Although Italy is part of the Schengen countries I do think that you can have "local legislation" in Italy on how to get a visa.
Take a look at this website but you should also look at your own countries foreign ministrys website for the particular rules.
http://www.eurovisa.info/SchengenCountries.htm
Your Thai friend should definetly apply for the visa on the Italian embassy in Thailand (probably in Bangkok). She will have to fill out some application forms and pay a fee and then the process is on the run. Dont know how the Italian process works but this is how it worked out for me so far:
27-01-06 - went to the Danish embassy in Bangkok with my GF and applied for a tourist visa. Had printed out the forms and filled them out before arriving. The embassy tells me that they will forward the application to the Danish Immigration government agency and that they will send me a questionaire back home in Denmark. (they actually send it on 27-01-06 so that was pretty quick). My GF is told that she should call back the embassy in 3 weeks to answer some questions.
27-01-06 - The Danish Immigration government agency sends me a confirmation and questionaire to my address in Denmark.
Basically it says that they will give her the tourist visa if I can provide them with at bankguarantee for 7000 Euros that they can take if she violates her Visa. Also i need to fill in some papers on how I know her etc.. They give me 3 weeks to sort it out.
10-02-06 - Bankguarantee fixed and papers filled out and sent to Danish Immigration agency. Awaiting their confirmation on giving her the visa.
Upon recieving confirmation that she will get the Visa she will have to go to the Danish embassy in Bangkok again and show them a return airline ticket and also a travel insurrance covering 33.000 Euros and the entire Schengen area. When this is done she will get the visa in her passport and everything should be ok.
I am going to Bangkok to see her again on March 18th so I hope that they have finished all the paperwork by that time so I can go with her to the embassy and finish up the business.
One thing is certain.. If you dont actively help your GF by filling out papers and getting to know the legal framework for the Visa then it will be pretty damn though for her to get it imo. My experience was that the whole process is very bureaucratic and that the people in the embassy and the immigration departments aren't exactly too helpful. I'm also pretty sure that it helped ease along the process a bit too that both of us showed up at the Danish embassy in Bangkok and applied for the visa.

If you visit Italy embassy they can tell you everything you need to do and no, she can not do it alone. You have to invite and guarantee for her, show them you have enough money. She also need travel (medical) insurance and show flight itinery.

I believe it's 1200 baht for a passport + maybe a little bit more if they need to provide other documents.

my same problem
i have been married to a thai girl since last april so its comin up to a year now and am putting her visa paperwork this may ill tell you what i know:-
/I have a form which was given to her from embassy a visa application form tells them how we met and about her family etc: i have filled out the gaps for her and now the form is in my possesion England.
/I have been aware she needs a 60:000 baht bank balance on paper which is fine.
/I have a letter from the militayr housing people telling the embassy she will live in a house with me when she arrives as im serving in the forces.
/I have a printed bank balance of £15.000 (fithteen thousand pounds)
/I have numerous letters, cards, pics, email print offs which shows are genuine love for eachother.
Am i missing out on anything i would like to know as i have found that the embassy's are not helpful i realise that but im not wanting to go in may and find out i dont have something that i should have remembered.

From my experience you seem to have it covered. Copies of bank statements over a period of time (not just 1) might be useful
Do you have an interview date? Is she aware how important the interview is?

I think they will need three recent consecutive months pay slips from you too, even though you are in the forces. Her interview is very important, she must make a good impression and you should be there with her (even though they won't speak to you it is important that you show your face). You must go by the requirements as stated on www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk. I assume she is applying for immigration as your spouse. It is crucial she does not make any mistake in the type of visa she is applying for.
Hope all works out ok! (ps - might seem a lot of grief but if you get it right 1st time, even if you supply more docs than they ask for, it should be fine, my wife and I have been married for over 5 yrs now and she came over on an 'Intended Spouse Visa' and we got married over here. She even has her UK passport now).

Good tips, I forgot proof of income. Also, I'm not sure you are entirely correct about the interview, because when my pal did it they did speak to him, so its possible.
When I did it, I just sat in the waiting room. I have said before though that being there is important, and if there is a mistake in your paperwork you being around to answer questions could be the difference between yes and no.

Re interview - I think it is entirely up to the embassy official, they didn't speak to me, I just sat there too (but i made sure they saw me, although at nearly 6ft and 16.5 stone it might be a little difficult to miss me!) - totally agree v.important that you attend also (and dress respectfully - no shorts and t-shirt, same goes for the wife).

So your married and your still not living together ?? Once married visa's get easier ???
60k baht in a bank may help for appearances but is nit a part of the requirements..
Your 15k shows ability to financially provide but is not a massive factor unless you are on dole or serious low income..
Done multiple schengen and UK visa's.. I have found that simply being clear and up front and discussing our needs (we did not want to live or be long time in UK. just letting her visit my parents in thier homes was the perfect story.. My folks had already met her so it really was a tourist request..

Judging by my own experience i would highly recomend you wait until you can go with your wife/gf to the embassy also i would recomend you go and get a thai lawyer i payed £130 and for that they translated all her papers into english and also someone went with her to the embassy and sat in on the interview with her, i was asked in and asked 2 pointless questions, i have since had 2 friends who used the same lawyer both were succesful in their applications. The lawyer i used was the bangkok law centre on the junction of sukhumvit soi 1. To be honest its just your luck who does your interview i found that on my first 2 unsuccseful attempts i got female staff who were complete *****es, who were determined to get my wife to trip up thats why i used a lawyer 3rd time and also i got a male interviewer who was not so bad.
i did not have to produce bank statements only proof of full time occupation, proof of accomadation and documents to prove long term correspondence between us

I put that she was working at the hotel I was staying at. No probs and no-one asked any questions (they might, just make sure she is confident in what she is going to say, let's face it, anyone could have 2 jobs, the interviewer can be as fanciful as they like to try and trip her up - working at a shop is a regular type of occupation, seems fine).

excellent advice - you can contact them on www.britishembassy.gov.uk/Thailand
I faxed to them (Visa Section). Your wife needs to put her paperwork in first, then they will give her an interview date. I also phoned them to make sure.
Cover all the bases!

Don't sweat over that, shop work is normal and if it's the truth then that's the best thing to say.
I forgot to mention referances too, personal ones, I had a couple of those. We used an agency as well and would not have got through the whole thing without them.

I have found that a very important factor to success of visa applications. I have done quite a few for visits to the Netherlands, and we have always been very open and clear about our intentions and needs, had all necessary documents available at the right time, and probably most important: do not make it look like you bring a h***er to your country.

the basics you will need for a visitor visa are
1)application forms and fee with two no more than six month old passport pictures
2)sponsorship letter
3)accomodation details in your home country
4)proof of contact i.e emails ,letters ,all phone bills, international calling cards the more the better.
5)proof of time together i.e boarding passes, train tickets etc for the pair of you ,shopping bills, etc once again the more the better.
6)photocopies of every page in your passport signed by you.
7)old passports
8)as many photographs of you together over long periods of time.
9)details of health insurance i.e bupa incase she falls sick in your country(go to bupa or who web site and print of details of policy that will be brought should she be granted a visa)
10)proof of your finance to keep her
11)proof of your employment
12)any divorce/death/birth certificates (translated from Thai to English or English to Thai)
what she will need is the same as above but also her
Blue house book
Thai id card
passport
proof of reason to return to Thailand (land ,house, car ,live stock, buisness. just because she has any children does not mean a reason to return ,remember Thais will leave kids with the grandparents while they go to work)
Bank details
.remember to tell the truth ,the ECO`s hear the same lies day in day out so they know when your bullsh1tting,the rules are the same for all applicants from B.G to normal well to do girls from good families,so dont be put of.
turn up at the Embassy as early as you can in the morning as some (i know the British embassy)only deal with so many applications a day.
it is also worth finding out how much the fee is and going to a Thai bank and have a bankers cheque made out in your respected embassy name.
golden rule the more details you can give the better you chance.
best of luck.
picture attached is the start of the que at the British embassy at 05.45am so that gives you an idea of how early you have to wake up.
oh and this picture was taken less than two weeks ago.
