How much do you tip?
I nevr been to Thailand so I don't know how much to tip here. While I was inthe Philippines I used to throw out about 5-10 bucks for a shag. Driver got around 10 dollars (a two hour haul).
Restaurant got my change or maybe 1 dollar.
So how mch do you tip? I am curious. I hope some of you guys aren't like those cheap charlies (and I use that term gently) who sometimes don't even give the girl money for a ride home.
One girl I know had to walk home around 5 kilometers because she got stiffed.
Just curious.

For a night with a girl I gave them 1500 B minimun but mostly 2000B coz they seemed to like me The minimum rate is 1000 B.
At restos... Well I gave about 10% but 40B minimun, one time the bill reached 3,100 and I gave 300 B tip. In bars I usually give the change. When you take tuk tuk they'll ask you for 100 B so there is no need to give a tip unless they provide you with one hell of a service

As you have posted this in the pattaya section of the forum then I will assume this is where you are heading.
Tip for the driver from Bangkok airport to pattaya - 100 baht is perfectly acceptable but this depends on wether you have a good driver or not, if I had a bad driver that drove crazy even after resquests to slow down/drive carefully, then I would consider not tipping at all.
Tip for the girls from bars - this is completely optional as the girls do not expect a tip on top of the agreed price.
Beer bar 1000 for longtime and 500 for short time is the usual agreed price.
Agogo 1,500 to 2000- longtime or or 1000 to 1,500 shortime is the usual ''average'' agreed price.
You can tip them as well but this is entirely at your discretion, if the girl had given good service and you feel happy with her then go ahead and make her happy. 100 to 200 baht would be fine but it's your money and up to you. Some guys often give the girl taxi money only as a tip- 20 - 40 baht.
In soapy massage parlours you pay up front to a cashier which can usually cost 1,500 to 2,500 on average for 90 minutes with your selection of girl, the girls sit behind a glass screen and the price varies on beauty. Most of these places have around 2-3 sections of girls and each section has a different price.
Most of these girl DO ask for a tip but it's not compulsary, I usually give 300 baht if the girl has put the effort in to give me a good time. 500 would be the absolute maximum but again...it's up to you.
Restaurants - I agreee with Latino that 10% is an accepted standard,A 300 baht meal (if you eat alone) - 30 baht would be reasonable.
However if the meal was 2,000 baht then I would not give 200 baht, Anywhere from 50 baht to 100 would be enough and I assure you most waiters/waitresses would be happy to see that much.
I myself have left tips ranging from 20 baht to 100 baht.
In pattaya there are Songtaews as the local transport system, this costs 10 baht for the majority of short journeys and 20 baht for a longer route - ie: beach rd in pattaya to Jomtien beach. There is no need to tip these guys at all, just pay the 10 or 20 baht and walk away. Do not speak to the driver before getting on, these songtaews known as ''baht buses'' travel on a set route and once you learn which is going where, you simply ''hop on'' & ring the bell when you want to ''hop off''. If you speak with the driver you may charter the bus and he will not pick up other passangers, if you do this you will pay much more but will have to agree the price first, otherwise you leave yourself open to any price the driver wants. And these guys have been known to produce baseball bats so be careful.
Don't forget it is always a good gesture to tip those working in a hotel, these staff do not earn a lot, I always give the cleaner(s) a minimum of 100/200 baht each or more, depending on how long I stay. And I give a joint tip for reception, maybe around 200 - 300 baht, depending how many staff are on.

Why do people do this, to appear generous? Just pushes up the prices for everyone in the end - I already hear girls are expecting more money nowadays.

Not at all... As I said (in my case) I gave more than the usual rate (1000B) because the girls were great in every way not just the bed part. And if you think 2K is overexaggerated, I can say that I've heard of people paying over 5K for LT... A grand here and there won't shake anyones budget I think but it'll mean alot to the girls.

What makes you think that? There are (as I said before) people that pay them more than 5K yet they didn't expect that amount when I gave them the 2K... In fact there was one that didn't want to take the money as she tried to give it back thou I insisted and she took it. I think that the amount they "expect" is settle individualy by them and varies from customer to customer, if the girl in question likes you for any given reason she'll settle for 1K or whatever you give her, if she doesn't like you then the price will go up... Am I wrong?

If someone wants to pay above the "board imposed 1000 baht premium", then why should they be put down for it. Girls who do get a generous payout, do not expect it all the time. Asking for it and fgetting it are totally different.

Just seems odd to me, Do you also tip the noodle guy 1,000 baht? The staff in Mcdonalds? The cleaner at your hotel?
Probably not, but they could sure use the money a lot more than a BG, and it would mean a whole lot more to them.

Its your money - up to you!
If I spend as much time with the people listed and they gave me as good service, then maybe. But no I don't tip at Mcd (have to be supermao to get me in there anywhere), don't think I have ever tipped noodle guy, cleaner gets all my coins at end of holiday, and that often reaches 500-600 baht.

I assume this was meant to me... To answer your question, yes actually I do tip in a way quite well. I bought a stick with chicken to one of the ladies I went with and it costed 20B, I payed with 100 B and gave the change as tip. At Mc Donalds I did the same, I always gave the change as tip and varied from 20-80 B. The cleaning lady got everything from 40-160 B everyday, well the 160 B I left for her the last day. A tuk tuk driver got 200B from me coz I thought he was very polite and humble (one time thou) so I gave him an extra 100B...
Now, why are you bringing the rest of patong into the discussion? At first I thought your argument was about the BGs wanting to ask for more money as some people gives them 2K... Now why have you changed the topic to tipping in general? Has that anything to do with the BGs wanting to raise the fee?

Depends on if the noodle guy or chick at McDonalds or the cleaner at the hotel gave you a BJ.
Apples and oranges.

i can not remmeber the last time i gave a bg 1000baht. i can also not remember the last time i even discussed money with a bg before heading to my room, so i would imagine that 1000baht would be fine. but if i spend a good evening with a girl and feel like giving her 1500-2000baht, why should i feel like im screwing the next guy. theres no set prices on these girls.
if i spend an evening with a 19-23yr old girl, and shes fun, why shouldnt i give her an "extra" 1000 baht. who cares what she does with. all i know is i gave some cute girl that has ajob i wouldnt want to do some "extra" money and there is nothign wrong with that

I think the price is cheap considering the type of job they do. Constantly having sex with every possible stranger has it's risks. A lot of girls use those few short years in the business to start their own business doing something else. Some don't have any business sense even in this job. If I want to make love to a sack of potatoes, they're a cheaper 59 cents a kilo at the shopping center.

going rate
just last night at about 2am i sat down to have some noodles and pork before heading home.... two girls sat down and joined as well. had a great conversation, paid for their noodles, and was getting ready to leave and the one girl asked if she could go with me. so i said why not. she was cute and plus we had a great conversation. then she asked how much i was going to give her. i said 1000 baht standard rate. her response was man just give me
4k the other day and i not go for less then 2500k now. i tell her up to you because i am only giving you the going rate.
yes once they get it. they think they should get it all the time
my feeling is stick with the 1000 baht nothing more nothing less. if you wish to give more when she departs. go right a head. but make sure you tell her this is a TIP above the 1000 baht. maybe even tell her why she is getting it. she will definetely tell her friends why she got it. maybe in long run for us customers we won't end up with starfishes, or the phone ringinging, or i got to go because of some b.s. emergency.
