I was sleeping,in my house up in Nanai.we were waked up with a lot of screaming "water is coming",we were evacuated up in a hill, and stayed there for about 2 hours.Nobody could tell me exactly what have happened.
Not untill we went down the hill,i saw cnn in a bar, then i realized what have happened.
I was in the air on my way to Phuket....was meant to get a connecting flight in BKK but was told that my flight had been cancelled due to "water on runway" and that I should come back tomorrow......
I booked into Novotel Siam Sq and went out that night to the disco....woke up about 9.00am.....went down to the concierge and asked her to fix up flights etc.....she told me that a big wave had hit the island and there would be no flights that day ....I must have had a bit of a disbelieving look on my face so she took me over to a tv set in the lobby and it was only then that it hit me just how much devastation had been delieverd upon Patong and the south end of the beach where I was meant to be staying + Kao Lak in particular (where I was meant to be diving in 2 days)
Ended up heading down to patts then along to koh samet + Kho Chang....then over to Cambo

If not for their persistance I just may not be here today!
Now that is a leap of faith.
I, like so many other BM's, weren't even in the proximity or connected to the event. I was having Christmas dinner in Wisconsin.
Actually I had never been to Phuket prior to the event, but watching (and taking part in ***) the recovery made me visit the island a year later.
*** The company I work for donated the $7000 thought our Thai agent to rebuild a school.
Was in Bkk......was in a food hall near MBK and saw a lot of Thai's looking at a TV.......went over and saw the news on TV, but it did not appear to be a big deal.......how wrong that was to prove to be.

i actually woke up real late, abotu 2pm in patong
at my gf's room behind the firehouse
i had got into a motorbike accident and took a shower, ready to head off to Phuket Intl hospital to get my cuts cleaned
when we got outside the room, it was evident that something was going on
i ddint find out exactly until i got on the hill
my gf and I drove towards Phuket Town
ended up hanging out at Ex-Pat bar on the road to Central
those people were amazing, they went and got tons of food and offered a nice meak for free
I always wanted to visit Patong over Christmas and New Years and almost made reservations for that year to stay in Patong. Instead, I went to visit my father for a week. When the Tsunami hit I was nowhere near Thailand. I woke up the next morning and saw on the news ticker that a Tsunami had hit Thailand. Unbelievable. I guess I was just lucky I wasn't there.
I was on the way from HKT to BKK.
15 minutes after the plain did start from Phuket the waves did come.
Normaly I do stay in Phuket over christmas and new year. And normaly I´m at the beach at 10 am and sleep a little round.
But this year my wife had to go home because of a lot of work.
Thank god for that.

Was living back on Nanai at the time. Slept through most of it. Far too much turkey and wine the night before. At first I thought it was a joke. But the very serious look on the Thais faces racing on thier bikes said something was up.
We zipped up haa sip pee road and spent the morning at some shack drinking beer.
It wasn't until the helicopters started doing evacs that we realized it already happened and was serious.
Made a couple of attempts to go down the hill. But then then there were false alarms and people started racing up the hill again. Finally as the sun was about to set, we went down. A friend and I went down to beach road to see what really happened. Words can't describe it. I'm sure you all saw pictures so I won't bother posting any.
We started to watch CNN/BCC and really got the full picture. Still it wasn't for another day or two that we understood how many people were injured or died. We tried to volunteer, but by then they didn't need anyone.
The following days there were a few false alarms with people going up the hills again. Everywhere smelled like moldy sea water.
Took a TV news crew up to Khao Lack. It was like a bomb had gone off. trees leveled. Buildings riped down to the raw shell. The police boat carried so far inland. Near the temple there were lots of refrigeration trucks and coffins. A very bad smell in the air.
Strangely the enormity of it really didn't sink in for a few days. I guess what still bothers me is coming across a friend who was down on beach road the day of. He'd been volunteering all day at the underground grocery store under robinsons on the south end of beach road. They were retrieving bodies. Those people never had a chance.
For months after it wasn't the same. Had a real somber mood. No one would go near beach road, even during the day time. At night forget about it. Too many ghosts. At that time Banana was running a very poorly worded campane to get people back to the club. "Back to Life at Banana".
I remember traveling to BKK shortly after. Tell some thais that I live in phuket and they took an extra long look at you. Strange.
But it is all normal now. Aside from the warning towers and road signs you'd never know it happened.

I was in Guernsey visiting my family. Horrified watching it all on the news. I was due to fly back here early February and ended up having my own little crusade to help as many people as I could which went on for 6 months.
Got my local BBC radio and newspaper involved and got buried under toys, sweets and school equipment that filled half a room. Couldn't bring it all out with me...had to sell a lot of it to turn it into money and then bought truck loads of stuff here and took it mostly to the camps around Baan Nam Khem.
Sent reports and pics back to the BBC...you can still see them all on the net here...22 parts in total>>>
Not too happy with some of their editing plus some of the picture captions are wrong.
Took as many bargirls and girls from internet shopsas I could...they all wanted to go up to Baan Nam Khem with me and it was humbling to see them all buy stuff in the supermarket too to give to the survivors.
Terrible times. Let's hope nothing like that happens again in our lifetime.

LoS,
The first picture I have seen a number of times. May have been on this board, but I am sure on other sites as well. Was that your doing? It is one of those that speaks thousands of words.
Yes it's my pic. I had to go and hide for a few minutes after taking it. She was like that the whole time we were there...in the landofsmiles she couldn't smile any more. I hope she's having a happy life now and all the others that were in that camp.
Here's some more of my pics>>>

I didn't realise that - interesting.
I was at home watching the Boxing Day cricket. News headlines initially reported "six dead", I don't know where that figure came from. Of course, as the day went on, the scale of the disaster became apparent.
