Where I do doubt it is mankind has really sucked since then. We've done nothing notable since. Nothing has toped that. So in retrospect it is hard to believe. It is all about believing

Kennedy painted a dream. They would have had to buy into that dream to make it real. A real stretch but doable if you line-up the biggest brains on the planet. If I am cynical now about the moon landing it is just disappointed there hasn't been a similar challenge in well over a generation. But I think that generation was better than any since. So I do believe.

I don't think he ever got into any sort of trouble for that either. I remember reading a followup story to that when it happened (a while ago now) -- I can't find it now but I'm pretty sure the guy he hit either ended up not filing charges or dropping them to do media pressure or something.
