You hit the nail on the head right here. I actually wouldn't recommend a Mac to an average user. They're great for graphic artists, filmmakers and musicians, but users have to enjoy getting under the hood and tweaking things a bit to see any real advantage to the OS.
On the down side, the lack of software choices is still somewhat of an issue (though you can run Windows OS on the new models and get the best/worst of both worlds).
And you'll always have fewer options available if you need outside help. I'm no fan of the Apple store in Phuket - but I have no other choice if I need someone to mess with the innards.
Though being safe from viruses without 3rd-party software is a big plus. No defrags needed either. System maintenance is a breeze. And you avoid a lot of other issues by being on the fringe - not using Internet Explorer, not putting up with Microsoft's enforced online system maintenance and "Windows Genuine (dis)Advantage".

I use Kaspersky Pro for anti virus, and Macafee firewall
I found Kaspersky catches stuff that AVG hasnt
Norton I wouldnt touch with a barge pole, intrusive and slows the system down

Not realy mate, i stopped using Internet explorer, swapped it for Firefox which is much faster then IE and way more secure. Still have to use IE for some sites though BUT i never use it for random surfing. Using IE can be compared to standing around with a sign around your neck that says "PLEASE KICK MY BALLS" I dont open spam mail, i dont download crap i dont want or know what it is. I know enough about computers to know what could potentially be a virus.
Im behind a hardware firewall.
And last, in worst case scenario if my computer would be infected and it cant be cured without reinstalling which it can in 99% of the cases, formating my 15gb system drive and reinstalling windows takes 40 or so minutes, everything automated including software installations.
Now just to do a damn scan with Norton AV takes what? 2 hours?

A full system scan on a 160GB partitioned hard disc takes me 20mins tops.
Just let it run in the background. Full scan once a week without fail, along with Ad-Aware and Spybot. Always run all three after I have used Limewire or any file-sharing site.
Only ever found one virus, as the programme has been that good at stopping them before downloading anything. I have to speak as I find, Norton have been good for me so far.

couple of times I had a virus while using AVG - it let it through then told me I had a virus.
Found Avast (free edition) through recommendations and it's been pretty good used together with a couple of anti spyware progs and a hardware firewall.

I run Linux so I don't really need an av, but I have clam anti virus installed on my system so I can scan files for m$ viruses, this helps when I'm sharing files with wimblows users, wouldn't want to pass a virus on now! As for mac users stating they can't get viruses, well here's some news for you, DON'T BLINDLY BELIEVE THE PROPAGANDA APPLE PUT ON THEIR WEBSITE! On my platform I can write & compile programs for Linux, windows, and the mac, so what's to stop anyone else writing a virus or a trojan for the mac? and guess what? Your av wouldn't even pick it up!

Correct. Maybe I should ask for the upgrade? But it might be less hassle just to disable Norton and go with AVG
Either way, NORTON SUCKS!!!

For the last 1½ year, I've used ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite, with Firewall, Antivirus and Anti Spyware.
But now after I just restored my Laptop PC to factory settings, I only use the free downloadable firewall from ZoneAlarm.
AVG and Kaspersky wont work with ZoneAlarm(At least thats what they claim), so I havent made my mind up yet what AV to use.

Use Norton 2006 AV but keeps opening and scanning at bad times and seems to slow my already poor and tired computer even more, so I think no more Norton. Also use Avast (free version), it has caught things Norton has missed. Also use Adaware and Spybot. Will give AVG a try I think

Anti Virus Software
I work for an ISP, we only recommend NOD32 ( Antivirus Software - Eliminate Spyware and Adware with NOD32 Antivirus from ESET)
Small foot print, low resource use and very user friendly.
It is not freeware. If you have never heard of this product you should do your self a favour and check it out.
I have been using it for many years and never had any problems.
Cheers

AVG is pretty good but tends to hog the memory whilst scanning. Try NOD32 - its free, its active and doesn't slow the pc to a crawl when running.

Been running Norton for about 4 years now. ZoneAlarm is pretty good too and you can get the basic version for free.

Looks like 'free' 30 day trial , then £23 per year.
