A visit from a "Friend"
As it is in the news, president George W. Bush, is visiting germany for one day.He visits the eclection area of our cancellor Angela Merkel, which is in the east of germany. Again, a whole area is under special security conditions!!
12500 Policeman are in duty for his safety.Residents only can get in their apartements after passing several security checks.
To show him, how welcome he is in germany, about 1000 selected people ( about 300 of them are from an army academy) , will winking him on his way to the meeting with Merkel. Last time he visited, everybody was evecuated or had to stay in their houses ( no joke), not allowed even to open the window . The city was like a ghostcity. This time it should be different, this is because the people are selected. The security costs are estimated to come up to 20 mio €, for his one day visit!!!
I cant remember that this kind of security conditions are needed if any other world leader is visiting germany.
What do you think about this??

But this is not my intension!I am just surprised why someone who is not welcome in most countrys must add a sightseeing tour to his visit, which makes the living of the people there unconvinient. And it is not a anti-american thread ( as not my intension). I only see the it like it has been in the comunist times in eastern germany, when a high politician from russia come for a visit. Is this a president of the US solemnly.
Just compare it to the visits from other US presidents like Clinton, carter, etc. the people were very happy and they walked through the streets among the people.

I had to rearrange my plans to get to Miami airport a few years ago because of a PotUS motorcade - rush hour too, it was chaos out there. The whole presidential (not just Bush) security thing is out of control: considering the amount of inconvenience he causes to citizens, at home or abroad, he should stay home and get some work done. besides that reduce security, a few more assassinations might help filter out the less dedicated candidates.

Why shouldn't these guys go sightseeing? And why shouldn't the people who run these attractions have high profile visitors? Didn't the premier of Japan recently visit Gracelands?
Surely its part of the perks of the job.

How many policeman and special services have been there when he visited US? 5.000 , 10000 ?
And did all the people living around there had to stay in their homes not to get shoot by the snipers if they should open a window?
Just read my first post, for his safety there are 12.500 Policeman only for him!! Hey man this is an army! Some small countries dont have an army that big!!!
I just ask if it can be justified to make this afford for one person!!Not only for US president, for any person.I dont think that our cancellor needs that security whilst visiting the US.

Another point i wrote, is the fact that it was his special wish to meet people out of the german population. Last time he visited a big city in germany it was like a ghosttown he was driving through. I would feel shamed that people have to be ordered and payed to give me a wink!!

The Chinese President's visit to London not-so-long-ago was marked by careful vetting of people to wave him along the Mall and restrictions on where Falun Gong protesters could display themselves. Still there was relatively little disruption to the populace.

I think you mean "wave" at him. Wink means when you open and close only one eyelid, while keeping the other wide open. Now I am winking at you with the smilely!
Now I am waving my finger at you!
See the difference!

To sharks defense, "wink" means "wave" in german. Typical 1:1 translation error, happens all the time

It was Germany that decided to do what they did, not President Bush. Maybe the German government thought it was the right thing to do. We don't do that here in the US, we have no need to. We do block off the streets till the motorcade passes. A short inconvenience yes, though I prefer that over the destruction of cities and loss of innocent life around the world by terrorists. What does all of this have to do with Thailand? These posts may be better appreciated at www.i-hate-bush.com

Hi bushdoctor, this chapter is for threads out of the thailand topic.Second, you missed the topic: Not the fact he is visiting germany is the problem, but the fact he is doing a sightseeing and all the security affords to be made of this! And the fact, that people had to be selected and to be paid!!!! to give him a wave!!! I cant remember a visit of any US President´s before him, that this happend. But i remember that this kind of scenario´s have been usual in the times of comunism and in the former soviet union!!!

Don't you understand, this is the cowboy's idea of diplomacy. He graces your little country with his presence and now he expects you to do what he tells you.

Exactly, and that is why I hope and pray he will never come back to our little country and fcuks up daily life in the city where I live.
Let him go back to his ranch, feed his cattle and leave us alone so we can clear his garbage.
