Phuket is not as expensive as everyone says IMHO you can rent an apartment up in Nanai rd for around 12,500bht plus electric or cheaper digs for around 8000bht per month then just food to worry about it's the drinking and girls that kill the budget.
If you like the beach etc Phuket is a good spot you could always go around to Kata or Karon maybe a bit cheaper than Patong.

Pattaya cheapest?
Right now I am seeing rooms advertised at 3500 a month , (no doubt not the Ritz) , baht buses 10 baht no argument, noodles 25/30 baht, I can't imagine any other mainstream place in Thailand being any cheaper or provide a more complete environment.

Pattaya is a lot cheaper.. However Pattaya is a little more single focus that Phuket IMHO.. Great for having mad fun every night and gogo chasing but I tire of that fairly easily..
Bangkok / Patts etc are (for me) nice for a visit.. Few days and I feel burn out, I am sure it would be different if I was only getting a month a year vacation.. Phuket has a more livable environtment for me..

WOW, That is very cheap but I sure didn't find that type of prices when I was in Pattaya in October 2004. Pattaya sure is fun during the PM hours but it is soooo boring during the day ! Bangkok seems to be very fun both during the day and at night, of course without the ocean but then again the ocean in Pattaya look polluted anways

But its not hard to get out of pattaya beach and hit islands or even Jomtien beach for an improvement..
I have always found Pats to be WAAYYY cheaper than here or Bonkers.. Also I find anything more than 5 or so days in Bonkers a bit much.. Traffic, pollution, etc
