Molly Malones Irish Pub

I've just seen the adds in Phuket Gazette for recruiting a pub manager, chef, waiters, and accountant- looks like they are opening up again.

I met one of the old barstaff who now works in the Banthai who told me she had been interviewed for a Hard Rock Cafe job (to be built were Molly's was)- looks like that's fallen through.

Molly's used to be a regular breakfast haunt for me. That breakfast platter with as much coffee as I could drink to clear the cobwebs was fantastic and cheap. Also a good place to get out of the Bangla scene for a night with a few mates if you don't want be being pulled left and right by the BG's IMHO.

I think (Bit drunk, probably) I even saw Stan (The Germans bombed our chippy) Boardman there many moons ago. Not that I travel to the LOS to watch old Liverpudlian comedians, he just happened to be there at the time.

If they do get Mollys up and running again I will be popping down for the pork sausages alone. (No wisecracks please!!!) Thanks for the update Drew.

The old head chef is a connection of mine.. Now working at Mangosteen resort I believe but has done the rounds since the tsunami..

His tale of the morning of the 26th is one of those amazing ones.. floating up a drainpipe behind the building with the staff all clinging to him etc..

We must have been out at the same time, I was in Molly's the night Stan Boardman was there, the band that was playing were the "Red Hot Potatoes" who had been backing group for Van the Man when he played Bangkok.

I knew I'd seen you somewhere before Faulty!!! Yes, that was the night. I was the velly hansum man chatting to an Aussie couple and some NZ lads for most of it and we had a good banter going. I remember a gentle stroll along the beach (when it was safe to do so and having one of those special sunbed BJ's) on my way back to my hotel. Happy memories. Might be able to do it again if they get Mollys back up and running!

Rene the German Chef is also a friend of mine.

When the Tsunami hit on the 26th I was in the Banthai next to Mollys and Macdonalds and I ended up climbing over the wall at the back of the Hotel to escape.

I'm staggering around and who should be there but Rene, telling me his car was washed away and the Irish Bars were lost and how he got a call on the morning asking if he had seen the sea go out- so we end up standing wondering which way to run as the reports of another big one coming in abound and people are fleeing in all directions.

Nice guy. I remember one night we are shooting the shi* and talking about how Thai's view Farangs and the fact that there are prices for the same goods for Thais and then prices for Farangs (obviously being higher as we are loaded with cash).

Being German he's quite direct, so he tells me how when he was trying to sell his motorbike (nice bike as well) he put a sign in the road with 2 sides to it. One said 1,000,000 Baht the other side 500,000 baht.

So he's sitting there with this For Sale Sign on His Bike for 500,000 Baht and its a nice bike. So all these Thais keep stopping to ask to buy it.

He then turns the sign round and shows them the 1,000,000 Baht For Sale Sign.

Perplexed they ask why they can't buy the Bike for 500,000 Baht.

''You do not understand' he says. '' This is the Farang price. If Thai want to buy bike- must pay double''

I think this was his source of entertainment, not having satellite TV.

Anyway good luck to him. I'll catch up with him in December.

Regards

Drew

Well the German guy I know (who was the Mollys head Chef at the time for certain) is called Gert but the sense of humour sounds identical so maybe its a case of multiple names.. Keeps big Rottwielers (friendly soppy things) lived out here a long time..

Thinking about it its deffo Gert / Gerd as I have his email in my MSN Chat and that fits..

Rene Gert

Same Guy

Not sure about the drainpipe story though. He looked pretty dry to me when we were standing there, although mentally we all had our problems.

Well he had this phone cam vid of the wave coming.. everyone freaking and making a dash through the tunnel to the back.. Then he says they held on to the drain as waters rose floating them a fair way of the ground but the building shielding them from the surge / flow..
