Try never to use them, but if it is raining I can need one to go back to hotel.
IF raining I prefer rear ended as you stay dryer, or I get in beside the driver.

I prefer side entry tuk tuks as they are far more fun and have incredible maneuverability.

Rear entry have the advantage of being more spacious but sitting sideways on in the back in not as enjoyable as it's side entry cousin.

On the main Loy Krathong night last november, the lady and I had a table for 2 booked down by the river in Chiang Mai.
As you can probably imagine, the traffic was really jam packed that evening and we were worried we might not make it on time.

Met a young guy driving a side entry tuk tuk on the other side of Tae pae gate from my hotel who knew a lot of 'short cuts' and assured us he would get us there on time...he was right.

This ride was one of the most thrilling street races Iv'e ever had the pleasure of, it was exactly had I imagined those stunt drivers felt in the Bond movie & I was whooping with joy and excitement all the way. The way he drove was really on the edge and probably quite dangerous but it was superb so I didn't care.

I tried to get myself a job driving one..but it didn't work out.

Hey Mr. Hobbs this sounds alot like a sexual question. Side entry or back entry. So... if we go that route I would have to say back entry.

Exclamation Tuks Tuks & Metered Taxis

The day they take them off the road and replace them with either something like the bahtbuses or meter taxis will be a great day for tourism on Phuket.

I know that it's not the theme of this thread but I have to agree that if there is one thing lacking in Patong etc it's metered taxis. Many Asian tourist areas have them, even Bali. It is nice just to jump in an airconditioned vehicle and see what you are paying as you go. Just give the driver a nice sling at the end and he is happy. Always used them in Bali before I became a Phuket convert and they were cheaper than the negotiated fare vehicles so you were happy to tip well.

Is there a reason why they are not prevalent in Phuket?

A lot more air-con limo's are appearing in Patong , they usually have a fixed price list for the main areas and can also be hired for a full/half day. Price wise , they are about the same as tuk tuk's but are much more comfortable.

Doing research for a graduate project, Hobbsy?

Prefer to see the road ahead of me, so side entry for me.
