Up-to-date BM advice on accom and must-see mongering places

Just booked a 600 euro roundtrip Paris-BKK for Oct 2007 and thought I'd have 1 week Patts and 2 weeks Patong. First trip to Patts so I would like UP-TO-DATE accommodation, getting around, must-go-to bars etc. This is a 100% mongering trip (OK maybe one day fishing....).

Would really appreciate your input guys as the BM info on Patong is excellent.

Not interested in seeing everything - just the best and, if poss, walking distance, as I am used to Valhalla as a base in Pating.....

Cheers

Secrets Hotel is attached to Secrets Bar, on a small side street off of Walking Street. Talbotman, Thailearner, and a few others have stayed there and enjoyed it. I spent a lot of time there on my last trip and IJ and Nelson1 have spent time there also. No pool but very close to beach (100 meters) and I think they have agreement to use another hotel's pool. Ladies are nice, bar is air conditioned and has a good restaurant serving breakfast to late dinner. Rooms are reasonably priced. Acess to hotel can be from street or from Secrets Bar.

IJ, Nelsonone, and I (and others) all stay at Areca, short motorbike taxi or baht bus ride from Walking Street. 2 long blocks from beach but very good value and there are some beer bars, 1 good go go, and Lolitas nearby.

IJ is in Pattaya right now so read his trip report.

Not too far to walk if it is cool though. Walked from Areca to Secrets twice while I was there.

Hi capdagde. I recommend Areca lodge. I really enjoyed it. It costs a bit more but it's well worth it IMHO. I walked from Areca to Walking Street down the beach road several times. Not that far really, but if you don't want to walk the baht bus is extremely easy to catch anytime and it's only 10 Baht. Worth it if you ask me because Areca is nice. It has big rooms, a couple of nice big tropical pools, a good restaurant that includes free breakfast buffets, an in room safe, a large refrigerator, a balcony, an elevator(lift), and Internet service by the lobby,..... not free but cheap. The main thing is that it's quiet there, I could sleep. I was on the first floor at Secrets and the noise was a real problem right up to sunrise. If you stay at Secrets at least get a higher floor, but remember, there is no elevator. For me that can get old fast. Oh, and by the way, there are at least 3 go-go bars, also Lolitas BJ bar and Hell Club right near Areca, not to mention several beer bars. Soy 8 is not far away either.

For Secrets, do the Superior as it has a king bed if they have any left. Secrtes does not have an elevator so up to you what floor you want to stay on.

Areca has 2 wings, Areca in the front and Corona in the back. Areca has the gym, restaurant and registration desk. One pool is partly surrounded by Areca wins so in shade part of the day and will be cooler. Other pool is behind Corona wing and in full sun. Do a deluxe room as they all have private safes.

I would probably do Secrets first while you settle in and want to go out have fun, then switch to Areca and explore other areas of Pattaya.

I feel a little claustrophobic in small rooms, so that's why I stayed at Areca. They have good water pressure and a regular bath/shower.

If you want to save money then stay at Secrets. They are smack in the heart of Walking Street area. Personally I couldn't quite get the AC to feel comfortable to me while staying there though. I left ahead of my scheduled reservation mostly due to the noise of the first floor.

I figure if I'm going to spend money on a holiday I want to enjoy my comforts while I'm there.

Pattaya

If you stay at the Areca hotel and don't like to walk too much but want to get to Walking Street, just walk up to Soi Boukao and catch a baht bus. They usually go down to Second Road, right near the start of Walking Street. Cost: 10 baht.

Secrets can be good, too. You can't get much closer to the action than that.

Stayed in Secrets once, on the 1st floor. No problems with noise and I liked the room just fine. Haven't stayed there again because they never have a room available at the sort of short notice I can give them.

Haven't stayed at Areca because of the persistent rumours that they are going to start charging a joiner fee. Great reports always from those who have stayed there, and if the rumour turns out to have no basis in fact then I will give it a try soon.

I hear good things about Sandy Spring and may try that on my next trip. Any info from anyone who has stayed there would be good.

Hi Andy, you might want to have a look at post #19 in this thread where Talbotman gives his run down on his favourite bars and go-gos. He has been to Pattaya around 4 million times and he is right on most things.

http://www.phuket-info.com/forums/pa...eawakened.html

The one thing he isnt right about is that it is a SHORT WALK FROM ARECA LODGE TO BAHT BUSES!

Going back are you? Are you bringing Mrs Cap on this trip? I'm in Patong in October, so hopefully we can catch up.

Hi Mike - no she's not coming - wants me to take her to Cuba or Dominican Republic in May 08 for salsa lessons so this is/might be the only Thailand trip for 12 months. Sold half the boat so she's also getting her new kitchen - got to be some give and take!!! Cap d'Agde action not bad this summer so getting enough although weather is cr ap.

What are your dates Mike so I can make sure our paths cross - I'm 4-24 Oct in LOS with the above stated 1 week Patts at the beginning I reckoned.

AC

P.S. She went and got both nips pierced last week - something else to catch my teeth on....

Hey Crusty One - yeh I lied - after Oct there's two weeks timeshare with Mrs C and the boys in Tenerife, then the above Cuba trip to fund so it might be Oct 2008 before I get back again.

Here's the famous "sh it-on- ti ts" couple again (Mrs Cap on left) so you can see I have to do as I'm told..... she's just finished Patpong Sisters and I'll bring it back with me.

Make sure you don't thow the babes out with the jacuzzi water.

"Secrets" is NOT a Hotel,it is simply a Guesthouse perched on top of a bar in a very poorly lit area. The rooms are quite small, and IMHO there are far superior bargains to be had in that price range.
Finally it has no lift and the stairs are narrow and steep, seems like "Everest" when returning early morning after a good drinking session.

SORRY TO have to say townville but what a load of garbage !

i have been in pattaya 29 times have stayed all over town soi2/soiskaw beach/ penthouse hotel/asia hotel/ even jomtien and secrets is without doubt the best value hotel i have stayed in the rooms are not small as you say (unless you stayed in a 750 bhat room) its idealy located very clean only has one drawback NO swim pool but you can use the pool at windy hill hotel just along walking street

yes you might get cheeper rooms in pattaya (i have stayed in them) but they are usualy in need of redecorating and the reason they are cheaper as in the carlton hotel on soi 5 2nd road (i stayed there 12 times) is because no one wants to stay there because of their need of maintainence and decorating.

as for the stairs i am a lazy bastard just look at my comments about walking to/from areca lodge but i have no probs with the stairs at secrets although have to say i would never stay on the 3rd floor (thats going too far 555555)
