I would not cancel.

But I would not enter a possible war zone, e.g. Serbia or Iraq/Afghanistan.

Terrorism

I would sooner die enjoying myself in LOS rather than stay at home locked in my room worrying about possible terrorism...end of story

The bomb was on the other side of the road at TOT (telephone) office, opposite the gathering place. South Thailand is really a terrorist zone now, killings almost daily but the government are tracking them down and I think this may be solved soon.

I was in patong during the SARS last year and the only thing i returned to England with was an empty wallet , awareness and common sence is a good thing to take with you any where and there is only one thing you can be certain of in life is that your going to die some day , and your not going to know when you do

Not me as it can happen everywhere. Just remeber what happened in Madrid a few days ago... I travel alot across Europe for business purposes (I just came back from Paris and will be there again next week) and I'm aware (like Jean-Claude ) that there are always certain risks, especially when I travel to London, Paris or Milan. So I would never cancel my holidays for any reason (terrorist threats, SARS, bird flu, ...)

Exclamation

I think most of us "international" citizens dont give a toss about the terrorists. I was in Bali a few days after the bombing and was in Gungzhou, China during the Sars epidemic. I even went to Isaan during the Bird flu. I actually remember wishing after 9-11, whenever i was on a plane, that a terrorist would stand up, near me, and say "Nobody move - we are hijacking this plane". I would knock his teeth down his throat.

However, the vast majority of the tabloid reading public probably would be worried. My mother always asks if Phuket is safe every time there is a problem. "Safer than being in England" is the standard reply. A lot of my friends cancelled their trips to Phuket after Bali.

Why wouold I to cancel my holydays ? Today, terrorist acts can happen everywhere in the world, but I don't think that Thailand (except may be South for internal reasons) is a very attractive country for terrorists ... They prefer acting in countries friends of their eternal enemy USA, I guess ... We see it last month in Spain. I think UK aviod a terrorist attack 2 weeks ago ... It could be more dangerous now to stay in Europe or USA than in LOS, so I don't care at all about it.

Keep your head down.

Ive a couple of friends that have alredy died in an armchair with a can in one hand and a remote in the other while watching other people live their lives for them.

Short of war zones even in the worst places the chances of getting shot or blown up are low. No good pretending it 'cant happen to me' because it can. But what were the people in Lockerbie doing when that 747 dropped on them?

14 people a day killed on the roads in the UK. 27 a day in France. Thats killed, not injured/hospitalised etc. Terrorists are there and shouldnt be ignored but their total efforts dont come close to the dangers of daily life in Europe.

Keep a low profile, dont spout religous or political views and show respect for where you are. Im going to enjoy my month in Phuket and miss that car that would have run me down if Id stayed at home.

Probably catch a dose off a BG though

It can happen to you.

I have spent a bit of time in Colombia over the past 10 years.
Never went where I was advised not to go.
Delightful people and interesting place.
The third time I was there in Cali I was told by a taxi driver mate that some people were asking questions about me but not to worry. My friends would only have to pay 50K US to get me released if I was kidnapped.
I always kept a low profile and didn't dress like a tourist but I decided that it was time to spend time in places other than Colombia for a while.
It can happen to you but I would have to agree with the other posters that travel warnings are quite often exaggerated and sometimes even used as political tools.

Especially where the Australian government is concerned.

I did in fact cancel a trip to Tanzania a couple of years ago, during the civil unrest. Two days before we were due to go, the country was on the brink of civil war. Interesting enough; the only embassy that didn`t advise against going there was the norwegian.
This trip was supposed to be R&R from our peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, so we decided against it and vent to Cuba instead. Didn`t regret that decition... 12 days of bliss!

As for terrorism; the aftermath of 9.11 haven`t kept me from going to LOS and south-east Asia and never will.

Keeping your head down - Fat Chance!

I am in Jakarta at the moment, where we are still waiting to find out where the other two bombs are. Before I came here, I was told that the nightlife was centred around a place called Block M (thanks Stevem!). When I was given my security briefing by the company I was told that Block M was out of bounds - well, what I do in my own time is my own business! Its great. Mind you there is a great night club at the hotel I am staying at - lots of local girls at weekends.
Hotel security is quite intense, but it never gets to the stage when you think it is a pain in the ...
So, yes, I did no that Jakarta is more risky, when it comes to terrorism, but it didn't stop me coming here, or enjoying myself
