how does this sound?
I am after some advice on if my plans are sound or have a flaw in them, as a first time visitor to both bangkok and pattaya. I am thinking of spending 4 nights in bangkok to check out nana and cowboy and the eden club, then down to patts for 7 nights then onto phuket for another 10 nights and meeting up with some old friends.
In bangkok im thinking of staying at the magestic suites, then onto patts and either the Areca lodge or Pattaya bay resort, in phuket its the summerbreeze as always. My main question is , my flight leaves bangkok at 10.50am for phuket so i am thinking of leaving patts early in the morning with mr tooms, is this sound? or would i be better travelling back the night before and sleeping in bangkok. If the early morning trip seems ok what time would i have to leave pattaya to make sure i wont miss the flight onto phuket?

These cannot be "plans", you said "thinks" or "either" too many times...
The answer to your "main" question is up to YOUR preference. Taxis run 24/7... Pick any of the several hundreds available at any given time.
Leave 4 hours from Pattaya to make a flight from Bangkok to Phuket just to be sure. You left out which airport in Bangkok, otherwise I might have saved you 10 minutes...

Remember, Suva airport is closer to Pattaya than Don Muang. So you have to calculate departure time from hotel taking in consideration what airport... and also if weekday or weekend (traffic).

Did that trip with Mr Toom. Suppose driving time is approx 1¾ hours. Check with Mr Toom what time you have to leave Patts. Suppose 0700-0730 would be OK.

why not book a later departing flight from Bkk to Phuket? Then you don't put pressure on yourself and can relax on your last morning in Pattaya
I just booked PBR for part of my trip and have been considering the Areca and Majestic Suites ao to nearly all your hotel choices are OK by me

I have found it better to go bangkok-Phuket-then on to Pattaya Bangkok Airways Co. Ltd., fly from Phuket to Pattaya then taxi back to BKK to go home.

have done this plan of trip and stayed in the same places as you are planning many times...good sound places all of them
I would get a later flight to Phuket as Caerphilly recommends.....mid afternoon is perfect... that way you get to have a big last night in patts some late breakfast and a swim in the pool before you head out...plus miss the morning traffic.... when you get to SB you can have a sleep and dinner + a beer or two before heading out again
best of both worlds

I agree totally with Caerphilly and N1, on this point.
But a word of caution, Mr. Planter...
If you change your domestic flight itinerary, be SURE of which airport the flight is operating from....BKK or DMK. Either airport is fine, as long as you don't take a taxi from Pattaya and end up at the WRONG airport.
Have fun.

planter why not look into leaving Pattaya at lunch time and fly from there ( U Tapao airport ) only around 35 mins by taxi.
Fly direct to Phuket missing out Bangkok return drive on that boring highway

yep it sounds good on paper but you won't save any money as taxi fares will only be a few hundred bht more to go to SUV than U-Tapao but airfares will be a lot more.....and you won't save much time as flights take about 2 hours (its a small plane) if direct but a lot stop off in Samui on the way which will actually make the door to door time more.....UP2U

Airfares were a little more Nels agreed but the travelling time was far quicker door to door.
Both 2 last flights i took May and November 07 were only 55 mins or so. And direct, with Bkk Airways
2 more weeks and i`ll be on that route again and isnt U Tapao cuter than the crowds in Bkk ? and only 20 peeps or so at baggage claim 55555

unfortunatly flights are already booked! however i could swap the bangkok and patts legs around. meaning when i fly into bangkok airport i head straight down to patts then come back to bangkok 3 or 4 days before the phuket flight. Would getting to the airport be easier and quicker from the magestic suites than patts? This might be the way to go , what do you think?

I enjoyed doing Phuket first before Patts this past trip.
I am always cautious to plan anything too early in the day as my sleeping patterns become that of a bg very quickly while in LOS. Very tough to get up before noon.

Hotels are a flaw....find a hotel between the beach road and number 2 road NOT on the other side of it.
IMHO both hotels are in poor locations - on the wrong side of number 2 road - you are going in the quiet season so consider Flipper Lodge or anything else that is GF is soi 7 or 8....or Sabai Lodge in Soi 2....or cheap with location location location at the Diamond Beach Hotel (if you fall out of bed - or the bugs push you - you'll land in Walking Street or a beer bar in Soi Diamond)...

Yep, Pattaya-BKK-HKT works better for me - I'd say screw trying to get to a 10.50 am flight out of Swampy from Pattaya...too many variables on the long road...much easier from Sukumvit....remember you will be up late the night before...

jeeze SS that's quick....I flew BKK at Xmas and mine took at least 1 hour 50 mins with no stop...was only a small plane though...and BKK to HKT is always an hour or more and that's on the BIG planes??
I'm 50/50 on the issue....way I see it there's very little difference....time + cost wise....but yep as far as airports go I'd sooner U-Tapoa to BKK/SUV

I got the emails back from areca and pattaya bay today, and i am going with pattaya bay, 8 nights at 999 baht a night every 6 nights gets one free!, so paying 6993 plus 1300 for airport pick up total 8293 baht, areca wanted 1350 per night = 10800 plus 2000 airport pick up = 12800 so 4500 baht extra or 54% extra. based on the reports off this board it doesnt sound like areca is that much better than pattaya bay so i hope ive chosen right, any thoughts appreciated, Bill of course at summerbreeze has my room all sorted for the phuket leg

If dates coincide could share some taxis if it suits

A wise choice! And just go to BKK the day before. You can take a minibus to BKK for 400 Baht or take the bus from the bus station on North Pattaya Road for 117 Baht. It is more comfy than a so-called limo which as often as not turns out to be a little car. Takes less than 2 hours. Bus station in BKK is right on the sky train line at Ekamai. Jump on the sky train and ride it up to Nana stop or catch a taxi there.
To catch a flight out of BKK at 10:50, you're looking at getting up by 7:00 AM!! Ruin your whole last night in Pattaya! You are supposed to be there for check-in 45 minutes early, and if you leave only 2 hours to get there, you may run into a rush-hour traffic jam and miss it. Why take a chance?
