Do you read the software installation manual
I just completed an 8 page (small font) manual for installation of some software for a new product. The manual includes a screen capture of every step along with detailed instructions.
After finishing it, I wondered how many actually would read it, so I also created a one page "I-Don’t-Want-to-Read-the-Manual" Manual. Got perhaps a little carried away trying to be funny, but I am including it with the product nonetheless. A copy of that manual is attached below (identifying information substituted). The top quarter and the bottom quarter is the more interesting part (if you don't want to read all that either). The question here is, however, "To what extend do you read the manuals that come with the (software) product you buy?"

most of the time i read the manual before i buy something... this helps sometimes to get some more detail informations about the functions and the usage (good to compare different products)

I will read the manual only if the product is too complicated to explore on my own before i screw it up.

Give the company credit for realising that people dont want to read loads on non-essential blurb and writing the essentials in an easy to follow light hearted manner -
 - wish others would follow this model!

You should change the title to
Instructions for Men. The 8 page thingy should be called: Instructions for Women and Poofs. Probably not PC enough for America.

Actually my first version mention "we don't care if you lie about peeking in the manual". While that is not too bad there is a chance that some bible belt fanatic will get a hair up his/her ass. In principal I would care, but if there is a chance I could lose one sale ... it goes. Besides the fact that you are correct that PC is more prevalent in the US, I would take that stand anywhere in the world.
