What music do you like? (night life)
hi all...
Cause i read a lot of music items here, maybe we can start a topic about music?
night life is also music...if you like it or not.
Well.. for me it seems patong is like a boom boom ball all over. hard feeling pounding beats in every nerve you've got. but i assume there are also other alternative music and live bands aswell??
I don't mean the AC/DC, iron maiden and other regular rockmusic scene. I think they are there also..
But i mean the more other pop/rockscene like:
-muze
-smashing pumpkins
-Billy Joel (why not)
-nick cave
-Steve RV (blues)
-the eagles,
-the doors
-the pixies
-... well you what i mean by now...
btw...any tragically hip fans out there??
i suppose..music is like a drug... if you're in to it... nothing else mathers...
even a stuning BG don't compare... she's only wallpaper at that time.
(might be a shining paper but still on a wall)
ok..pump up the volume
i'm open minded about music, but be aware....i'm a musician...don't push it...

Got to admit it's getting better (a little better, all the time)
Over the years the bands playing in Patong have been drawn from a small gene pool of the usual suspects, hence the similarity of the sets played in many bars. (Hotel Cal, Zombie, Holiday, Sweet Child O Mine, The Lemon Tree, etc) with notable exceptions of people really trying to change this situation.
Rock City have to be commended on building a great (albeit genre specific) venue with top class musicians and a show too. Sadly the now defunct Saxophone learned to their cost that a holiday town like Patong cannot quite yet support a full on Jazz venue. Jazz venues the world over need a resident population of hundreds of thousands to succeed. Their place in Bangkok however is still the grand daddy of live venues in the capital.
Niel and the boys at Scruffy's play the most diverse and probably most left field set with some stunning arrangements that should float your boat. (Stereophonics, Radiohead and pop classics).
Fiinnegan's Wake on the beach road have a fabulous all girl acoustic band at the moment who are also really freshening things up arrangement wise.
Above Tiger complex, turn left before the disco you'll find one of Thailand's most respected guitar players and teacher to the stars Khun Woody playing some of the finest Blues and Reggae in Thailand with a shit hot band. Understated, groovy and cool as ****. The place is typically empty though and occasionally Woody has to give in to the metal heads and play their requests. It's a shame more people do not support this place.
There is also a new venue going to open at the corner of Bangla where the current Club 53 is, below Rock Hard. They will also be trying something new for live music in Patong, including a brass section and no lyrics or sheet music on stage and a band that rehearses! The music will be a real alternative and definitely more up your street. I have an interest in the venue so I'll keep it to that for the moment.

As a fan of electronic music it seem that the last year or so phuket has really grown up and started to develop a scene.. Samuis had one for years, so about time.

I agree! Great place. Maybe they should advertise or something. Some times it's completely empy! I talked to him in April and he told that he's releasing a blues album later this year. I hope it's out when I come in october.
What's wrong with metal heads? I like both blues and metal and enjoy listening to both. The other guitar player is an amazing metal guitarist. Best of both worlds! But I hate those drunken aussies coming there and the only thing they wanna hear is Blur and Oasis over and over again!
Great info Jack_Wow!

Hi nothing wrong with metal heads but they are well taken care of elsewhere, occasionally Woody will be steaming through a great blues and reggae set and then the metal heads arrive and just want to hear 'Soldier of fortune' again and again, kinda ruins it sometimes.

Sorry, but I think most of the music in Phuket/BKK etc. is lacking. I hear the same stuff everywhere. Some of the live bands are ok but others just butcher songs. How bout some contemporary, modern stuff from the 90s n after. How bout something from 2008 instead of 1978????

The good 2008 stuff is just remakes of 1978 anyway
I would love to hear Lily Allen at night, preferably in my bed, but seriously I would love to see them dancing to "its not fair", and how they would go about lieing in the wet spot.

Sorry Goose, I wish I could find places anymore that played tunes from 1978! I generally have a very wide range of music I like but I can't stand rap, trance, etc. Good live music is best and I even enjoy Thai music but the other stuff can ruin a night for me....
