Shanghai/China is also interesting or maybe Taiwan. But going to BKK to apply for a visa in advance is a hassle.

By some good planning and guiding you can still minimise the effect.........but Angkor Wat at Sunrise or Sunset is like being on Oxford st or 5th avenue at sales times sometimes.......and sorry to say it is only going to get busier as more and more package comapanies make a bigger buck out of it.....

You needd to stay in town away from them (they stay in the bigger hotels on the outskirts) and visit the more out of the way temple complexes (2nd circuit) once they have had their breakfast and hit the temples around 10.00am......

if you want temples then Bagan in myanmar (IIRC Nels,you've been there?) - I was often the only one in the temple.....
Not as impressive as Angkor but outstanding none the less and a chance to see a real world class site on your own, thoug two days with a horse and cart is enough to last a lifetime.

Ive ticked China and Singapore which i both like to visit although my next trip is to LOS and i would also go back to Japan and finish off what money and time stopped me doing

You don't need shoes if you visit Pagan. Never walked so much barefoot in my whole life.

yep Torn but a long time ago.......I think perhaps '79 or '80

did a 10 day trip around Myanmar (Burma then) which took me from Pangon (Rangoon) up to Mandalay.............up into the mountains from there.........back to Mandalay and then down the Irawaddy river on an overnight boat to Pagan........agree with Torn.....Pagan is an absolute gem of a place with over 1000 Pagodas (temples)....all within walking distance..........and if you love the feel of old world spiritual Asia this is the place to come........BTW it is the ancient capital of Burma........ and the people are absoluely wonderful

Me and a mate swam accross the Irawady at Pagan for a dare which had loads of the villagers in both trepidation and excitement as little did we know none of them had ever seen someone do this before......gotta say we did end up about a mile downstream as the curent was quite strong.....but we made it.....they sent a boat over to pick us up as we were too shagged to swim back........gotta be close to a mile accross there I think from memory?????

I'm sure the place is stil just as it was when we left it......sad to say but the junta has seen to this by western opposition to travelling there........

Sounds like you had a great adventure

Sadly the gov't threw just about everyone out of Pagan (now Bagan) and created New Bagan, outside the temple area. It's still a great place to go and the people are some of the best you will ever meet.
