Talked with Tim a few days ago and it seems like we are going for Areca Lodge, but not sure yet. We are so lazy so we prefer to have the pool outside our hotel door Then we don't have to crawl so far for the morning swim

The hotel and bar staff are great, and it's located right near all the best gogo's in walking street.
One day we took a short baht bus ride to Mikes Mall (around Soi 8 or 9)and used the pool located on the roof (only way up there is to take the elevator to the 10th floor). Large pool and snack bar with a great view of the entire city.

Went by the Areca Lodge as Iltis's friend Eric stayed there. The pools look great but apparantly you have to get down early to "stake out" a chair. We were there around noon and all chairs had towels on them but there was nobody sitting in them (didn't check out the rear pool).

They do have signs up saying something like if any towels are left on sunloungers for more than 30 mins unattended ,that they will be removed .....

Now that seems like a place for me
well this Areca Lodge seems like a good place to stay. Gonna try it out there for a week to start with.
How big is pattaya really? is it like double of patong or 10x ?
Little difficult to imagine from a map but it looks like a main beachroad and second and third road onto that.
my guessin that there is sois all over the beachroad sort like bangla roads up to the 2nd road but instead of 1 in patong there is. .god now how many there.
Last time when had 1 night in bkk before travel home i was little suprised that the bar areas wasnt that big and many as i expected.

i think you and Datsun will love Areca Lodge and even the location
for me, it is right in the middle of pretty much anywhere i want to go
you can walk to Walking St(about 15 minutes) or walk 5 minutes to beach rd and jump on a baht bus
if you want to go down to Soi2 or the shopping mall theatres, just hop on a baht bus on 2nd road
Soi Diana, which is the soi Areca is on, has a cluster of beer bars, plus some good restaurants
you are also near Wonderful Bar on 2nd road that is fun

It's easily 4-5 times bigger than Patong Tim.....and about 100 times as many gals...so your odds are definitely increased
I agree that Areca is all you want at a great price and just nearby is Pattaya Bay Resort which also has good rooms at good prices....
You'll probably start out around walking st but make sure you spread it a litle wider as your stay goes longer....as M26 says the area arond soi Dian is great and ther are loads of sois runing from 2nd road down to the beach and they are all choca with bas etc....soi 6 is a must see.eye openner
also up on the 3rd road ther are some quitere more expat oriented bars wher the beers are cold and The gals hot....these bars give good value for money
there are some good clubs like Luzifers don on walking street too which play pretty decent music
You guys will have a hoot mate!!!

Hearty breakfast buffet with quite a few choices. It is quite a large property, not the compound type like the 5 stars.
But be warned. An embarrassed receptionist told me at check in as the room was what I thought I heard she said a single an additional guest i.e. 2 girls in a room would be an additional 500bt. Now I can’t recall if I booked a single or a double. So perhaps check that one out. I would say that 90% of guests were mongers. This observation is based on who was in the breakfast room and around the pool.
It is very close to then new shopping centre on 2nd road. It’s not in the middle of the action but very close to second rd but then the action in Pattaya can be anywhere. And there are bars and venues within the vicinity of Areca. There is a nice little indoor bar from Areca towards 2nd road call I think called pappayo next to a pizza restaurant. Nice decked out bar and some nice looking younger girls. Nice place to start the night with.
If you check the website, it is exactly the way it is.

Stayed at Areca 26 March until 6 April 2008
All good comments are correct about this place.
The pools are great, the rooms are big, the service and breakfasts also great, and it is certainly girl friendly. Would definately stay there again and I had my wife and 2 daughters with me also. Not once did they feel uncomfortable with their surroundings.
Word of warning though.
The second building has 2 construction sites going on.
1 at the back and 1 to the right of the hotel as you look at it from the street.
The one at the back I believe is Areca building 3. This can be very noisy from early in the morning. ( I did not notice myself as too pissed on Sang Som each night )
Also on the left of building 2 there is a vacant block which currently has tin sheds some local Thais live in and they have more than a dozen roosters. These can be heard from around 3am crowing. ( again I did not notice just what the wife and kids said ).
The only other 2 things is the air con on the balcony blows hot air at you so unless you turn it off its not useable and the bath/shower does not have a non slip mat making it very slippery and as a consequence I have 4 broken ribs in my back as I fell and hit the edge of the bath very hard.
Pappayo was closed the whole time I was there. Someone said something about the owner going broke. Don't no if this is true.
Regards
DB

You are 100 percent correct and the pool water is warmer also than the front pool.
Both pools are very busy however and some days I found the back pool to have more people than the front. My kids used to go to and from the pools as we would sit at the back pool but they profferd the cooler water in the front one.
