Book economy but use airmiles to upgrade , or if lucky get upgraded for free.
Now about 66% of flights in Business Class .

I can't afford any other seat than economy

Have you seen the outrageous price difference for business?
Never worth it IMHO for a few hours discomfort.
Then again,if money is not a concern,go for it.

Always peasant class for me, though my airmiles are building so will look into upgrading next time. Got bumped upstairs on an Air France flight once, a different world.

cattle class

been upgraded 1 time on thai to business class the rest of the time in cattle class.

anyone know if you when you book in you can get a cheaper upgrade to business at the check in desk ?

some flights especially from los, business has been virtually empty, so wondering if the upgrade ploy at check in might work.

Upgrades on TG used be USD400 from Y to C one way, but thats going back a few years

good option

thanks for that Steve, it saved me from looking through the frequent flyers handbook. (couldnt find the thing)

some times when faced with that journey i always thought spend the extra money, that upgrade option is a lot cheaper than buying a business class fare.

Just been looking at an upgrade with Royal Jordanian out of Dubai into BKK.

For the 6 and a half hours approx it worked out at $850 (33,400-ish Baht) on top of the ticket cost. I then took out my big red chubby crayon and a fag packet (Cigarette carton for our cousins across the pond) I worked out my hotel cost, meals, BF's, LT's and a coke or three and thought sod it its not really worth it for that length of time.

So it's on with the blinkers, 2 sleeping tablets, keep moving down the aisle to 43F and moooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Have booked "Cattle Class" with Emirates for this trip , Business would have doubled the price (at least !!!!) , so am just keeping my fingers crossed that they are very kind and upgrade me for at least one of the four sections of my flights.
Having said that , will earn enough airmiles to be able to upgrade my next trip.

despite being able to afford business class, I just don't think it's worth paying 3-4 times the cost of an economy ticket. I do occaisionally use miles to u/g to business though.

i have been fortunate to been upgraded frequently in the last 1 1/2 years.

that being said, if i am on a great asian airline(cathay, singapore) i would not purchase business, although still a little uncomfortable, their service in ecomony is top notch.

i did fly northwest airlines once to BKK and paid 400usd for an upgrade at the boarding gate because airlines in the states suck, sothe only way you get good service is in business and 1st class

I have put into place a policy within my company that if the flight is under 6 hours we fly economy....if it is over 6 its business......that's because most of my Architects + Designers are expected to work as soon as they get off the plane............so I am happy to pick up the tab for that

I pretty much follow the above policy personally as well unless one of the big companies I am doing work for offers to pay 1st Class..........which happens from time to time if they realy need me in a hurry or are having a big bash or I just don't want to go (so I say that's a precondition)...but not often

Sometimes I'll buy economy and use airpoints to upgrade when I travel on a purely personal holiday but most of my LOS trips are butted each side of a business trip to Europe or the States from Aus or NZ

always fly business from dubai to bkk. my company pays 900usd for all my r and r flights and business is only 1100usd. two hundred usd for double air miles and wine with my fish. the extra air miles lets me upgrade when i fly back to us once a year.

I fly economy as the difference in price for only a few hours isnt it worth imho. I got an upgrade with thai air for my flight from chaing mai to bkk. Nice to have but i spend my money better in the hotel, restaurants and girls.

I flew Thai air business class from Phuket to Bangkok once because the economy seats were sold out.Too short a flight to really appreciate the extra elbow room.Other than that it's economy every time.1st class seat prices are insane.I could never justify that much cash for pampering and legroom.
Who are you first class travelers?? and can I have some of your money since you're throwing it away anyway??(sorry I'm just jealous you're rich. )

I always use the China Airlines Biz Class service when flying to & from Los from Amsterdam, because it's too long a haul in economy and the price is reasonable £900 rtn.
However, twice a year I also go to Aussie from Los via Singapore & then I use Economy and that hurts.

flyin' comfortably

I try to always fly on star alliance. I have long legs so i can use economy + on united or use 500 milers to upgrade in the states. I save my miles for business/ first class on trips to europe and asia. Used my united miles for singapore raffles for my songkran trip in a few weeks.

I always use seatexpert or seat guru to know exactly what type of seat i'll have before i book in economy. Can be a significant difference between planes and airlines e.g i cannot fit comfortably in economy on many asian carriers.

work flies me business on all flights of 4 hours or more, and there preferred airline is either BA or Virgin ( I try to stick to BA ), and I keep a look out for deals on BA miles, so its fairly easy to rack up points, eg recent BA triple miles promotion, also selective on which business hotels I use, eg JW Marriott give 3 miles for every pound spent. I have enoough in the bank for next business class flight to BKK or 3 business class upgrades.
Problem is that once you have flown business class on a long haul flight, you never want to fly economy again!
BTW I don't rate Thai business class - service is great, but the seats suck!

I treated my self on the last trip and payed for a "royal class" seat coz it wasn't very expensive IMO but mostly it's economy class for me... However when I go abroad in the name of the company then it's business class

Cluck Cluck, Baaaaaaaaaaaa, Moooooooo I always pity the person who gets to sit next to me in cattle. I have the window seat with a weak bladder. Drool heavily and talk in my sleep. Even this didn't put off the little old Dutch woman I sat next to last time! She just jabbed me with her knitting needles all the way to Schipol.

Managed to get a "Royal" seat with Jordanian once but only because they had over-booked..........AGAIN! Sat next to thier British Business Development bloke on the way to Amman. I think he was glad to get off the flight as I gave him the benefit of how an airline should be run after about four, half bottles of RJ's best red! 5555555555

I only go economy. The flight from Perth to Sing is only 5 hrs & then from Sing to Phuk 1.5 hrs.
I would find it difficult to justify spending a lot more money for the reasonably short flights & the Perth /Sing flight I spend 2 hrs sleeping. However, if they upgraded me I wouldn't complain.
