I was almost robbed
Just a reminder to all, to be cautious whilst out & about.
I boarded a baht bus with my buddy in Patts (daytime)..........we were the only 2 on it.
We sat opposite each other.
The driver stopped to pick up 5 ladies who got on.....They looked in their 50's & were dressed looking a bit scruffy.
I had 1 lady to my left & 2 on my right......My buddy had 1 either side of him.
The ladies beside me were sitting very close to me (not that I realised so much at the time)
I was asked by 1 lady sitting next to my friend, what time was it?....I told her 3pm & then proceeded to lean over & show her my watch.
As I went to lean back in my seat I felt a tug on my shorts......I immediately went for my side pocket in my shorts & felt that my money was still intact.
The lady soon realised I was on to her & she moved a few inches away.
Within 20 seconds the ladies hit the buzzer & departed the bus.
The thing I then noticed was................They did not pay the driver.
So it makes me think the driver is in cahoots with them & this is a scam commonly practised on the baht bus route in Patts.
Be careful.

Good thing you were not too mao that time Buddy. But indeed a warning to us all to be careful and not to carry too much valuables while roaming the streets.

Maybe we can have a little fun.
Is there some sort of pocket size device that we could put in our pockets that would bite the hand of the thief?

Once I got the check bin from a waitress and I was trying to turn the other way so she could not see that I was hiding my money in my shoe. The waitress started to laugh and commented that I was acting so filipino.. thats what they did as well. I guess the secrets out.

I guess there is no way to totally safeguard yourself, but here are a few things I do:
* Carry as little cash I need (i.e. 4-5000 baht for the night).
* Put the cash in more than one pocket
* Make sure that the pocket where I have the most of the cash has a button or zipper
* Use pockets in the front rather than the back, except your main front pockets tend to be easy target.
In my case the worst than can happen is that I lose 75% of a day's expenses.

The songtaew thieves are plentiful in pattaya.
Was riding one a week ago when a young couple sat next to me, the girl sat on the thai guys lap, she kept smiling at me all the time and I could definately feel wandering hands moving around down by my side.
I keep my money (the largest amounts) hidden well, usually tucked inside the small pocket in my jeans (or condom pocket as some refer to it)
I reckon if I was not as astute I would have been an easy target as something was amiss and I could tell by the guy's face he was up to no good.
One last thing, don't go thinking you are safe sitting next to farang either, plenty of potless expats here too.

Yes zee ole Baht Bus Ploy.......amazing how many farangs get stung by this one! You even hear of young kids carrying out the actual ''dip'' while their guardians engage you (the mark) in polite conversation.
They have never caught me though, I'm far too street wise for all that Jazz.

Another one to watch for is farang with a hard luck story, usually approach you on 2nd road as one of the most common areas they try it on.
The story will usually consist of ' barfined a lady last night, woke up to find she robbed me, took all my money, phone, passport' etc..
It isn't help finding the number for the british embassy etc..that they are after, just wether or not you can loan hard cash.
I have been appraoched I think about 5 times to date, all of them were english guys loooking for a ''fellow brit'', 2 of them walked straight up to me after visiting the Siam bank ATM, obviously watching me draw out cash 1st.
Believe nothing in pattaya !

These 2 are me. I carry just what i think i will need (perhaps a few 100 baht more than my day/night budget, just incase)
And i always split the money into 2 pockets so if it does happen to me then i know i have lost about 50% of my budget, worse case scenario.

I had this happen in Frankfurt. A scottish guy 'down on his luck', wanted help trying to get home, lost his passport. All i said was "Here is the number of the brish embassy. Ring them and see if they can help." IMHO it's a good idea to keep this number because you never know when an emergency will crop up (aressted, hospitalised etc) and if you're lucky you might get some help.
However the dude wanted cash which he was politely told to "Get bent!"
