Buddha shrine
What's the correct name for the little Buddha shrines you see on the streets, in restaurants etc. ?
If all is going okay, I get a sweet visitor over here in a couple of weeks and I want to surprise her.
I'm searching the Net since hours but can't seem to find a decent site where to order it ? Or even better, if someone from the UK knows a place where to get it, that would be great.

It is not a Buddha shrine. The small houses are for the spirits.
Good luck finding one

...but if he'd entered "I don't know they are called spirit houses" he would have found the thread...
Google on Thai spirit house and you'll get plenty of hits selling same. e.g.
http://www.handicraftdecor.com/cat112021623401.htm
So, what ya want one for? Can't you afford to give her her own room?
Must be one short-a*se TG...

Thanks for the link, Tyfon...yes, the spirit's were not with me to lead to the magic search engine keywords.
See, I offered her a seperate room, but she simply doesn't accept it

You are speaking about two different things. The hoses outside the street are the ghosthouses. As the name already says its for the ghosts (souls ) so they have a home for themself and dont stay in your home. Normally budism has nothing to do with ghosts, but in the thaiculture there ise also kind of believing in spirits and ghosts . What you see in the restaurants or at home are little shrines to celebrate. Also often you will see in restaurants cats or woman , waving their arms, which means to make customers come in (welcome)

Thanks, Shark. Since I don't have a deep knowledge about all this, the best would be to let her decide what best suites her. Maybe it's better to go together on a tour through England and visit various shops, rather me planning things ahead alone ?

hi ub2yoo,
It never hurts to plan! But have you checked out where to find Thai Temples where you live? I found out that only 28 km from where I live here in little Denmark there is one. And that there are actually several in the Copenhagen area in total. When my GF comes here (when she finally will have her visa), that's one of the places I'm planning to take her.
rgds,
SMF

Actually yes. As a buddhist you beleive in ghosts, as that's one of the realms you can be reborn into.
In Buddism, there is the teaching of the six worlds, or the six realms of existence. The six realms are:
The world of heaven. This is the world of enjoyment, pleasure or pleasant things. The condition of heaven is impermanent, and this state of mind will also change.
The world of humans. (Human beings) In the world of humans, sometimes we are happy, sometimes we are sad, sometimes we are laughing, sometimes we are crying.
The world of asuras. This is the world of fighting, or strife. The realm or state of mind of fighting.
The world of ghosts and hungry spirits. This is the realm of dissatisfaction, not being content. The state of having endless unsatisfied desires, or greed. Figuratively speaking, always being hungry.
The world of animals. It is the realm lacking reason. The state without reason. Without reason, mistakes are made, causing hardships or suffering to self, and at times others. Without reason, being dominated by one's desires.
The world of hell. Hell refers to the realm of suffering. The state of suffering and pain, which through cause and condition people will enter.
