Bangla... Smell??
I really think this needs to be discussed in a new thread and something should be done. Why does Bangla have to smell so bad??? It is really affecting the experience of a lot of people. I just had a group of friends (12) that stayed in Soi san sabai and the just would not stop going on about the rubbish and smell. These guys are not a bad bunch but they swear they will never come back because of how bad the place smells and how dirty it all is. So many people mention it now.
I really think it is going to have a major effect or repeat visits and referrals. Why let the rubbish pile up all night and why not invest in some venting systems to get the smell out of the road? I can put up with it but by world standards it is just disgusting!

too many tourist producing too much crap would be the main problem.if your mates don't come back at least they will be helping the problem just a little.

HAHAHAHAHAHA, always great responses from you Steve. You seem to get to the root of the problem!
Maybe it's got something to do with my signature? I've noticed it always seems to be worst around Soi Seadragon

oh how i miss the nightly ritual of covering the drains with wet newspapers or sacks to try to keep the stink down.
brings a tear to my eye.
literally when in patongpong.

Good Post
I must admit myself Steve that is was a good post and sure less people would help the problem but I was thinking of a solution that would kill the smell and not the local economy. And I really think it has got worse. On the rubbish front... why not have a crew of Garbo’s that remove the rubbish every half hour or so. Would only cost each bar about 10 Baht a night to get this done.

Solution! Hold it in!
Ok read the old thread on this... The solution is to hold it in during the Peak season and then wait for the rain!

Ive sat at a bar on quite a few occasions and couldn't smell the Bangla pong due to the Farang sitting next to stinking more.
Its just something you end up getting used to when in Bangla. If you don't/can't then its prob best to head out of the tropics.

The trash is removed quickly these days. Never piled up like in the past, a way to be safe from bombs I guess.
But the drain can be stinking on some parts of Bangla. I dont mind to much as I just walk past it in one second.

I was surprised that some of the drains in Lala land smelled the same. Or was the smell of Bangla still in my nose, or was it just Dingo's farting?

Farting!
Awesome... Farting. Good subject. Is it just my experience or do Thai girls love or hate farting? The ones I have known have either though it is the most disgusting thing on earth to do in public or wet their pants with laughter! Never met anyone in between.

To me it is the smell of money. The higher the risk of H2S (or any other gas) exposure .... the more money I make.

Having much rain this past September on my visit to Patong now seems like a blessing from what I have read here. I really did not notice any smell except for maybe when right next to the drains.
Hopefully the water throwing of Songkran will have the same positive effect on things.

Its all in the timing
I think after a while you get used to it.
I actually try not to walk over the drains and you actually get into the habit of just holding your breath if you have to step over one; it is all in the timing.
Some bits might no smell nice but you have to just keep looking at the beautiful women.
Regards
Drew

Really?!
I dunno, i seem to always notice some huge piles of trash at the roadside - i do see the rubbish truck fairly regularly but they need to do it at least daily....or the bar owners need to take their trash out in time.

Garbage truck pulls down Bangla Road every evening around 3am. Obviously they can't keep pulling down the street every couple of hours but it would be nice if we could have a better area to dump our garbage.
Unfortunately Patong is not set up for it!

Discussing it here will make no difference whatsoever. If you want any chance of action you need to write to the Mayor/Deputy Mayor/Phuket Gazette.
Anyway, the pong is all part of the "atmosphere".

I often see the garbage truck early evenings and then again late night, when bars close we carry out the trash. So in the morning the night's trash is already gone. It used to be a lot worse, but since they stepped up security they clean alot more.

ideally it should go thru just before the road closes at 6pm - bar owners could arrange for their trash to be taken out by then and that will leave Bangla Road clear of rubbish when most tourists are about?
or is that too obvious 555

Decomposion
The smell in the drains is really from all the decomposing bodies of tourists who complain and are "killed in accidents" on the beach or in arguments with Tuk Tuks.We don't want adverse publicity in Patong so we have a disposal option.
