Getting a Thai Drivers License
Well I'm planning on getting my TGF to Denmark for a visit for 2 months or so, and if that works out later longer (as you can read in another thread).
But she has no drivers license, and the place I live Denmark, then a drivers license would be really handy! Of cause later she could get one in Denmark, but that would proberly run up in the area of 50000 bath!
My question is then, what is the price of a drivers license in LOS, I simply cannot imagine that it will cost the same amout here.
And will she be able to get an International Drivers License, that she can use in Denmark? And later maybe convert to a Danish drivers license?
Rgds,
SMF

Just tell her to get onto a driving school and do some lessons, getting the license is pretty straight forward.

Oh yes, actually it takes 5 hours to cross, and if you want to go from ex. Copenhagen to Skagen (north tip of Jutland) then it takes 8 hours!
But of cause a bike is a good thing in Denmark, but I don't really want to offer her to drive 28 KM's to the nearest Thai Temple (alhough I really hope she will join me in my own Tibetian Buddhist Center instead). I think that's a little too far for someone not used to use a bike!

Hi Steve,
Well I didn't think it was any big issue. I was basically just asking for a approx. price and if a Thai license can be used (with or without an International Drivers License) in other countries!
But do you by any way know the Thai word for a driving school?

Gets the thai licence from the transport office.. Then an internetaional comes from somewhere in BKK (its on ThaiVisa)..
Though I remember something about not getting an international until you have spent some time after passing your test..
A Thai licence cannot be converted into a Euro (well it couldnt in Holland germany Belgium) by not taking a test. If you have seen Thai drivers or the Thai road tyest I am grateful.

Ead did that when I bought the car and it was not big money, maybe a few tousand baht. (She already drived car in her village so she had experience but I demanded she got a proper driver license)
However, I think its possible for her to get an international drivers license based on her Thailand license that she can use in Denmark, but the quality of theory is a lot higher in Europe. Ead just got 7 page theory, in Sweden its a book.

SMF,
My GF took a driving course, up in the north country. (Buriram)
As I recall, the course itself, cost around 5000thb. I think around 12 days of classroom (half day)...to take written test. Car provided for instruction, and inclusive in cost.
Everything is cheaper in Isaan though. Don't know about the cost in Phuket, or Bangkok.
(She busted the driving test twice, and got some extra practice, driving my rental car. Then passed the test, on third try.)

Yes you can get a IDP (note international driving PERMIT not IDL.. Big difference) based on a Thai licence and use it to drive in Europe (insurances permitting)..
But we can convert an IDP based on our home countrys licence into a Thai licence.. I dont think a Thai can do this in Europe.
Also you cant drive on an IDP in your 'home' country.. So passing a test in Thailand (easy.. Do it blindfold) and then using that to get a Thai IDP and drive back home is a no go.. How that kind of rule applies god knows, home country for me is a pretty confusing concept.. Wasnt born in England and a non resident now, have dual nationality also.. Have no idea how they would define that.

Wifey took the test here.. I think it was about 8k for 12x 2 hour lessons (may have been 10 may have been 14) over a 2 week period.. Plus use of car for test etc.. She failed the first one (man she was hell to be with that day) and passed the second I think by wearing a shorter skirt.
Instructor has an office on the side Rd opposite the Patong Temple.
She got the licence but couldnt drive for shit.. Not a hope of a hill start etc.. Whole thing a bit of a joke.. Watching them take the test is funny.. Drive around a layout of road for 1 min.. Park once.. Reverse in a straight line.. Kop Khun Krap !!

and the fact that a large % still fail that !!!
Spinner get her bike licence sorted recently and watching these thai women in thier husbands pick ups just reversing over cones, not a hope of parellel parking.. While the guys stood there willing them to turn the other way or to do it different just explains the carnage.

If you as a falang get an international driving license based on your swedish driving license that is good enough for driving cars in Thailand. However, it is my experience that the police really arent interested in seeing your license, but more interested in your bath.
I got stopped two weeks ago just outside Khorat and was clueless as to why. The police officer came up and asked for my license and I just gave him my normal danish one (didnt have the international one hehe). Then he said a lot of things in Thai and went to his police car. My wife was fuming and told me that he had basically said "How can we fix the the easiest way. It would be so bad for you to have to go to the policestation and sit there for 4-5 hours". I asked her what the problem was and she told me he just wanted money - when he came back with my license I slipped him 100 bath and everything was fine then.. hehe crazy..
@ SMF - I am 99.967% sure that a Thai drivers license cannot be exchanged to a Danish drivers license. This is mainly due to the quality of the Thai drivingtests/license requirements, but also due to the many falsified/counterfeit documents.
If I were you I would call up the CMR/Police and ask them about this because chances are that she would have to pass the Danish tests to "convert" her card and there is no chance in hell that a Thai (or any other foreign national) is going to pass the Danish tests (especially the theory) without going to driving school here. You would probably just end up with paying for 2 licenses - 1 in Thailand and 1 in Denmark.

Hej Michael,
Well based on all the input from this thread I think you're right. I better wait until she's here (permanent) and then get her a "real" drivers license. Then she'll learn everything from the bottom, and maybe we are even as lucky as being able to find a driving instruction who is Thai! Although I think it will be a huge challange just to pass the theory test! A good thing that many of the driving schools have like fixed prices for the whole thing!
Rgds,
SMF

Good thinking, Erik!
Get her a visa first, and then you can fix her a license for car, ship, helicopter, airplane, diving, etc.............., but first the visa.

Coincidence!!
Only this morning my gf. called me and told me she has passed her Thai test on her second attempt and got her licence. She paid 520 bht for the test and licence that is valid for 5 years.
She also told me that the other option to obtain a licence if she failed her test was to pay the licencing officer 10,000 bht
