Reactions to LOS
I was wondering what the reactions were from friends and/or family when you told them you were visiting LOS for the first or subsequent times.

In Sweden Thailand have a very good reputation for holidays, the only negative destination may be Pattaya.

First time
The first time I went to Thailand I had lots of "advice." One of my best friends (a girl) tried to tell my I would be safer/better off going to Bali instead. Another woman I worked with gave me a long lecture on safe sex. My mother thought it was a good idea until she read some magazine article that said Phuket was full of ******s. The bottom line: you can't win.

Sweden is one of the biggest tourist groups to Thailand and most of them is in fact couples and families, I guess thats why it has so good reputation there. Swedish people love Thailand.
But also as Tarzan pointed out, if you are single it may raise some questions but still not too bad.
Pattaya had a lot of bad press in Sweden early 90's, and no charter is serving Pattaya either. Pattaya is for most people sex tourism.

Most of my friends are scuba divers and know that Thailand has good scuba diving. So I tell them I am going over there to go scuba diving. I just don't tell them how many night dives that I am going to do also. But I love the island of Phuket and really liked the people that I met so it is a great overall destination for me. My only regret is that the best diving needs to be done on a liveaboard so I miss a few nights in Phuket.
And I will tell other guy friends who don't dive that I am going for both the ladies and the diving and they are usually envious.
And if the ladies give me any trouble I tell them that they had a chance to keep me from going and they blew it. And I thank them for that.

The first and only time I was planning to go to Thailand I had no idea what was in store for me. I knew absolutely NOTHING about the place (I hadn't found this forum yet). I had a free flight anywhere in the world so we went looking for a place that would be really expensive to get to but once there, would be cheap.... Thailand it was!
Because I didn't know what to expect, I didn't really pay any attention to people's reactions. Next time I go, I won't be able to say "we're going cause it's cheap" with a straight-face.

Most people who are ignorant of LOS, assume the WORST.
A couple of weeks ago, I'm playing golf with a group from our "mens club". I wind up sharing a golf cart with a very "straight laced, religeous type". A fellow that I've known for a few years. And, a nice enough guy. But...I couldn't resist!!!
After a few holes, he ask's, when I'm returning to LOS. I reply, about 3 weeks from now. He's silent for a few moments (thinking). He then say's, "Aren't you worried about sexual diseases, over there?"
Snappily, I replied, "Well yeah! You can't be too carefull! I haven't met a girl in LOS, yet...that didn't have SOMETHING! Hell, Dave, I picked up herpes from my current g/f, and genital warts about 8 months ago. And a couple of cases of ghonnerea, here and there. But hell, I can live with all these! But my new g/f, is HIV positive...so I "mostly" try to use a rubber, with her. But, you know, "old buddy"...that's the price you pay, for being a "swinger"...right?"
I thought he was going into SHOCK! He was quiet, for a couple of holes. Then he said something to the other two players in our group. (One of which is a good friend, and well traveled in Asia) My good friend started laughing, and said "He's yanking your chain, David!"
Tell them what they want/expect to hear, I guess?

My mum never talks about the girls but knows thet are there. When I tell her that I stay with only "one" she feels a bit more easy. I do have some travelers in the fan=mily and they were all for it. Unfortunately many people in the USA do not travel so they only have a one look vision of Thailand. Now my mates are all just jealous that they cant go.
