Safe at night?
Guys, a little tale of stupidity from someone who should know a lot better. I felt completely safe walking the streets of Patong, apart from this one incident. Lulled into a false sense of security I guess.
On my last night in Patong I thought it would be a nice romantic gesture to take the bg I had been with for the whole of my stay, a little cutie from Sharkey's Bar (there's something about those gingham skirts!!), for a moonlit stroll on the beach. Hand in hand we walked in the surf, kissing under the stars. The beach was deserted as no one seems to want to walk there after the big wave and it was only by chance that I noticed three guys come on to the beach, one walked toward us while the other two hung back. Immediately I sensed we were in trouble so I handed the girl my shoes and told her to move as I thought I was going to have to fight. The guy got to within 10 feet or so and I squared up, thinking 'oh shit, knife in the ribs time'. Luckily for me the girl had called to some women on the prom selling water and I think it was only the combination of this together with my size and the fact that the other two guys were someway off that prevented me from getting a 'shoeing' or worse.
The moral of the tale guys is Patong is a fantastic place and while in crowds very safe but don't leave your comman sense at home like I did!! Has anyone else had similar experiences?

You wouldn't catch me walking along a deserted beach at night anywhere. Patong Beach is notorious for this type of violence at night, avoid it.

Must have balls that clang not to try and peg it back to where there was more people if they were close enough your girl could call to em. Shame though they had to go spoil a good night but at least you came away without a scratch.

Hava a bit different story. Two weeks ago I was playing connect 4, and playing for shooters. The last ting I remember was my 4th shooter and x number of beers. Shouldn't be a problem, since I have been drinking alkohol for 20 years, and this shouldn't be to much for me. The next thing I remember is waekeing up in my bed, and discovering that I must have puked last night. My thai girlfriend then tells me I was drunk, and she became angry at me because I only wanted to play game, so she had left the bar at around 1.30 in the night (she is hot temperd). She had gone home to ouer house to sleep, and heard me come home, she think between 4 - 6. After a while when I diddn't come upstairs to the bedroom, she whent downstairs and found me passed out in the bathroom.
I do not remember anything after ca 12.30 from the day before, my cloths are a bit dirty, and I have spent 3700 of the 5700 bath I took with me. Still have my keys and mobile(new, expensiv). Next night I go back to the bar, (I am a regular), everybody coments that I was drunk the day before, but I had payed the bill, and refused to be taken home, and "walked" up Bangla road. I was verry happy that I had behaved ok. And didn't ask to menny questions (my hot temperd girlfriend was with me).
Then around 3 at night, and we sit at a street kitchen opposite Tay Pan, and a girl I think I have never before seen, Say "Oh tonight you are not drunk". I dont understand anything, and my (hot temperd) girlfiriend talk a little bit with the girl. (The girl walks on, probebly from hearing my girlfriends tone of voice to me.) Aperently I was drunk and had puked in or outside Tiger, and the girl had helped in getting me home.
So I was drunk, unabele to take care of myself and still strangers got me home without stealing my valubels!
(And it could not have been easy, not walking distance, and maybe only a note in my pocet telling the name of the street (but no number, and not that I live in a sidestreet to it)
Looking back, I think this could have gone realy bad, and that I must have been realy lucky. Hope I one day get to thank the girl.

I am actually starting to get worried.. The nights when I have a memory of coming home (riding my bike , finding the damn thing, etc) are getting to be a distinct minority..
I know last friday I was in superstars and didnt get home (so my GF tells) me till 7 last memory was at about 4 in Tums.. She says I was in fine spirits, came home, had a swim, cooked some breaker (made a hellish mess) and then passed out.. but the drinking till memory loss and then having yourself wander round on autopilot cant be good news.. I blame the vodka lippos...

haha, christ, i can't believe she let you in a pool...oh man, i think next to handling explosives, swimming has to be the worst things you can do while comepletely smashed....good to hear you didn't drown, or blow anything up...
we should form some sort of drunkards group that just travels around, while completely smashed mind you, and hopefully nobody messes with us...of course if none of us remember anything, it could be quite a problem...forget that, so about those vodka lippos you were talking about!

I put far more concern in the riding motorbike bit.. I can do a lot on autopilot but reaction times must be shot to hell.. Taking the piss a bit..

Avoid the section of road between Surin Beach and Kamala at night when on a motorbike - drunk or otherwise. I had TWO friends forced off the road and mugged there!

The same thing happened to me and my lady in Feb this year. But it was on the road from Patong to Kamala. Two thaiguys sneak up behind my motorbike and grab the bag from my lady. We hit the ground with the bike. I was hurt in my right leg and arm. My lady broke the arm. I think we are lucky, if we had drive little faster with the bike, we could be dead both of us. Thai-police know about this mafia, but they dont do anything

What's the story with drunk driving do they breath test because I've never seen it and what would happen if you were caught.

Agree totally with stevem,
First time i went to patong, a friend and i decided to go for a walk down beach road after a big drinking session , but we though for a change we would walk down along the beach..... well after about a minute on the sand, we saw some pretty freakish stuff going on and got back on the road quick smart . Moral of this story is patong beach is beautifull during the day, but a place definitley to stay away from late at night!!!

i was in martini's in cambodia last night and met an australian guy. now martini's is a bit out of the way, and this guy asked me where we were. i told him to go home and take care of himself. cambodia is no place to be in that type of shape.
livinlos,
im guilty as charged with driving my motorbike bombed out of my mind. i even drive it back from karon some nights. i really have to stop

As said before just avoid the beaches in the night. Especially if you`re drunk.
But i would say in generally LOS is very safe.

This remembers me to Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro. Never go to the beach after dark, except on New Year.
Hope Patong beach is the only one. Had never problems on Kata Noi beach, walking around with my teelak and sitting on the beach chairs in the night.

I be from even more up there - Conwy area.
Where do you fly from when you go to LOS? I've had difficulty getting a flight from Manchester for a reasonable price. Phuket at Christmas/New year seems really expensive, BKK is cheaper.
