Canon EOS400D

Is it anyone with experience of this one..?

Have been looking around to buy a "real" camera without putting out too much money.. Been reading some rewiews of it, and it seems most people are happy with it...

Around 27000B in Sweden now with an 18-55 objective...

It's a great camera. I'm a Nikon guy so would prefer a Nikon D40X at around the same price, but that's just a personal preferance.

Heard nothing but good reviews on this camera.

Dont know if the new 450D is as good.

There's a big difference between the 40D and the 450D. They will be built around the same technology, but the 40D is a more advanced and fully featured camera.

Don't know much as I am a Nikon man (now D80, my 5th Nikon, second digital one). What I can say is that I would go for a zoom a bit more powerfull than a 18-55 (on non-digital camera's this equals a 24-73). This means you need a second objectif for more flexibility. I would go for at least a 18-135, even better a 18-200.

They are a bit restrictive those 18-55 zooms aren't they? Enough to get you started though, and once you start you don't stop.

I would agree with the 18-200, if you can run to one of those as well it would be a great setup.

The AF-S DX Nikkor 18-200mm f3.5-5.6G IF-ED VR lens offers a longer focal length range and is optically stabilized.

Why not you try both out, play around with it at the camera shop and then decide.

I made the mistake of buying my D80 with the 18-135, as it was approx 170 Euro cheaper and I can use my old 75-300 with it. As those zoom lenses on digital camera's give 1/3 more zoom (an 18-200 works like an 24-300 on a camera working with film).
If I had bought the 18-200 I could have travelled lighter and leave my 300 home. Damn.

I would buy at least an UV-filter, as this also protects the lens. I like also a polarising filter to have deeper colours when taking pics of sea and clouds.

The difference between Canon and Nikon is miniscule, more about personal preferance than anything else. I'm a nikon guy, but that's just my choice.

As far as lenses go, I would say that an 18-200 is ideal because it covers pretty much everything. That said, it doesn't mean that you have to buy a new lens straight away.

On my last trip, Cambodia and Thailand, I didn't change lenses once. My camera came with an 18-70 (which is a far better lens than the 18-55) and it covered everything I wanted to shoot, from Phuket sunsets to Angkor Wat and everything inbetween. I came home with around 2000 pictures.

Two things I would say are:

1 A polariser or daylight filter is something I see as a must. They make a big difference.

2 I use Sigma lenses quite a lot now and they are a very, very good alternative. Don't be afraid of third party glass.

I'd suggest if you get a larger lens without IS (Image Stabilisation), you might want to invest in a lightweight monopod. I have the 400D and love it.

Congrats!!

Tarzan - that is a great camera, you will love it. To second the polarizer suggestion I recommend the "Moose" warming filter. It is a combo 81A+polarizing filter distributed by THK. It really improves the quality of your photographs, especially in the SEA sun! I also use the 17-85 IS and the 28-135 IS lenses with the latter being the "better" lens but the wide angle of the first lens is absolutely recommended. Enjoy your new camera!!

A friend of mine goes to Singapore quite often to visit his gf. In general there is about 20-30% price difference (cheaper) as compared to prices in Belgium.
For instance : last year he brought me a panasonic lumix fz8 for 280€ (camera, a bag for it and a 2 gb sd card). At the time you had to pay 350 to 400 € for it in Belgium, and that was only the camera, no extras.
He also told me to look around, and not buy right away, a bit of haggling can get you better deals (especially in smaller shops).Make sure you get an international warranty with it.
Bought myself a Nikon D60 recently, great stuff! Noticably better picture quality than my fz8.

Check the price for Nikon in Thailand...lot cheaper than Belgium. But then on my D80 an SB600 flashlight is marked "Made in Thailand". My earlier Nikons were all made in Japan.
