I had just come back from Patong about a week earlier, and had to do long shifts at work to make up for the time missed. So I had worked right through to Christmas morning and had basically fallen asleep early evening to wake up in the early hours of Boxing day here in the UK.

As I turned the tv on with BBC news 24 running, they literally had only just recieved the breaking news of "reports of the Tsunami striking Thailand". Over the next 3-4 hours it emeraged how much deverstation there was around the Indian Ocean.

I was sound asleep in the ExPat hotel , BG was out in swimming pool and came running back in gibbering something about "water coming" !!!! Being hungover and not really understanding what she was on about , I rolled over and tried to go back to sleep.

She basically dragged me out of bed , got her clothes on and 'directed' me over to the coffee shop. Got a bit more news and was told that 'all' the staff were leaving !!!!.

Wandered over to Faulty's , it wasn't open but a few of the 'regulars' and expats were there and more stories came out. We decided to stay put , as the roads were packed and the police vans were 'broadcasting' warnings......in Thai !!!!

As the day's events unfolded more people turned up at Faulty's , some to find out what was going on , others who had been in 'beach-side' hotels who had lost everything.

Crusty and Mr.Yut (the chef) worked like troopers the whole time , making sure people were 'fed and watered' , everything they had in the kitchen was used up .

Thanks to all at Faulty's (staff and customers) for providing a welcoming and safe 'harbour' in troubled times.

Also saw a lot of people going to Valhalla , Jan and his staff also did a great job.

I was in Germany, preparing to fly home. My mobile went off with a text "Turn the news on." At first i thought it was going to be about either a plane crash at Frankfurt or something to do with Chelsea actually the latter first came to mind. I turned on BBC World and i could not believe the images i was seeing. What, for me, made it worse was the fact that i was in Phuket about 6 weeks prior and i recognised some of the locations. It was shocking to watch...

i was sitting next to the pool at jed pee nong hotel in huahin around 2pm when i heard my mobile phone ringing in my room went in and answered it and it was my mother frantically ringing from scotland she had put the tv on and had seen the news about the disaster .
i had planned to fly to phuket on the 28th for my first ever visit for 1 week, so she was worried i was in phuket , i assured her i was ok and then asked the staff to turn on the tv in the coffee shop when we saw the devastation we made the decision not to come to phuket and instead headed for pattaya. SO NEVER made my virgin trip to patong until november 2005.

It was around 9ish in the morning, Boxing Day, and I'd just logged onto the forum for a quick look. I was making my first trip a couple of months later, and this news really caught my eye. Nicke had already posted pics of the devastation around Patong, and like many others, I felt pretty helpless just watching the news.

Got caught up in the 2005 Easter Monday tsunami scare, and it was pretty unnerving, even though it proved to be a false alarm.

Minutes after it hit, literally, I was on my way down Rat-U-Thid rd. on a motorbike, from Sky Inn, as hotel (Summer breeze) was full. As I approached Sainamyen, I saw water all over the place and those wooden beach chairs strewn around. I was forced to turn up Sainamyen as everyone was running up from the beach. The road was packed with motorbikes, carts, people walking, and cars. We were jammed so tight it took about 20 minutes to get to Nanai Rd. I remember looking back down Sianamyen and seeing all these frantic people yelling and screaming....a bit like an old Godzilla movie. As I wasn't quite sure what was happening, I really become fearful.....never really had the same feeling at any other time in my life.
On Nanai, I turned against the traffic, still trying to get to the hotel. After about 15 more minutes, I came down the back way to the hotel. When I got here, I could see that people, guests and staff, were in shock.
I wanted to find out just what happened, so I went across the street and talked to Aussie Mark, who was running Riley's, at the time (now he has Beach Bar on Nanai). We decided to take a walk down Bangla. While we were walking, we could see stragglers from the beach...some limping or bleeding etc. Just past Tiger we saw an overturned jestski that was still on its trailer. That's when it really struck me that this was devastating. Saw a few sights that I would rather forget.
Went back to the hotel, where the staff was still there and working. Very lucky as most Thais were heading for the hills.
People started lining up to eat because nowhere was open between here and the beach. Served food from about 11 that morning until we ran out of everything. That was about two the next morning. Saw many, many people throughout the day walking up San Sabai with a few things they could carry,
looking shell-shocked. Altogether, a long, long day.

I was walking down towards Kamala beach from Kamala bay garden.

Was just about to cross the road that was covered with water moments later.

I never seen so many tears in my life.

Was in Bel Aire mansion on Soi Watana, just off beach road. TG woke me up and said she felt building shake. Opened curtain to see 10 feet of water outside. Took several hours before we could leave and go inland.

I would have been there but I changed my flight from Dec 21st to Dec 30th.

The Dec 21 st flight was to have been with Phuket Air, but after doing some research and finding out how bad they were I managed to get a refund by complaining about delay on way back re- fuel stop after being SOLD a direct flight. I then booked with malaysian but could not get out till Dec 30th, unless I paid 4 figures for the flight. Was dissapointed at the time as I wanted to be in Phuket for xmas.
Also got a refund off Malaysian as they had suspended flights into Phuket.

As I got my cash back I donated £100 to the tsunami fund.

Arrived in Phuket 1 year later.

I was sat on the beach in Pattaya having been in Patong 4 days earlier.
Then my mother rang me from Adelaide, she was in a right state because the last time I had spoken to her I was on my way to Phuket.
The remains of the day was spent watching the Television coverage as the sheer magnitude of the Asian Tsunami was starting to unfold.

Oceanic earthquakes happens all the time ... rarely (read almost never) does that mean an tsunami. The real measure is the deep-water title changes which requires special equipment not present in the Indian Ocean at the time. ... Hindsight is 20/20.
