Then I go to my brother, And I say brother help me please...
But he winds up.... knocking me... back down on my knees..
There have been times that I thought I couldnt last for long...
But now I think Im able to.. Carry on..
Its been a long, A long time coming but I think a change gonna come, Ohh yes it will..."]
Some believe he was killed because of this song, Because at the time that he wrote it, Was when they were surpressing the black communitys in America, And this song and them lyrics in particular where about asking there "White brothers" (The President, Polititions...) for help, But they just looked turned there backs on them because they were black...
Not long after he released this song, His was killed extremely strange circumstances, In a hotel by a black women of all people but nobody ever believed this and the women in question was let go shortly afterwards...

In my opinion it`s one of the strongest, most powerfull songs ever,Ally !!
I remember wathing a series of documentaries on Norwegian TV this autumn about the History of Soul music, one of the episodes was mainly about Sam Cooke, people around him did get a bad feeling about this song...like it was the end of something...and like you said..shortly after he was murdered under strange circumstances !!

I agree, Its a real shame though as he was one of the most talented soul singers ever, Real silky smooth soulful voice, My brother just picked up a couple of his Live albums
from the Harlem Square club from 1963 and another Live one but cant remember where this one was done, If you have not got them, I could bring you a couple of copys at Xmas, If you want.....

Sorry j_jazz have to disagree with you there........buy any house, hip hop, rap etc record of the last 25 years and you will find funk samples running through the whole body of the songs........it's just that it has been repackaged with new beats and stretches....but in many cases the result is fab...
I do of course love Jazz as well however it's not always a mood I am in...........you got the stars there with your post........Miles, Mingus, Sun Ra etc however I would certainly put Isaac in the Funk section.........
Parliamenty is a big fave of mine too............I saw George Clinton in Sydney earlier this year with a collaboration he was calling Parliament..........no Bootsy tho'

This is impossible so I'll just list the songs that changed my life and musical direction from that point on and the age I was when i heard it first.
1. Led Zep - Immigrant Song - age 9
2. Kiss - Rock and Roll All Night - age 12
3. The Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop - age 18
4. Motorhead - Ace of Spades - age 20
5. Tool - 11 - age 32
And IMVHO
Greatest riff - Led Zep - Kashmir
Most beautiful song - Radiohead - Slow Down (don't think that's the name??)
Strangest vocalist - David Serkamp of Pavlovs Dog
Best bassline - Donna Summer - I Feel Love (Georgio Moroder really)

I reckon that Kiss's "I was made for lovin' you" has a pretty good baseline Dave...............but my favourite rhythm section is Sly (Dunbar) and Robbie (Shakespear)

My "bedroom" jukebox has percy sledge.. Otis (selected tracks, try a little tenderness, dock of the bay, soul man) Aretha.. Sam cooke.. and al green on my 'lovin' playlists..
I was brought up on soul music and the older I get the more I like the same blues, soul, R&B (real not hip hop) stax volt, memphis blues etc.. That my folks used to play..
There are some modern Nu Soul artists that have the edge.. Angie Stone, Heather Headly (her carear is young so she has to be a little commercial but 'My Man' and a couple of others are pure strong vocalism) Andrew Roachford... etc

Anytime someone famous suffers an untimely death, the "conspiracy theorists" come out of their closet.
Sam Cooke is one of the all-time great singers to have walked on this planet, IMHO. Offhand, the ony one I can think of who I would even put in the same class as him is Aaron Neville of the Neville Bros., although there are many others, including Al Greene Smokey Robinson, and Little Anthony who are not too far behind.
BUT, he lived on the edge. He lived the life he sang about. He ran with the fast crowd. And had more women throwing themselves at him than any BM in LOS. He was a ladies' man extraordinaire. Someone on a recent post mentioned about how a jealous TG can be dangerous, and that Latino women were even more hot-blooded and potentially dangerous. Well, I am here to say that American black women are second to none in that category. They are often raised on the mean streets and can get very crazy, plus they are usually bigger and stronger, more naturally muscular and physically agressive than any other type of woman, IMHO.
So Sam Cooke died the way he lived, passionately, in the heat of the moment, when passions got way out of control between him and a jealous woman. It was a real damn shame, because it was such a loss for all of us, but it didn't come as a surprise, IMHO.

From the movie Joe Dirt "My favorite bands are Led Zepplin,ACDC and Van Halen..NOT Van Hagar"... Funny movie
Five from my innocent childhood:
Shambala -Three Dog Night
American Woman-The Guess Who
Roll on down the Highway-Bachman Turner Overdrive
Free Ride-Edgar Winter Group
Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting-Elton John
From my teens
These three count as one 'cause they must be played together
Runnin with the Devil/Eruption/You really Got Me- Van Halen
Foreplay/Long Time-Boston (Hey I used to sing about "longtime" and foreplay!)
Detroit Rock City- Kiss
The Wizard- Black Sabbath
2112 side 1- Rush (technically the whole first side is one story )
Cat Sratch Fever- Ted Nugent (I know, thats 6)
From my responsible early adult years
Mean Street- Van Halen
You Shook Me All Night Long- AC DC
Crazy Train- Ozzy Osbourne
In the Still of the Night- Whitesnake
Welcome to the Jungle- Guns and Roses
these days not a lot of hard rock goes mainstream and I only listen to the radio so I miss out.
Show Me How To Live-Audioslave
Slither- Velvet Revolver
Aint no surprise(that bi#ch is leavin me)- Theory of a Deadman
And whatever CrazySwede is listening to!
