carry some ID at night time
According to Stickman:-
...several new measures are to be implemented more or less immediately. The first is that during the time that bars are operating, the soi is to be closed off to all traffic including motorbikes and vendors, making it a walking street. Second and more important is that bars will have to put up signs that all customers will need to have ID on their person when entering the bars. One establishment has already experienced a bust with 8 farang being fined and the bar in question was fined, the rumour mill having it that the fine was as high as 50,000 baht. These measures are apparently to be implemented nationwide and will have to be policed by the owners as the local police can do spot checks at any time without warning.
Coolhand's tip: photocopy your passport, and laminate it. If you get blind drunk you may lose a copy, but you wont lose your real passport. No good for changing travellers cheques though, they want to see the real thing.

This is nothing new but with everything else, it is just a question of being enforced or not.
Ead always carry her ID card with her and Thais know it is required by law so they are used to always do it.
But as for tourists, many hotels require the passport or a hefty deposit, but I guess a photo copy would be fine. I dont think it will be enforced in Phuket thought.

I always have my photo ID driving license.. May now laminate a passport copy..
Can you clarify where and when this was.. Sounds much more like a T money shakedown than anything serious nationwide but ???

usually carry id
my first 3 trips to Los i carried a copy of my passport as i had read this was thai law. so not wanting any hassle i followed the rules even in phuket.
later trips i only carried the worn out passport copy in bkk, then i stopped doing that.
so maybe now make a new copy and as livinlos said laminate it and put it in the wallet.
i think in bkk they will enforce, but in patong i dont think so unless your at a disco or go to a thai club in phuket town.

A photocopy of your passport is a good idea, I always carry one and leave the real thing in the hotel. A photo driving licence would do the trick as well I guess, never thought of that, but it's a good idea to be able to prove who you are all the time I think.

I don't see why not ETV. A reduced photocopy of your passport is just as valid as a full sized photocopy.

I only carry my driverslicense, never my passport.
1 st the chance to be stopped in Phuket with the bike is more realistic, then to be asked for papers in a bar....Been stopped 3 times.
They ask international DL, but I only carry an official Belgian. When they something aboutnot being "international", I just say "Oh it is, look there is written "drivers-license in English (it does, among other languages!)As they hesitate, they always let me go!
I always have a Belgian Id, but that I always have to give to the bike-rental C°.

i have I.D drivers license , if you go on the RAC web site you can down load the form, it is only £11 for two copies(they also require photos)but for the small cost it has to be worth it.

Always carry ID, usually my driving licence. If u have a m bike u are likely to be stopped 2-3 times per week
Also life is very unpredictable never think something here cannot happen to you & if u end up at the cop shop or talking to them for whatever reason they will want some ID

Passport for ID
Another alternative to making a photocopy of your passport is to get it scanned on to computer and then print out a colour copy.I did mine and had it laminated and carry it in my wallet.Keep it on file and you can make new copies as required from any decent internet cafe.

i got stopped by the police in bkk as i came down the stairs on the pedestrian overpass at panthip plaza.
the police who spoke little english saw me smoking as i walked down the stairs they stood in front of me and pointed to a cigarette butt on the ground.
i was still smoking my cigarette i pointed at the "offending article" which was brown filtered whilst i smoke LM menthol (white filter).
the look on their faces was priceless, they smiled and waved me past.
just trying for their afternoon drink money i think.

I always carry a copy of my passport and an international driver license with me.
In 1998 i had a problem in the bars with another farang and police came. So of course the first thing they wanted to see was your passport.
I just do it like at home.
