearbier (no clue, what the hotel costs))

Am I able to recommend a bar/place in Paton or in Karon? No, there are too many and I believe, changing to fast. My preferred place was Cobra Bar, corner Soi Easy/Soi Bangla in Patong, having wonderful ladies there!

There is as well the problem: How to avoid that you will not fall in love with one of the ladies? I don't know and why should I want to avoid that? this is a part of having a great time there!
I've found one idea in internet: spent maximum 2-3 days with the same lady and take then another one. (By the way: the first lady I've found, I've spent one night because she didn't convince me; the second one I've spent 3 days, I won't miss).

The first time that I was in Thailand I was a few days in Patong and a few days in Phi Phi Islands. Both of these places are like heaven on paradise. Each of them in a different way. Phi Phi Island has got a beautiful landscape and wonderful beaches. I'm not sure, but it should be possible to have a day trip from Phuket City to Phi Phi Island. Do this!! Or alternatively: If you are still flexible with your booking: why don't you spend some days at PhiPhi?

This year I had a day trip to Phang Nga. I was picked up at 7 in the morning and was back at 4 pm. This bus trip took about 1 hour. We were shipped into the boat (sit in the very front or in the back. If you sit in the middle, you'll get wet!). We were shipped to james bond island, had a short stay there. then we've been shipped to the Sea Gipsy island for lunch. Then we were brought back. Something that wasn't mentioned when booking: They brought us to a Cashew store first and then to a gem factory. I didn't liked both and was quite upset.
This trip cost 850 Bath + 200 Bath extra-???. Option for this trip was being shipped around at James Bond island by sea canoes (1 driver + 2 passengers per canoe). I don't like that, but you probably like that? nevertheless: Being at Phang nga and the Sea gipsy island, was to short for me, the Cashew and Gem Store was sheating on customers, but I would not miss the trip to phang nga and Gipsy Island. I can recommend to do that, too.

Something concerning the traffic. Differently to Germany, they do not drive on the right, but on the left side. So: be aware to look to the right, when crossing the street. In case you should not have problemes with this "wrong traffic": I've rented as well for some days a motorcycle/scooter (200 Bath a day at Karon, Ice Family) and I've enjoyed it much. 1st it makes you flexible: you can go where ever you want at any time. 2nd it is cheaper then using TukTuks, 3rd it makes fun driving around in this atmosphere. Dangerous? I would say: No. Thai drivers are aware of you. Some of them drove with their cars 30-50 km/h behind me for miles until they have been able to pass me. This would never be possible in Germany. Something you should know: You can't get any insurance in case of accidence.

Then: have a massage every day! I've preferred oil massages (about 300). they are great. Some of the masseurs gives you additional service on request (500-700-1000 Bath extra). Apparently I did not try a "Soapy massage". Next time I would try this.

Have a lot of fun!!!

Stefan

Hi Stefan & Peter

Welcome to the forum.

Nice post on your experiences Stefan, but can I just pick you up on one thing?
Driving in Phuket is not safe, especially with you both coming from a country that drives on the right. Thai drivers are, IMO, some of the worst in the world and will do the most stupid manoeuvres you can imagine. Don't expect signalling, but expect drivers to pull out in front of you or change lanes without signalling at any time. Be very aware if you drive for the first time in LOS.

This advice is for your friend, but its also the same for everyone.
If he is bigger than average, he will lose more liquid in the heat, make sure he has a bottle of water with him every time he goes out, it is also a good excuse to drink more beer!
Tell him not to pull back when the girls in the bars of Patong come over to him and rub his belly, it is good luck for them, it is like touching the Buddha's belly.
Keep a smile on your face, it goes a long way.

Above all else, have a great time!!

If you are going to give advice like this, please make sure it is at least somewhat accurate.
The loss of liquid by perspiration is NOT properly replenished by the consumption of water. A lot of minerals are lost as well and if you want to do it right the replenishment should include electrolytes.
Quote:
Technically, electrolytes are minerals (magnesium, potassium, sodium, and calcium) that are lost through perspiration or other forms of dehydration, particularly in heat stress situations. Under ideal conditions, electrolytes flow through muscle cells to keep them functioning normally. Perspiration depletes cells of fluids and weakens the muscle tissue.
Aside from the sugar content most sports drinks do a great job, some do, however, lack potassium.
As for the beer ... we (almost) all take pleasure in consuming that and in smaller amounts it actually may be better than water alone.

Thank you for your correction.
However, I would never have suggested that anyone I dont know the medical history of consume a sugary sports drink.
As we were told that Peters friend is on the large side, he may well be diabetic for all I/we/you know!

And of course, drinking water during the day is only to supplement the diet that I am sure will normally be eaten/drunk.

I do speak from experience, as I have been dehydrated on more than one occasion (yes I was stupid), and I have always been told by Doctors, to drink plenty of fluids in warm climates.

Maybe I should have said, take a bottle of drink with you rather than water, choose what you want, water, orange or your favorite fizzy.
That perhaps is the better suggestion.

I don't think I recommended sugar ... besides for a diabetic beer is just as bad. All I recommended is an electrolyte replacement. I too have a bit of experience in heat related illnesses. Not from a medical stand point, but I have been part of developing electronic equipment specifically to monitor body core temperatures of workers in occupational settings and I have close ties with one the two biggest producers of electrolyte replacement drinks. Even in occupational settings were heat related illnesses are common, education is still far behind the problem.

It wasn't my intend to jump on you, BTW!

g'day to both new boys,
pet73 asked which discos or pubs to go to. just start at one end of bangla road and have a drink at every bar you can see and stay at the one you like, if you reach the other end of bangla you probably wont be in any condition to do much else, so go and sleep, wake the next day and start again. as for the driving in phuket, it is hard enough trying to walk across the ride without being killed let alone driving on those roads. pay a scooter taxi guy to drive you around, much cheaper and safer, well as safe can be!
cheers boys

Peter, allow me to practice my crappy Deutsch with you my friend. I took three years of German back in my university days, but I have forgotten all of it. I'm sure it's still in my brain somewhere. If you don't come to Mai Tai Bar and drink beer with me, I will be very disappointed.
