Cobra Gold Marines
This was taken from Dave the Rave's site.
What will soon make a difference to Pats is the amount of American servicemen here for Cobra Gold. The Cobra Gold training exercise is almost finished for another year and the American servicemen will be hitting the town in Pattaya for the last third of May.
During the Cobra Gold operation no leave is granted and so the guys naturally want to party afterwards. Sometimes the presence of the American Servicemen is not appreciated by the local expats in Pattaya. However, a friend of mine is a US Marine Corps Major, and I know that they are under very strict regulations. Each member of the US Marine Corps has to sign for a book that outlines how they are to act and behave in Thailand.
The book is very detailed and gives very clear guidelines. I have met plenty of American Servicemen and I have never encountered a major problem at all.
Regards
Drew

Yes, they have been seen on Walking Street for the last couple of nights. There seems to be some confusion with unpaid bar bills, and a general misbehaviour of a lads night out, but I haven't seen any serious hassle, so far.

Just out of curiosity, why is the presence of the American Servicemen sometimes not appreciated by the local expats in Pattaya?
Is it because of their behaviour, general arrogance, because they "steal all the women", drive up prices, all of the above? Or something else.

I'm here at the moment, generally they are OK, but it's when they enter GoGos screaming and shouting, standing in the way, starting to grope the girls, climbing up on stage interrupting shows and so on that they are annoying!
Most of them are not even out to get laid they are just partying their heads off!
Actually most GoGo girls don't like them as well, they usually don't have much money and are drunk most of the time!
I for one will be glad when they are out off here!

Oh come on buy them a round of beers. Most of them have never experienced the joys of Pattaya. And lot of them have already gone through more than you will in a life time.
Like you never groped a bargirl before... When does all of what you described never happen in Pattaya. Just because they're young American soldiers all of a sudden it's not right. But if any number of Australian, europeon, canadian men do all that it's ok.

There was a thread before on this board not long ago on the same subject.
I have been pleasantly surprised personally speaking each time I've been in pattaya while cobra gold are in town, almost nothing to report.

i find it absolutely hilarious that Americans were told to get over 9/11 because it was 6 years ago just yesterday in a thread but in the 3 + years i have been a memeber of this board i have read about 20 posts asking when the US military was coming
where are suppose to get over a horrible terrorists attack but 75% of the BM's on this board cant get over the fact that a group of 19-25yr old kids that have been holed up are going to be going a little wild(like any group of young kids would) or that they might occupy your latest bf for the night
sometimes this board blows my mind how mindless and ignorant it is

to 9/11 when they're all talking about GI's misbehaving in Patts as far as
I know...

there was a thread about a girl wearing a Osama Bin Laden shirt
some people took offense to that
one BM told us Yanks that we should get over it, it has been 6 years
so i responded to this thread on how i think it is funny(actualyl ignorant to be honest) that we are told to get over 9/11 because it has been 6 years but i have been reading this mindless, whining threads about the US military for 3 1/2 years on this board

Ok I understand your irritation, nevertheless the two are unrelated imo.
I agree that its ridiculous to keep nagging about the marines, but people
do get irritated by them somehow. I've met them in Phuket and they seem
good blokes to me. Just youngsters getting on the piss and having a blast

Paul, I can get annoyed by a bunch of young marines making to much trouble.
But a bunch of Australian sailors is worse, they make those marines look like choir boys.
And worst of all are those weekend trips of guys working in Singapore and coming over to Patong with their rugby/football club, stag party or whatever.
But they are all good news for the bar owners.

that was kind of my point
that it is just a bunch of young kids coming to town, doesnt matter if in miltary or what country
and the fact we have been over this countless times

I agree with you , this subject was brought up last year by the same BM in this thread , which was 'resurrected' again from January till April !!!!.
My comment then still applies.

Just read this thread from the beginning , and apart from a few BM's being p!ssed off at the thought of the Marines arriving , there are no posts to suggest there was any trouble.

someone said to me while i was in patong that the militairy have a system whereby 3 marines are "buddied up" if one gets arrested say, for fighting or drunken behaviour, the other two are hauled up back at ship and face same disciplinairy action. the idea is that the 3 guys keep each other out of trouble. sounds a good idea....anyone else hear about that?

I have been in Pattaya during the R&R following Cobra Gold on at least six occasions, infact 2006 was one of them.
No problems whatsoever with these guys and infact depending on their pay grade (rank) most of them have to be off the streets by midnight and all except the MP's by 2am.
Some of these guys are very accomplished singers and while in the Blues Factory a couple of them really stole the show.I find that in general the atmosphere they create is of a positive party going nature with loads of smiling happy faces.
However, the place to avoid is Lucifers Disco as in there they are hanging from the rafters listening to the shitty hip hop music.

I WISH all the us sevicemen a great holiday in patts !
because i am not there !
there are loads of different views but personally i would not go within 200 miles of pattaya when cobra gold is on i have been there 2 times when they are there and i will never be there again
this is not an attack on usa because i reckon 8,000 uk troops would piss me off just the same
i just hate the wole atmosphere when they are around
its just not pattaya i was in benidorm in spain years back when the saratoga was in port had the same hassle then.
military servicemen and holidaymakers (mongerers( is not a good mix

What do you ex-pats think?
Do they hang around for 2-3weeks then piss off home in June? Does that sound about right?
